Hello! New S2 Owner =)

samedi 28 février 2015

Hi fellow 8 owners! I recently purchased a 1 owner 2009 Touring in white. This car popped not just my rotary cherry, but also my RWD cherry. The new owner's threads/ prospective buyer threads ( THANKS RIWWP! ) had me apprehensive at first, but I found this car with 55k at a reasonable price for the Bay Area, and in quite good condition... with the one unknown being compression =/. I went for the plunge anyways as the situation, and I was quite sure -- any rx-8 buying situation in my area, would not let me get a compression test within a reasonable amount of time ( I know, bad bad ). Anywhoo, I've budgeted for engine work anyways, and plan to get a test soon. Just changed to the latest revision coils right when I got it, and started premixing with Idemitsu right away. No trouble signs yet, and I have some more preventative maintenance done soon.

The car's been a blast to drive in the canyons (though expensive) and I can't believe how confidence inspiring it is! It feels like a more stable, bigger, less powerful s2000, which I'm okay with! For perspective, my daily for the last 10 years (and maybe a few more) is a 1997 Protege.

I've got only modest modifications planned for this car, as it'll be mostly street with some track driving planned: so just some brake lines, pads, suspension, wheels, and good sticky rubber for this car.

Anyways, I'm excited to live the rotary experience!

Room Fuse constant short "Fix"

TLDR - At the bottom if you just want to know a possible solution to this.

I had an issue today it went like this -

I just bought a 2004 A/T RX8 and it had the CE light on. Well I decided to take it to advance auto to have them run diagnostics on the ECU so I could fix the problem. Their diagnostics machine wouldn't even cut on LOL... so I took it to autozone right down the road and the guy tried to get a reading and it wouldn't register the car.

Said to hell with it and decided I'd just take it to a mechanic, well just so happens when I go to drive off, my radio didn't work. So I check the fuses of course. Yep, room fuse was blown - also had a 10 in it instead of the suggested 15, but hey I've had the car about a while with no issues.

Screwed around and came to find it didn't blow if I was outside the car, but when I sat down it would. Odd. Read up on some forums, here and other places, main suggestion was sun visor shorting and connectors at the small fuse box in the car. Checked that to no avail. About 20 fuses later I was getting pretty mad.

So I decided to really rethink the whole sitting in the car vs not - Same deal, put the fuse in while outside of the car, good to go, sit down and bam it blows. So I checked under the seat and noted there were quite a few wires. So I disconnected them all and turned the key forward (noting the airbag light flashing I reconnected them). Upon further investigation of the wires I noted that the seat seemed to have pressure on one of them - The one with the black connectors that seems more like a cable coming from it than wires - So I rose the seat up to maximum and seen the pressure was released from this wire. Put the fuse in and has not given me trouble since.

I believe the guy who tried to test my ECU codes at Auto Zone, being about 100lbs more than myself, pushed down and caused the wires to move in a way to cause the short. Only time will tell, I did not note any significant wire showing or anything like that at the connectors or any bare wires touching metal, however.

TLDR--- My short seemed to be in a wire under the driver seat - no seat warmers in my car - The wires with the black connectors at the center front of the seat towards the pedals, had pressure on them from the seat being adjusted too low. I have only seen two possible fixes in about 1hr or forum searches and this was not one of them. Perhaps this may help others.

MAF gasket size

Working my way through the first 100 dollars- got the MAF off and sprayed clean. To me the gasket is distended and looks too small (diameter) for the channel, although it has no outward signs of stretch. It's as clear in the photo as I could get, the gap is about the width of a penny without any stretch.

Click the image to open in full size.

So is this the wrong size, just stretched, or that's the way it normally fits, try not to pinch it getting it back in?

Thanks

Please help

Hi everybody. I'm new to this forum and in desperate need of help.

