New Potential RX-8 Owner

mercredi 30 septembre 2015

Hey all! New here and wanted to get some opinions on the RX-8. Never owned a RWD and wondering how the RX-8 copes in winters here in Boise, ID. It seems to have pretty good balance and weight distribution, so good in general? A problem only on the slopes/mountains I suppose?

If you have other general thoughts about the vehicle and it's practicality, maintenance or potential re-sale value, please go write. :-)

Many thanks!

2006 RX8 6 speed with 106k miles a smart buy

Hello everyone. I've been drooling over this 2006 RX8 6 speed manual in pristine condition. The only thing is it has 106k miles. It is priced very reasonable. All service records and car fax is provided. Would this be a smart buy? I've done tons and tons of research but I'm interested in hearing from actual experience. I see so many contradicting statements as to the rotary engine reliability after 100k miles. Thank you all for the input.

{ FS } (4) 17" Black Kazera Rims / Winter Tires - VIRGINIA

$500.00 for (4) 17" Black Kazera Rims / Winter Tires - VIRGINIA - FOR PICKUP ONLY

I sold my car with default rims and now selling the wheels I used for winter tires in place of the original 18" wheels.

These are good-looking black rims I purchased for $636.00 originally plus (4) winter tires, (2) being worn and need replacement soon, the other (2) with some life left.

The rims are in good condition, only some minor scratches. I can take more pics if needed. I included a pic of how they used to look on the original car.

Thanks

{WTB/WTT} WTB Right Undertray Riser and Guard

Hello, all. I'm looking to replace the riser that connects to the side of the undertray, and rises up to the side of the wheelwell. I replaced the undertray itself with the aluminum one from RX8performance earlier this year, but I hit a particularly angry cone (autocross) and it took out the passenger side riser.

I can't find the riser for sale by itself; mazmart has the tray with both risers. I'm hoping to avoid that expense. I can't find a part number either.

I'll add a picture showing what I'm talking about when I get back to my main computer.

Also, I'm looking for a driver's sunvisor and either the button for the center console, or the console sliding door with the button intact.

This post is a work in progress, sorry about that.

I'm in the Rochester, NY area, and I travel on the weekends for autocross. If you're far, I'll pay for shipping. Let me know about price, pics, and shipping cost.

Thanks!

Anyone here tried the Rota RT5-R2 17x10 +50 wheel for autocross/HPDE?

Anyone tried to Rota RT-5 wheel in 17x10 +50? I'd be fitting 255/40/17 autocross-grade tires on an autocross / track day car. I'd be aiming for a 13.5" ride height. This setup would be 1" wider on both sides of the hub centerline.

Trying to figure out if this would require any rolling at a reasonable ride height.

They seem popular with the S2000 guys due to decent brake clearance, favorable offset, and reasonable weight and price (21 pounds-ish?, and $800 for the set).

I know then I need a special compression tester but I used a convencional tester and the engine has 90 psi in each rotor.

The engine comes with ECM so Do i need Change the ECM?

Another Vertex Shinka

After being on this forum for several years now, not too many body kits really appealed to me... Getting a full kit wasn't my intention when I first got the car. I loved the body lines of the RX-8 already as it is, but overtime I started getting bored of it.

The first kit I considered a couple of years back was a Burnout Type II/Shine Auto Project Type II kit. I loved how it looked, it definitely made the car a lot less curvy/feminine IMO without going too overboard in styling. I told myself that I was settled on the look afterwards and kept it for a couple of years that way, boy was I wrong. Deep down, I felt like something was missing... I wasn't satisfied with the car aesthetically.

Two RX-8s in particular made me want to re-consider changing the entire appearance of the car. One, being konigs with his whitewater pearl RX-8. My first SevenStock was when I first saw his car, and I instantly fell in love with the look. After doing some research on the Vertex kit, I came across Sifu's thread which confirmed my decision on what kit I really wanted.

At one point, I considered piecing together the full R-Magic kit instead, primarily because I did not want to be another "Vertex RX-8" in Cali... I scrapped that idea realizing that it just didn't meet my taste and I was doing it out of impulse more than actually liking the kit. I let go of the feeling of "copying" someone and decided from that point on to just do whatever the **** I want. :wiggle:

And here she is fresh out of the body shop...

I'm very satisfied and happy with the car now. It still needs some work and several minor changes I plan to do on certain parts of the car, which will again take some time. For now I'll enjoy this while it lasts.

I would like to do a huge shoutout to Rmanis Works (818-263-7725) in North Hollywood, CA for taking care of my car and going over every detail to make sure I'm satisfied with their work. It took me a month and a half to get my car back due to delay in parts arriving, but it was worth the wait. Caulin, from Bulletproof Automotive for his excellent customer service. As always, a big thanks to my friends at Rotary Lounge for their help and support for the last three years and counting as well as some of my other RX-8 friends, you know who you are.

