Back behind a rotory

vendredi 30 septembre 2016

Hello , New rx8 owner signing in. Looking forward to performing a few mild upgrades on a red 2004 manual with 101,000 miles. My first car when I was a bit younger was a 72 rx 2 that I found with a bad 12a . I found an imported 13 b that I street ported and put a rotory truck 4 spd behind it. Was a very fun mini muscle car for me. Then several used rx 7s . Well after selling a v8 5spd mustang recently I got the yearning for that exciting whine of 9000 rpm. Have enjoyed this site since I found it and plan on gathering some much needed info on the rx8 platform. Thanks for having such a great forum. I plan on doing plenty of searches now that I'm onboard.

Anyone interested? I have engine out of car and tomorrow will be taking accessories and transmission off to sell core. I don't have enough posts to

{WTB} Yellow Injectors

Hey RX-8 community,

I'm here on the recommendation from miataturbo.net ; I drive a '93 Miata and I'm in the process of acquiring turbo parts. The injectors off of any year RX-8 are plug n play into the Miata!

I'm looking for a set of 4 injectors (Denso Yellow 420cc). I'm from Montreal Canada and would pay for any shipping necessary.

If anyone is hesitant about dealing with a fresh account like mine, please PM me and I can try my best to prove my legitimacy - my username on miataturbo is the same as here.

Thanks!

San Antonio, TX - Help with rotary compression test

Hey everyone. I'm flying into San Antonio, TX this coming Monday and looking at my first RX-8 to buy the next day. I was wondering if anyone here lives in the San Antonio/Austin area and is willing to help me perform a rotary compression test. I'm of course willing and able to compensate! Thank you!

Motor Mounts

Hi Guys,
The motor mounts on my '07 6MT are worn and need replacing. Mazda wants 950$ just for the parts. I was wondering if there were any ideas on where to get decent motor mounts at a decent price? Thanks

Brand new Air Force officer and brand (used) RX-8

jeudi 29 septembre 2016

Cheers everyone!

I'm flying out to my first duty station in Texas next week, and with a sum of money saved up for my first car, I'm finally able to buy the car that I've been drooling over for as far back as I can remember seeing it on the road.

I found a seller close to my base who's getting rid of his weekend-drive, 94K miles, mica red manual 6-speed 2005 RX-8. This individual is a trusted seller who owns a large collection of cars, and has taken meticulous care of this one in particular in the 4 years that he's owned it.

The car is stock with the exception of a K&N air intake and aftermarket exhaust.

Complete VIN check comes back excellent across the board, with an extremely well-documented history.

The day after I touch down in Te'has, I'm scheduled to take it for a test drive, and barring some glaringly obvious issues, I'll be driving it home (err, to my temporary base housing) the same day.

I consider myself very critical of car mods, and I don't intend to turn this thing into a rolling abomination.

That being said, I'm very comfortable working on cars, and I'm almost certainly going to make the following modifications over the course of the next couple years (in no particular order):

- Axial flow short shifter
- Window tint (dat Texas sun doe)
- The airbox mod found on these forums
- A very reasonable headunit/speaker/amp setup (none of that "rave in the trunk" ****... unless you're into that...)
- Clear corners
- AC/oil cooler screens
- Remove the VFAD (I'm still a little hazy on this one, but experienced individuals seem to recommend it)
- Swaybar
- A tire/wheel combination that's aesthetically reasonable and improves the handling (I'll get input on this one when I tackle it)
- A nice black repaint, because I'm not the biggest fan of mica red

I'm 99.9% sure this isn't the best place to ask this question, but here's to the .1%:

When I go for the test drive, are there any good "tests" you guys recommend I run, in terms of both driving it and visual inspection?

Thanks in advance and I can't wait to friggin' own this car.

Rear rotor lead plug fouling

Need some insight for diagnosing.
Car has BHR coils and midpipe (engine is rebuilt professionaly with maybe 20k on engine). Started to have a rough start and got rougher and rougher. It always drove fine after startup with no hesitation. Found that the rear rotor lead spark plug was slightly loose and gas soaked.