My 2004 rx8 6 speed won't go into any gears when started. My clutch has been squeaking for about a week., I was hoping it was maybe from a combination of extreme cold Canadian temperatures and not driving for a couple days. It has happened a couple weeks ago but went away until today. The only way to get it to roll is to slam into gears or to shut it off before shifting into first, and when attempting this, it sometimes stalls or won't start, almost as if the clutch isn't fully engaging. I have no choice but to take the risk of driving it until I can get it to a mechanic. I've been high revving and using the small roads to avoid shifting so I don't cause more damage. My dad suggested checking the fluid but I'm on my own in the city of edmonton with an extremely tight financial budget, and I have very little knowledge in regards to where any of those components are located or how to do the bleeding procedure. I've owned this car for 2 years and learned to drive manual with it, so I'm almost certain that my clutch has simply worn out., But I won't know for sure until I can afford to take it to a doctor.

Also, the clutch started feeling soft when this happened, and when driving for more than an hour, everything below the shift stick would always get very hot, even when I use the air conditioner., so it wouldn't be a faulty vent. And it always had a hard time starting., even with all new battery/starter/coils/spark plugs/wires, everything except for a clutch.

If anybody has any suggestions, it'd be most appreciated.

And thank you in advance!

Mike~

Please somebody help me

hi... ive never posted on here so I hope im on the right section sorry if im not.... ive had my 04 rx8 since new and have lived through the flooding, the new coils, plugs, leads etc but this one has me stummped and also my mechanic friend who has worked on rx8's for years.... again ive just done a coil, plug, lead change and de-flooded... My baby will start never 1st but always 2nd or 3rd time but only once a day... I cant go out in her at all or else she wont restart even after a few hours so i know its not due to the warm start issue... ive just cleaned the MAF sensor which has improved the problem a little now I can start her every 90 mins or so... i could understand it if when she fires up she runs like crap but she is firing and running like brand new which it what has everyone so puzzled... if anyone could please shed some light on anything else i can try that wont cost me an arm and a leg I would really appreciate it...

Thanks in advance...

{ FS } Series II R3 Transmission (37500 mi) WITH RECIEPT!!

Hey all I'm selling a series II manual transmission out of an R3 (2010). I bought it when I thought my tranny was toast. Turns out all I needed was a new pilot bearing and to machine the input shaft.

I paid about 1400 after tax for this tranny and I have the reciept. It has about 2 months of warranty even still on it (came with 6 months). I'm looking for 1000 + shipping from Niagara Falls, New York.

I live in Canada but I'm willing to drive this across the border to Buffalo/Niagara Falls Area to either ship from there or to meet up with someone.

Let me know. Pics are below.

Sorry the pics aren't great. I took them at night. There's a wee bit of surface rust on a couple of the parts but nothing that makes any difference to the operation of the transmission.

This is an extremely good price so I'm not taking anything below 1000 US$ plus shipping right now. Please don't ask I won't reply.

Cheers and let me know if you have any questions! If you pick it up I can probably throw in a drive shaft for free hah.

NEW RX-8 OWNER...Almost

Joined a couple of months and after months of dealing with dealerships and checking for new car postings daily. I final went to see an RX-8 last weekend.. White 2005 Grand Touring Manual with only 58,000 miles. It is soo clean... Car is garage kept perfect condition. On Sunday the seller is dropping it off to my house. I am sooooo excited I have been hunting this car down for a while and something always seems to be an issue. Just thought I'd share since I announced I would have one soon. I decided on a name today hahaha (Such a Female thing to do) I will post pics soon too :)

First things first...

1- Register the car on Monday

2-Inspection

3- Handle the Passenger Airbag Recall

4- I'm already looking at covers because this snow in NY is ridiculous

5- What else do I need? (first time car owner here..lucky me it's an RX-8)

Any advice? (I know the car will be expensive I've read a lot of threads.)

cold start problem

Hey guys not sure if this has been covered or not. I know rx8s have a common fault with cold starts. Iv owned mine for 2 years and since i bought it it struggles starting. Turn the key and it will take 3 or 4 seconds to start but it will start all the time. It may sound like its struggling but it does start and once its started it runs fine. In the summer the cold atarts did seem to go away. As soon as the winter came it started again. Is this just a common thing i have to live with or is there something that can be done. A year ago i changed the plugs and leads and it somehow set off the management light. I had the code read and the light is on because i need new plugs but theyve been done with brand new plugs and leads. Any help will be appreciated. The car has only done 50k thanks

Interestic Concept for new Rotary engine?