P.S. I took these photos at my work, Lol.

Looking to join the club

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to join the club! But first will need to know a couple of things.

I currently have a Honda Civic 1.8l i'm looking to upgrade to an RX8. i'm looking at a 2008 model and have been a big fan of the car since I was a teen.

Before i make the jump there are a couple of things I need to consider however:

- Fuel Consumption - how does this compare to the Civic 1.8? I'm a mostly conservative driver (unless i'm in the mood to play) and usually refuel once every 6 to 7 days with the Civic. I'm obviously prepared to pay more, the question is how much more.

- Maintenance. Given that the RX8 i'm looking at is pretty aged. What are the estimated maintenance costs like and before purchasing the car what are the problem areas I should look out for beside the usual (oil leakage, belt timing, electronics..etc).

End of the day what I'm really interested in knowing is what the increase in upkeep an RX8 will be compared to a Civic 1.8l

Thanks for the advice in advanced, this will be a big help to me.

Limp mode help

2004 rx8 keeps going into limp mode. We have put new spark plugs and spark plug wires. New MAF sensor a new front 02 sensor and all new ignition coils. Not sure what to do next. Will the rear 02 sensor cause it to go into limp mode? :ugh2:

Clunking sound when turning?

For about a month now I've been noticing a popping clunking sound* when I turn to the right at slow speeds. Today I finally was able to get the car up and remove the wheel and I noticed the tie rod end balljoint failing. Could this be the issue? Any help would be appreciated. Luckily I don't drive it much since I ride my ninja most of the time.

Will not start or turn over...dead

My car will not do anything. It used to start after trying several times. Thought it was the fuel pump or clogged filter and was not.

Later found out that, it was the pressure switch combined with the throttle body but, would start and run decent after warming up by feathering the throttle and keeping it running by pushing on the throttle slightly til warm.

The switch would not open the throttle til you pressed the accelerator about 1/3 of the way down and the butterfly would move after that point. No movement til then.

The last time I tried to start it, the battery was low so, I swapped the battery after trying to jump it off. When I put a newer battery in, the car went into "someone is stealing me" mode and will do nothing. I put the key in the ignition and nothing on starting.

The gauges swoop the whole way and then back but, no start or turn over or nothing.

What can be done to tell the computer that I have the correct key as, I cannot lock the car or open the trunk remotely. The key lights up as, I have the switchblade key. The extra key would not do anything, either. Is there a procedure to relearn the keys and get it out of this mode and back to where I can try to start it? I am trying something by taking all the fuses out with the cpu and disconnecting the battery for a day and keep the fuses out.

Is there a proven way to 'reset' the whole system or, am I going to have to have it towed to a dealer? I want to get it back running as, everything works and the car is in decent shape with good heat and air and is usually dependable til all this junk started happening.

Rough Idle - Stalling after long drive

lundi 28 septembre 2015

First of all, I'm no expert. Most of what I know I've learned from searching these forums the last month trying to solve my problem.

I have a 2006 RX-8 manual transmission with just over 90k miles, no CEL or codes, oil changed last week and MAF sensor and throttle body have been cleaned. I changed the coils and spark plugs a couple weeks ago as the first attempt to fix the problem. It had been about 30k miles so they definitely needed to be changed, and the car did drive much better, but I'm still having issues.

I am typically seeing the issues after driving the car for about a half hour. My drive to work takes about 40 minutes, it is 38 miles and 36 of that is interstate. The car drives great getting on the interstate and while on the interstate, but as soon as I exit and slow down/idle the car runs rough. The idle is inconsistent and I completely lose power at low RPM's. At its worst the car will actually die at idle. The problem is worst when accessories are on, especially a/c. I have also noticed some flickering of the clock display and dimming of the headlights during the RPM fluctuation at idle. The fans also seem to turn on in sync with the idle revs.

I got on OBD-II scanner and all I've really noticed as being potentially strange so far is the battery voltage. The voltage is consistent around 13.5 during interstate driving but fluctuates from 11 to 14 at idle (see images). I replaced the battery early this year but broke one of the connectors in the process, I replaced both connectors but it's possible that in the process of tightening them I loosened another connection somewhere. I also wonder if the alternator might be going bad and not able to charge the battery enough during idle after a long drive.

I had the car to the dealership last week but they couldn't recreate the issue and said it "wasn't too bad". They said they could do a compression test as the next step, but obviously that is expensive and I don't even know if that will identify the problem.

