What grease to use for starter rebuild?

jeudi 18 septembre 2014

My starter crapped out (wouldn't start spinning until 2-3 seconds after turning the key, intermittently wouldn't spin at all), so I got it swapped out for another one.

I want to try tearing down and rebuilding my old starter. It's probably going to need a thorough cleaning, so I'll need to re-grease everything before I re-assemble it, but I have little idea what grease to use.

I found a YouTube video* of some eastern European guy doing a 'how to' where he uses what is apparently graphite grease. Now, call me a noob, but I would have thought using something electrically conductive inside the mechanism of an electric motor was bad. Does it matter if it's conductive?

I have a whole tube of silicone grease - would that do the job? Otherwise, what should I be using?