What does it take to lower my car?

Have a 2005 Mazda Rx-8...

From what I am told, all I need are the springs, not coil-overs?

Confused by that if anyone could explain...

Anyways, installation looks easy, if not I have a friend who can help me do it, since he did it to his other car.

I am looking at some springs on ebay, how trustworthy are those springs? What are the chances of them breaking?

And exactly how dramatic is a 1.2" inch drop? Doesn't sound like much, but im wondering if it will actually make a big difference ones I do drop it.

{ FS } 4port engine

jeudi 26 février 2015

I've got a 4port reman for sale that I pulled out of my 8. Had 34k~ on it when I pulled it out of my car to swap in a 6port. My local shop quoted me for 1600 on it bare block but I just want to get the whole thing gone. Prefer California sale but would ship if it came down to it.

Greetings from Switzerland

Hi there! I recently purchased my first motorvehicle in the form of a 2004 RX8. I'm not gonna lie the idea of a Wankelmotor under the hood was a pretty big selling point:ylsuper:. Aside from a dent on the right side and the CD player she seems to be in pretty good shape. Like I said this is not only my first radial engine vehicle but also my first personal car. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but I'd appreciate any pointers on handling and taking care of such a beast. Also if anyone has a good source for parts (I need to replace the CD mechanism, a plastic gizmo on the arm inside is busted) In europe or Switzerland I'd be much obliged.

TUDOR at Mosport (CTMP) July 9-12

Hey guys,

I got a response from Heather regarding this years TUDOR race at Mosport. Here we go:

Once again, Mazda will be hosting a car corral at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park when the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship rolls into town July 9-12, 2015.

This year, in lieu of providing each club with a block of tickets, I have worked with the track to bring the price of the Mazda Corral ticket down to $65, in line with the price of a regular weekend super-ticket. Your members will receive all the great benefits of the corral, including:

· 4-day admission

· Access to a private tented area and parking from Friday to Sunday

· A parade lap

· Driver meet and greet sessions

· BBQ Lunch on Sunday.

Tickets can be ordered using the attached order forms, or directly online at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park | Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

Please distribute this info to your group and let me know if there are any questions.

See you at the track!

Heather

Hope to see some of you there.

Fuel eceonomy

Hi guys !

How far (in Km) can a 2005 RX8 go if the needle is pointing at the bottom mark with the fuel warning light on ?

Correct Maintainence

I have had so many conflicting opinions on general maintenance for the RX8 thought I would post this to hopefully dispel any confusion..

1. I was told to get a compression check on my engine to show its condition and flag any issues. When at the Mazda garage they said they would do a Hot and Cold compression check and charge me for both, afterwards I was told I only needed the hot compression test and Mazda are pulling a fast one making me pay for both?

2. When using Petrol always use premium fuel (more expensive) yet at a local garage I met an RX 8 owner who said hed always used normal unleaded no problem?

3. Keep oil topped up as the Renesis rotary engine uses oil as part of the combustion process, when topping up use RX8 Mineral oil not semi or synthetic? yet I have met several people who use semi synthetic and a local garage put rx8 into computer and he fetched me semi synthetic oil..I currently use mineral oil Mazda bought but wondered is this a farce and can I use semi synthetic as apparently the car is designed to deal with it?

hope i can get some clarity 8)

CEL Masking

mercredi 25 février 2015

The thread about CEL vs Ready state prompted me to want to clarify what I see as a very easy question, but I don't fully understand.