I guess I'm wanting to know if there's anything else I should be looking for or anything else I can do to diagnose the problem. If I take the car in what should I have them look for? Any good mechanics in the Denver/North Colorado area?

Pics are a screenshot of OBD-II app showing battery voltage readings, the first on the interstate, the second after the drive at idle.

Hot start issue after seafoam

So the other day my car flooded pretty bad so I wanted to do some maintenance on it to prevent future issues, now it hardly starts when its warm. The starter sounds like it's spinning fast it just isn't turning over for a while. Any ideas what it could be? I didn't have this issue before, I'm hoping the seafoam treatment didn't damage a seal. To get it started initially I did crank it for a while and could have possibly damaged the starter I suppose. The battery is only a few months old

So here is what I did,

Gutted the cat
Replaced the 0² sensor and added a spacer
Seafoamed the engine letting the seafoam soak over night
Replaced the plugs and wires

Total loss

So my beloved RX8 was rearended by some douchbag kid....

Anyway I'm looking at 2 prospective cars an 05 audi tt with upgraded turbo and some other stuff 300whp really clean like super clean.. 136k miles for 8 grand

What you guys think now the rx8 r2 is worth with the r title?

2004 RX-8, where does this solenoid go?

I've searched but can't find an answer and alldata is no help. I've got a metal vacuum solenoid under the airbox that is plugged in to the electrical harness near the MAF sensor but both ports are connected to short lengths of vacuum hose and nothing else. Where should this go? It looks like an EGR solenoid but I can't find any info on it. It's not one of the main 3 solenoids under the UIM. Forgive me if it's a simple question, I'm a BMW guy and just trying to help a friend. I'll link to a picture since I can't get photo upload to work. Thank you.

Question about oil control rings

I have a 2005 RX8. In February I had the engine replaced. New housings, CAT, Apex Seals, starter and so on.

Here it is 8 mounts later, I have but almost 7000 miles on the new engine and now I have a blown oil control ring. It blows smoke like crazy, and now only runs on one rotor due to oil in the combustion chamber. So it sits parked now.

My question is what would cause a oil control ring to go bad in so fast in a new engine? From what I have been told, the oil control rings are the original ones from my old engine. Just trying to sort this out and figure out if I want to put more money into the car or finally just let it go.

Thanks,

Paul

I ended up 17th out of 58 cars at Solo Nationals this year. I’m a big guy and definitely not the best driver. I’m sure a good driver could put this car in the top spots.

Transmission grinding issue

So i recently bought a rx8 2004 with 61k miles on it. owner said first gear was gone, second gear grind-ed when warm, and reverse needed a synchro, but others "worked". So i got it home (had it hauled). The reason i bought it was it looked good, perfect inside out, engine sounds strong, and was cheap. So i get it home and the first thing i noticed was you can shift in every gear perfect when car is off no clutch. i took that as a indication that tranny may be OK and it would/is clutch issue. He mentioned getting a new clutch installed right before the problems started. I checked the clutch pedal, i could wiggle it side to side a little but nothing too extreme. pedal didnt feel as stiff as my cheap daily beaters, and i could travel about a inch or two freely before i could feel it firm and stiffen up. I put new gas in it, and fired it up this morning. let it idle for 5 mins or so, then hopped in. I tried first, just to see what would happen and it seemed to go in fine, but in not used to the shifter so im not 100% it went in all the way. Well i pulled clutch out gave a little gas, nothing extreme, and immediately stopped when i heard constant grinding. So what i want to ask you guys is where to start? Does it seem like a clutch issue? Or time to dry my tears on a new trans? If you need any other info, just ask. PS. owner never recalls changing trans fluid???

Swap to end all swaps

Carlos Lopez of CLR Motorsports in Miami is currently working on the ultimate rotary swap for RX-8's. Carlos is an extremely well known rotary mechanic with an incredible amount of experience building high powered rotaries for racing and street.

The key to this swap is you will be able to run the OEM ECU to have all electronics work. The videos on YouTube are extremely detailed and informative.

When this is ready, the rx-8 community for swaps will be changed forever. If anyone is interested at all, I'd recommend watching the video series. Here is the first installment:

What's your opinion?

I've been doing some browsing just to see what I would eventually want my 8 to look like. Just wanting a few opinions on my favorites so far.

Picture #1: Shine Auto Project front bumper, Type F

Picture #2: Auto Craft Evolution rear bumber

As for spoilers and side skirts, I'm not for sure. I kind of like the stock spoiler look but I'd rather switch it for something else. For side skirts I was thinking veilside for a bit but I dont like how far the flare on the back end of the skirt sticks out. I'd appreciate and spoiler and sideskirt ideas anyone would like to post!
