Another Power Steering Problem

dimanche 15 mars 2015

Well, let me start by introducing myself and give a little bit of a back story on the problem because I have been trying to fix this for a very long time. So let's rewind to March 2013. I was 20 years old and my dad was taking me to the used car lot to pick out a car. And guess what cool car, parked right up in front was. Yep it was a red 2005 Mazda RX8. Now looking back, I realize I was an idiot. I knew nothing of the car, didn't even understand the fact that its rotary (I know a lot more about this car now that I found rx8club btw).

All is good with the car. There were seemingly no problems, ran perfectly fine, but then again I had no clue what was done to this car or if the compression is good (still not completely sure to be honest, but it runs smooth). After a couple months of owning the car, I get the typical pulling to the left, and intermittent power steering failure. That was when I discovered Rx8club and wish I would have done research on the car before I bought it.

So I found the post about cleaning the connectors and rerouting the coolant overflow hose, did that and Viola! It worked. But to no avail not for long. When I would disconnect the connectors, clean them and reconnect it would work. I started to get annoyed with constantly having to clean them, so I got curious and tried to figure out which one was the problem. Cleaned the connectors, got power steering, while the car was running, I disconnected the connector with two 10ga wires coming from it, and I lost power, but the light didn't come on. Then I disconnected the connector with the 3 14ga wires coming off, and I haven't been able to get the power steering working since.

Since then, I have tried replacing the lower harness (the one that goes to the rack), cutting and soldering the wires together, and even putting in new, higher grade connectors. Still nothing has worked. A couple months ago, I came across a Chinese clone for a VCM to my 8, figuring if I could get it to work, I can follow the service manual and diagnose the problem. Unfortunately, it is a pain to get to work (since its obviously a cheap knock off) and I haven't had the time to play with it more.

I am looking for some guidance from you all. Unfortunately I don't have the money to take it to the stealership and have them fix it. I know there are three components to the power steering that can go wrong (well I think): faulty harness, torque sensor on rack, and the PCM. Thinking back, it is possible that I mismatched the wires when soldering them (not completely sure, just spitballing). Or maybe while messing with the connectors while the car was running could have fried the sensor or PCM (I honestly don't even know if that can happen). I found online a site that will ship me a rack or PCM off an rx8 that was junked for other reasons (with a guarantee on it) for a couple hundred bucks.

Sorry for the long winded post, I have been putting this off for too long. I have grown to love the car, and I just want power steering back! Thanks for your help guys.