With the AP and ATR, I have all of my engine codes active (all check boxes are checked), however, I am not receiving a CEL for my missing cat. I have been running without a cat for over a year.

Can someone explain if this is normal, or am I missing something?

How to hydroplane you Maxda RX8

Mileage readout on dash

On the dash of the RX8 there are 2 plastic pins to push, one resets your trip mileage and the other (on right) shows your mileage of the car from birth, however if you press the right button it shows another mileage readout, so the right pin shows 2 different mileages for car, can anyone explain what they are and how to identify each one?

Oh Geez... Not another LSX Swap!

Hey guys. First of all I'd like to say I'm not into the rotors/no-rotors type of argument. Always admired the rotary design and absolutely love their sound (still dig two stroke dirt bikes too). I know a little bit about them, have successfully rebuilt a NA S5 13b once. I always liked the RX8 and got really close to buy a brand new one in 2007, kind of glad I didn't. But if I had, it would probably be in mint condition to this day. I am OCD about my cars.

I have built a few drift cars in the past. I still have a pretty nice S14. Before I moved from AZ to MN, a friend of mine offered me an LS1 out of his 2001 WS6. I ended up buying on a whim.

Fast forward a couple of months and I was thinking I'd like to find a nice handling chassis to shove that thing into. All of a sudden that RX8 spark lit up: "I'm gonna look for an RX8 with a blown motor!" It wasn't two weeks until I came across to this (taking it home):

Click the image to open in full size.

This car was a total loss due to fire at only 42k miles. The previous owner got it in an auction and bought it to remove the powertrain and put it in his blown RX8. The car still started and ran perfectly.

3rd Gear Grind Under Load

So i've been having this problem for a while, but it was a little more pronounced today than usual. Any time I shift into 3rd gear above 6k rpm there's a little bit of a grind. It's never rejected a shift. At first I thought I was just driving sloppy, but even slowing down the shift and making sure the clutch is all the way to the floor it still happens. No other gears have this problem. I searched it and found that motor mounts going bad could be the culprit. Do you guys have any other suggestions before I spend money to fix it?

As always,

Thanks everybody!

{ FS } Pettit Racing Supercharger

Hey guys haven't been here in awhile. I've moved on from my rx8 and got a work truck, I haven't been really able to enjoy my rx8 much nowadays, I'm getting older :(. I've done so much to the car but I think I've come to a crossroad in my life where my rx8 is no longer a priority, and a more family oriented vehicle is more ideal. I've been debating for at least the past year on what to do, and I think bring back my rx8 to stock would be the best solution for now and go from there. For now I've decieded to sell my supercharger, I need to have it removed anyways for smog here in CA.

The supercharger is a Pettit Racing bought it used here on the forums, very rarely gets sold. Everything is functional and still on the vehicle, I will put up a video/pictures when I get a chance. The supercharger will come with instructions and all the equipment I used to get it up and running. It will come with a COB tuner. The only thing the buyer will need is professional tuning, I do have a tune on my vehicle but its specific to my build, so I don't recommend using my tune. I'll also include aftermarket digital boost gauge and AFS gauge/sensor + double gauge pod for side vent.

Its really does add the power the rx8 should have gotten, very fast and fun to drive. Very reliable and easy to install. Anyone looking to get the safest and most power out of the rx8 should consider the Pettit Racing Supercharger. I'll update this thread more this weekend. Just testing to see if there is any interest since I haven't been here in awhile. I'll looking at $3000 + shipping , for this complete kit, I'm located here in san diego, ca if looking to pick up. hit me here on the forums or txt me at 858-603-9484

Back in the fold

Picking up an 04 6mt, heated leather, supposedly nav somewhere behind dash, tomorrow. Could be a unicorn, according to the owner it pulls strong and according to Mazda it's on the original engine at 110k. The seller's throwing in an extra engine block sans alternator for 300 just in case. The plan is for my daughter to rebuild it while she learns to drive and undoubtedly destroys the clutch and engine in it. We all know how plans are.

