Rotary burning no Oil?

Hey guys! Starting to get concerned about my 8, and i want to get some feedback before i start spending money on replacing things. It's been about 2 thousand miles now, and ive burned [B] very little to no oil.[B] Im fairly certain from what research i have done, that if the OMP has failed that its supposed to pop a CEL? Also oil consumption seems to have been slowly dropping over about 5k or so miles, but i cant be certain, due to having to replace my battery and do some other work, causing my trip odometer to reset several times.

So i don't think that is the issue, im thinking clogged lines, but from what ive seen, that requires taking then engine out in order to replace? Any other options or ideas? Ive also been premixing fairly heavily, so Im not too concerned about engine health as of right now, but i do know thats temporary.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated!+

I am confused?? Why my car shoots flames ... is this good or bad?

The modifications to my car that i have internally are agency power exaust ,ngk spark

plugs, engine rebuild,opl aluminum radiator and bhr coils. Currently my engine as a check engine

light and coolant light that turns off and on. My car shoots flames and i don't know why...

unless this is normal. (Ask my mechanic and he says its okay). wanted to know if you

anyone would agree.

ECU/Ignition Replace

Replacing the ecu with matching locks including ignition lock and key.

While researching, I found some conflicting opinions as to whether will also need 'ECU rebuilt with "as built" data from Mazda.' .

Will I need anything other than matching ecu/locks/key in order to make the swap without having to reprogram the keys?

Hey Guys,

Plans are in upcoming months to rebuild my 6 port. This will be my first rotary rebuild. Does anyone know of a good rotary rebuild video that I can buy? I know atkins sells a rebuild video, anyone ever seen it? Any good?? I have watched some on YouTube.

I just want to know what I am getting myself into before I do this. I know it doesn't mean much but I have rebuilt several piston engines in the past without issues. As long as I have the proper steps, clearance tools and specs Ill be fine.

so i'm looking to get an Rx8 been wanting one for a while but could never justify the purchase due to money but been saving up and finally about to make the jump was hoping to get some input on things i need to look for when buying an Rx8 new to the rotary engine so i don't know what common problem are or what to avoid on them and help would be greatly appreciated. Buying a Swapped RX8 (Problems)

So I found a guy selling a 2004 RX8 with a 5.3 vortec engine swapped into from a Chevy 1500 and it also has a rebuilt transmission. When I went to take a look at it and it didn't really have that good of acceleration, cause it's supposed to have about 320 horsepower. What could the problem be? If it's easily fixable, what else should I look for?

DIY Aux in - Over MD/Tape

Hey guys Sorry if this is a repost or if it has been covered before but i couldnt find anything on that subject! Usually when someone asks they get the answer to buy a Ipod Aux kind of module for 60usd or something like that. I stumbled on the diy of another member who solders some wires into the headunit and uses a silenced cd to play music through his aux in which is a neat idea! But i dont like using a silenced cd... So i figured if you can use the Audio in/outputs or whatever from the cd ... maybe you could use the MD/Tape in/outputs aswell!?

So after some more research i found a thread on another forum! This is about the Bose System on the Mazda 6 but i suppose these headunits are quite similiar or atleast have the same input for a MD/Tape module!?

Would that work on our Bose unit aswell? Is it the same connector!? I think that would be the best and cheapest solution since it is kind of plug and play with things most of us have lying around and doesnt require opening up and soldering around in curcuit boards of the headunit which i think a lot of us are afraid of!?

DIY Aux in - Over MD/Tape

Rebuild warranty issue

I'm having trouble with my engine rebuild after 11 months and the rebuilder is pushing back on my warranty claim. I'm not going to post who it is (yet) because I don't want to burn bridges just (yet).

We are both seeing similar numbers on our compression testers (both using RCT-V5).
99/96/94 @298 RPM on the front rotor (he sent me a photo of their RCT-V5)
Rear rotor when I tested was just barely above spec and rebuilder reports the same.

The rebuilder has the engine and they can't replicate my intermittent hot-start issue but their numbers match mine. They are claiming that there has to be a hot start/idle issue or compression has to be below 90 psi (or 10 psi diff between faces) for a warranty claim (this is nowhere on their website).

The rebuilder claims that the below-spec numbers are due to the fact that they used Atkins seals which don't break in the same and they reused my irons. This sounds like BS to me. If they don't break in then that's a problem. Also, if the reused hardware was out of spec, why didn't they include that in the orignal rebuild?

Am I being taken for a ride here?

Quick fuel pressure question

When I leave the car out, should the pressure drop? When I leave my 8 overnight the fuel pressure is reading 0 to 15. But when I put the key to the on position it goes back to about 54 and when I start it up it goes onto steady 60. Is that normal?

Hi all, I had a bad / loose connection on my battery terminal and the intermittent power caused my EPS module to go bad. ( I have verified this as the problem through ohm testing of the wireharness etc etc ) anyway, I'm going to replace the module , but what are the chances the noise filter also needs to be replaced?

