Limp mode or compression loss?

Was driving the 8 today it was a pretty hot day and i started up from a stopsign reved to about 7k and then it sputter a bit seemed like fuel cut then it died started it up tried it again same thing happened was able to drive home below 7k but it had two or three random cuts around 3- 4 k and one at idle for a long time the car was running for like 3 hours today so does limp mode do that and is compression loss let you drive sometimes or can you not move at all or run the car kinda freaking out my mechanic says it may be because of the cat