Had a 79 12a, and 84 GSL-SE, and an 88 convertible, but it's been since the arrival of the above mentioned child since I've had them. Looking forward to getting a little greasy, learning something, and maybe doing some autoX at Pitt Race.

Kudos to the moderators and the many experts for sharing and documenting their knowledge (even if there are to many words:eyetwitch)

Question on keys

I only received on remote and key from owner when I purchased car. Whats the best way to get another set? Pay more and deal with dealer and get it done right? Or buy a blank from ebay and get the dealer to key it or look for a 3rd party to program and cut?

THANK YOU!

Power Steering Probz Please Help!!!

Okay, so Ill start by saying whenever I first bought the car early 2014 it was perfect and I had no problems. However, a few short weeks later I was involved in a wreck and the left front corner of my car was fucked up. When I would turn, the wheel would make a nosie and it would turn in a choppy, hesitant, resistant like manner, as if the power steering were cutting in and out. Anyways, I was able to get her looking pretty again however, I did not have the money to replace the rack and pinion at the same time it was in the body shop (because they said it needed to be replaced). In July, I replaced the rack and pinion, yet the power steering still did not even register. I still drove with out the power steering working because I had to, until I was able to take it to Mazda where they told me the EPS module needed to be replaced as well. Instead of spending 1200 at Mazda I purchased one on Ebay for way less and installed it. At first it seemed promising then, turned out to be worse. When I turn the wheel it resists very hard, but in like a copy way as a turn the wheel, in both directions, until going. off. I took it back to Mazda thinking it may just need a reflash. After a few hours they told me that EPS I just replaced was not giving any bad codes but the problem was still there. I gave them another day and they are telling me that the EPS was not even online any more, and that the rack and pinion is messed up. They also said they checked all my wires and the voltages were fine. Should I warranty out both parts and replace them at the same time???? Please help me IDK what to do anymore, I just got a lot of parts I want to put on but am thinking of just selling everything. ANY ADVISE??!

Great Forum

I've been reading this forum for several months and really appreciate the information here on the RX8 since it's a new animal to me. I love the RX7's as a kid and knew they were cool and had a rotary engine, but that was it. All of the New Member info helped me be wise in buying my 8 and know what to look for and what to have done prior to purchase. First thing I did was change plugs, wires & coils and an oil change. It also has a really short air intake, which isn't helping it and I plan to change it today back to stock.

This is a really easy forum to search for questions and that is helpful. Thanks to so many who did all of this work early on so that people like me coming late to the party can reap the benefits of your knowledge.

Hey everyone , new here to the club. Just purchased my 8 a month ago. I love the rotary motor but unfortunately this is my first. Which means I could use some pointers on maintenance and upgrades. I purchased an '06 8 shinka edition , it's the 6 speed manual transmission. It has relatively low miles , which is good but also cautions me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If any other 8 owners live in central florida or anyone who knows how to work on them , I would love to meet up

{WTB} Suspension, Bracing, and maybe some Wheels

I have a 2004 MT (Series 1). Looking for a variety of pieces. I'll consider well maintained used parts first and then consider new parts with decent prices. I'll pay for shipping costs and shipping will be to NY

The chassis has over 100k on it, so I need to tighten it up.

I'll pretty much consider any decent suspension with lower miles on it. I need a full set of four shocks & springs or a full set of coil overs. I'm specifically looking for:

  • Series 2 (R3 Bilsteins)

  • Series 1 Bilsteins (40th Anni)

  • Series 1 OEM (low miles or upgraded)

  • and again, any decent aftermarket that's not too harsh.

Also, if you have front and/or rear sways with good end links at a decent $$, throw me a price and I'll consider those as well.

I'm looking for bracing:

  • Mazdaspeed front

  • BEATRUSH Front, Rear, and/or Under

  • GTSpec Rear and/or Under

  • Equivalent custom bracing

-- I may consider the GTSpec 6 point front, but I want to install a Sohn adapter, and I'm unsure if it will fit with the full front brace. Also, I'll take bracing on a piece by piece basis; full sets unnecessary.