2004 rx8 will not turn over

I just bought a 2004 rx8 from a guy and when I turn the key the dash lights work but nothing else. Radio, seat adjustment, windows, etc. I've done a little research and it sounds to me that things can get pretty complicated in the order you do things with this car and how you do them. So I figure asking the professionals would be my best bet before I do anything at all. However I am on my way to purchase a chiltons manual to try to understand this car better. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P2070 (Solved)

Thought this might be helpful for some of the newer owners.

I did all these to the SSV

Cleaned the valve to shiny new
the valve moved freely by hand prior to and after cleaning
Watched it cycle itself correctly
Tested actuator with pump successfully
tested solenoids successfully
Swapped solenoids twice to see if code changed - it did not
changed all vacuum lines

And still ssv stuck open code.

last thing to do was test the impact switch, and sure enough it was DEAD. and I mean 0 ohms dead. I tested the impact switch plug with an ohm-meter. I somehow managed to grab the ssv plug by hand, unplug it, and test it without taking anything out of the way. I was also able to press in the impact switch when testing. A few scratches on the hand no big deal. The impact switch should produce 2 to 3 ohms when pressed in and 0 when not. So I tested mine and it read 0 ohms when pressed in. There it is, impact switch failure tripping my p2070 code because the computer thinks it's stuck open when it's not.

Hi everyone, Ive read through a few posts...some where helpful. Based upon a few suggestions, Ive replaced the (4) coils, (4) wires, (4)plugs with all new parts...pretty easy work really.

Experiencing Same Problem EVEN AFTER said new parts installed:

The 8 starts fine: Not a quick start/not hard start either. Call it a mild start (2-3 second start-up). Some coughing-sputtering out exhaust past couple weeks experience weather temp changes in WI.

No Engine Check Lights before start. No Engine Check Light when driving. The other day, the temp dropped from 50-70F to 28F... in a few hours, no big deal the car does just fine for WI winters...It sat outside for about 3 hours in 28F (its used to being garaged 50F). But it started right up, it warmed up, and then I casually drove it home.

Drove home 19-24 miles on country roads, a few stop-and-go lights 35-50mph max with No Engine Check Lights present. I could come to a good stop, yet once ready to gradually accelerate, the rpms revved up normally, but the revs needed to stay higher- longer for it to physically increase its speed. As if it had some power/acceleration lag.

Curious, because its 6-speed manual, I question the clutch slipping/not fully release/engage motor to convert power?
- something not fully engaging the rotary power?
- Is there a Clutch Adjustment perhaps I should check?
- what else would cause this when Ive replaced coils, wires, and plugs?

Please HELP.
I was thinking possibly the trans fluid is low(?) - low compression?

Honestly, I have not had anything major/mechanical/ELE go wrong with this 2007 RX8, and have driven it from about 52K miles to 84k without any issues (2.5-3 years).

What else could it be that's causing this lag/lack of acceleration when there's no Engine Check Light present?

Destroyed Spark Plugs... WTF!

So I was getting random intermittent pops and backfires, and even though my plugs had just been replaced when I installed a full BHR ignition kit about 10k miles ago (barely a year now), they are often the first culprit and easy/cheap to replace. Upon replacing the plugs, which should have been fine, I found them rather heavily fouled. Additionally, upon removing the rear Leading plug, the tip came loose and the whole central core came out, looking like it had been burned, corroded, and half-melted, as per the attached pic... Obviously the car is running much smoother now with brand new plugs, but what could have caused this kind of severe damage in barely 10k miles? Anyone seen this before?

I bought my 04 rx8 in September at around 96k miles and since then I've put about 1500 miles on it and it ran well with the only problem being the awful warm starts so many people seem to suffer from. I didn't think anything of it. I assumed it was my ignition coils so I changed those(didn't help) and had plans on replacing the spark plugs shortly after. But I turned my car on after 2 days of no driving and my cel started blinking and then my rpm dropped all the way to 0 and it hasn't started since. My mechanic said there was no compression whatsoever and I'll need a rebuild or a new engine. Does anyone know where to get this done for a decent price. I'm trying not to dump more than 3-4k on this.

power loss at cruise speeds

Have been working with a shop here who keep having medium mileage rx8s coming in with this same issue . He has been fixing it by premixing at 100:1 but came to me to look at a better solution. I noticed that one cell in particular looks very low (3000rpm at 38% load).
But even those around it which correspond to cruise loads/rpm seem too low - note the highlighted cells:



Am working on a map that addresses this without increasing oil consumption drastically . Will post it up once we have a confirmed cure to the issue.

Air Filter

Is an aftermarket air filter worth it? I am thinking of putting a K&N air filter in the the airbox; nothing fancy like a cold air intake, just replacing the factory filter.

