Oil cooler housecleaning

samedi 22 août 2015

While washing my '11 RX-8 (Velocity Red Mica, Sport), I noticed that the black shroud surrounding the passenger-side oil cooler seemed to be loose. On closer inspection it was cracked from the front edge to the back. No idea how that happened. I did kill a cone during an autocross that dislodged a bunch of plastic rivets holding part of the under tray in place and maybe the impact was hard enough to crack the shroud.

I had to remove the bumper cover to get to it and ended up using JB Weld to mend it and seems almost good as new. While I was in there, I decided to straighten the fins on both coolers - one-by-one - hundreds of them and pulled out the little smashed bugs and tiny pebbles. The attached pic shows my progress at about the halfway point on the first cooler.

Between changing diapers on the new baby (car seat and stroller fit fine!), that little project took a while, but going out to the garage actually provided some nice quality time with the car. I decided to suck it up and ordered the oil cooler screens which will be here on Wednesday from Racing Beat.

Might as well change the coolant too. Next stop - Series II DIY to look that up.