I'm looking for very specific wheels, full sets only with TPMS preferred:

  • 40th Anniversary Wheels

  • R3 Wheels

  • 2013 Mazdaspeed 3 Dark OEM Wheels

I have stock 6 speed MT wheels with Dunlop WinterSports available now and Enkei Black RPF1s in NY with Dunlop Direzzas that will take time to get to if there is trade/trade+cash interest.

Thanks for any help!

CEL vs ready state?

So I feel like a complete idiot and expect to be berated for this. But I swore I found this information once a long time ago, and now can't find it again.

Basically, gutted cat, need to pass emissions. I have an accessport and will figure out how to delete the CEL, but my question is that if I simply delete the CEL will the car still issue a flag on the ready state on the downstream O2 sensor even with the CEL deleted?

I'm pretty sure they plug in and look at all the errors, and just because the CEL is off, doesn't mean there won't be an error on the ready state for the O2 sensor. Anyone know if this is the case, or even know if you can just tell the computer using the accessport that the o2 sensor is fine and just report it as ready and good? I just got my AP today, but I've been reading and watching vids on it for a week and it doesn't seem I can find an actually answer to this question.

Feel free to call me an idiot while giving me the answer lol, I have to take my car in on Friday so I'm starting to get a bit frantic (I have to go to court next week with my updated tags or pay a $268 fine)

The Retrofit Source: Morimoto XB LED Fog Light Housings for Mazda.

Morimoto released their XB LED fog light housings into the market for plug and play housing swaps covering MANY manufacturers. One literally unbolts their fog light housings and bolt on Morimoto's XB LED fog light housings. The reviews are positive from "experts of lighting" and I definitely agree having seen quite a few of them. Cut off is sharp, light throw is wide and even, light output is crisp LED white and very strong. These lights are one of the best dedicated fog lights I've seen with the Land Rover Evoque LED fogs coming in close (which is saying a lot).

Unfortunately, The Retrofit Source and Morimoto do not provide a plug and play option for Mazda. I have requested TRS twice and they are finally considering the application with Morimoto. I sure as hell want these in my CX-5 and RX-8 because our factory H11 housings are damn near worthless in any situation, especially fog.

If anyone is interested, please support the official request I have made on their forum.

The other side is not bent but doesn't look perfectly straight.

I also notice the subframe bushing looked uneven on one side compared to the other.

Finally I have one of those rx8 with limit front driver camber and I will be adding a busing to correct the issue. Nothing seems out of the ordinary.

2007 Smart Key Question

When I bought the car I bought a new key for it because the one that came with the car was on its last leg. I came across a mazda Cx-7(Don't remember exactly which one) that has the similar key but the only difference is that there is no trunk button. Can I get it programmed to the car or not? I just threw away my original key because its completely dead. Thanks in advance.

Hello from Florida!

So I guess this is my first post despite having an account here for a while. I've read many threads here and I'm excited to get to know some of you on here.

My name is Ben, I am from Central Florida. I'm 21 and I've been an Rx8 owner for nearly 2 years now. When I'm not driving, I'm usually working as a computer tech or playing music. (my other car is a VW Passat.. my first). lol.

So far my experience with the 8 has been great. Within 2 months of owning the car, I had amassed 2 speeding tickets and one citation. I learned my lesson. (None since then). I haven't "modded" my car really. I've read the "vast" list of modifications for this line... Rather, I have installed a new Mishimoto rad and Exedy Clutch, aside from tires and brakes. I currently daily this car, but the long run hopes are to join a couple race clubs and try my hand at autocross. (Sebring International Raceway driving school advanced class actually drive Rx8's; intermediate drive Mx5)

I do personal photography for local race and auto events, and conventions, so I like taking a lot of photos, but here is my '05 8..