NOT hitting redline every day

My friend just rolled over 150k miles on his 05 rx8 6spd. Got a compression test to celebrate. Passed with ease. He has never redlined the car according to him. No premix or anything. Drives it "hard" occasionally to a maximum of 7k. I've never really believed the whole redline once a day to keep her happy thing so I didn't do it. Mine lasted to nearly 150k b4 she overheated in traffic and blew a coolant seal. Got her compression tested for giggles and passed beautifully. Lots of 8s in junkyards here I've found with over 200k. Even in automatic form! The 8s really do get a bad rep. Just some food for thought tho. I do know the theory behind the 9k carbon cleaning tho. Have done due diligence

This list should include all the acronyms and the words (names) that correspond.
if this list exists, forgive me, I just have not found it yet, so I will then suggest that it be placed in a more open space where it is recognizable as to what it is.

there are also many things that people talk about such as fixing the NVRAM and resting this or that and some things are simple but a page and sticky on that, again in an easily understood place would be helpful.

Pedal Cover Fell Off

Not sure how this happened but the clutch pedal cover came off on a leisurely daily drive back from work. It was a PITA to put back on and the only successful way was to:
1. be patient - consume an entire beverage unit of your choice before you start
2. get the top of the pedal cover rubber around the top of the pedal
3. use the smallest flat screwdriver you have (that is not sharp) and slowly work both sides down whilst holding the pedal cover at the top (from sliding up)
4. slowly work the one bottom side around to meet the other bottom side
5. enjoy your success with another beverage and a cigar (see the lounge for more ideas)

If you ask me this pedal cover design reminds me of Ford's design (slip off often as a design specification) that is currently plaguing the Ford ST.

Bought Used RX8, Need advice

Howdy guys, I recently bought an RX8 at 98000 miles from a used car dealer. I know, that's terrible, but I got a steal. I am finding out why I got a steal though, and I'm wondering if they're sold it to me under false pretenses or are doing something shady and illegal. So it starts out with me buying it and needing it immediately, before it had taken emissions. They told me to take emissions and bring back the paperwork as soon as possible. I did so, and it failed emissions due to multiple misfires and a catalytic converter being inefficient. So I demanded that they pass the emissions and they complied because legally they have to. So I come back 2 days later and they said they replaced the Cat. Converter and it had passed emissions. I got the paperwork and confirmed, they did pass emissions. 3 minutes into driving it off the lot, the check engine light comes on. As you should all know, a car cannot pass emissions with the check engine light on. The codes were for misfires still, so I replaced the spark plugs myself to prevent having to back to those terrible people. After doing so, I expected the CEL to go away. It did not, and it read another misfire in "cylinder 2". While that would be simple in a normal car, there are no dang cylinders in these cars so it's reasonably impossible to tell exactly which ignition coil it was. At this point, I am calling the Used Dealership back but I don't want them to touch the car again, as they have no idea what they're doing with a rotary. I'm no genius, but it seems like they did something shady to get the CEL off and get the misfires to not register. Can anyone give me some advice on what to do and how to go about getting the repairs done by a Mazda Dealership and paid for by the used car place? Thank you

Oil feed cleaning/MOP

Hey guys, first post so take it easy.

I have an 54 RX8 (the second that I've owned) and notice it's not as thirsty on oil as my last one. I've done a bit of reading and recon it's probably worth cleaning out the oil feed to the engine, but I am struggling to locate/get access to the pipes.

Is there a how to guide you could direct me to or can anyone give some advice on how I might do this.

Lightly used Racingbeat non-resonated midpipe. Used it for a few months while I replaced my catalytic converter. Sounded great with the OEM mufflers. A little too loud, for my taste, with the aftermarket exhaust I had on the car. So once I got the new cat, the pipe came off and my aftermarket catback went back on. Will post photos soon.

Series 2 RX8 battery question on ignition system

Ok the 5 year old OEM Mazda battery that came with my 2010 GT RX8 finally croaked its last crank yesterday morning and wouldnt even turn on the Starter Motor when was going out for lunch but all electrical works fine LOL...

I live in California so I went ahead and got a Optima Yellow Top and installed it while I was at work...And my RX8 is alive again.

But I noticed something strange in a good way.

1. RX8 starts instantly with one click
2. Idle is more smoother

I was under the impression that RX-8's like my previous RX-7 switches everything over to the Alternator once everything is running...which should in turn wont affect anything the way my car runs with the old battery compared with the new one.

Am I wrong?

Actual oil pressure gauge?

Hi,

Among the many projects I'm feverishly trying to finish before the start of the season is a set of gauges I've installed on the dash. One is an oil pressure gauge. I'm curious what the pressure will actually look like when the car is running.

I ask, because I also decided to install an FD oil pressure regulator, which increases the oil pressure to 110psi. The gauge, haha, only reads to 100psi. Is it just going to be pegged at all times, or will it rise with engine speed?