Replaced the plugs and it helped for like a day. Checked the plugs a few days later and the lead plug was soaked in gasoline again. Thought it was the iginition coil not firing properly so I replaced all the iginition coils and plugs with my stock setup to try and remedy the issue. Now the car is even worse off. It barely idles, misfires, and stutters.
Click the image to open in full size.Click the image to open in full size.
Pic is of new plug (3 days old)that is gas soaked. Will post old plug later.
So what do you guys think?
Could it be a leaky injector? Are leaky injectors an issue that comes up? Could it be ignition related? should i buy all new set of ignition coils and wires(old plugs and wires worked fine just replaced with BHR as a precaution)?

Caliper guide bolt bushings?

My front upper caliper guide bolt bushings (around the shank of the guide pin) seem to keep getting torn and binding. I'm using high temp ceramic disc brake parts lubricant.

Any of you track folks just tried running without them? The NC Miata guys suspect they are just for noise abatement.

Loud rattle when coming to a stop and idling??

mercredi 28 septembre 2016

My 2004 automatic has an obnoxiously loud rattle when I come to a stop or shift the car into gear after it gets to full operating temperature. I need a new AC compressor and that rattles as well so I pulled the AC and blower fuses and left them out. All I've done to the car so far has been a new mass air flow sensor, new plugs (coils and wires in great shape but not new), new vacuum solenoid and I just recently put in the new catalytic converter I needed so badly. I know I dearly need new exhaust headers and an intermediate pipe as well as a full muffler system, just waiting to get paid. But this loud rattle seems to be coming from the throttle body area? It's not real easy to pinpoint honestly but it had only been rattling like this in spurts but tonight driving home from work once the car got to full temperature the rattle was constant when I would come to a stop and idle. Idle also drops down to 750 while its rattling. Now, during the rattle the car does NOT shake at all. It's only the loud rattling sound. It was also pretty cold tonight so that could be a factor I'm not sure. Anybody have any ideas? I'd rather not throw parts at it and hope I get lucky if I don't have to lol

Tein Mono Flex - Are these legit?

Hi Guys,

I'mlooking at buying a set of used Tein Mono Flex coilovers from a member here. This is the ad that was placed: http://ift.tt/2dbSuPa

Can anyone tell me the legitimacy of the product? From the research I have done, the sticker on the coilover doesn't match those of the mono flex's that I have seen. See how the stickers on the one says the word "mono" but the used pair doesn't? I know there is a regular flex version, and a mono flex version. So which is it?

I don't know my way around this stuff enough to know, but I do need to get my suspension sorted, and this seems like a decent deal if its the real thing. Attached is an example of the sticker I have seen on the coilovers online, versus what is on the ones that are for sale.

Thanks for any help in advance!

{ FS } Rebuilt Renesis Bridgeport, hybrid peripheral exhaust engine and extractors

Hi folks,

Up for sale is a rebuilt 13B Renesis bridgeport hybrid peripheral port engine built by Ric Shaw racing (Sydney Australia).

The engine was built for forced induction, (turbo or supercharger).

It is still being run in and has done approximately 900 kilometers of the 1000 kilometer run in period ( I have the odometer reading on the receipt when engine was built 101670 k's, I will upload a pic of the receipt soon) and is still on run in tune, (revs to be kept under 4500 rpm)

Reason for sale is that I bumped into a friend of mine two weeks after having the engine rebuilt who I have not seen in years who now builds rotaries. He said he can do an FD REW conversion on the car for me and will only charge me for parts so I have decided to sell this engine to make way for the REW.

Approximately 35 kws over stock power in N/A form based off Ric Shaw's dyno results on rx8club.com.au with this porting configuration.

The engine has been fully rebuilt and doweled and was built to take 10 psi on pump (98 octane) and 15-16 psi on e85 and was built with a supercharger on the engine but then was going to be turboed.

Includes,

Bridgeport to suit forced induction,

New peripheral exhaust port rotor housings (GSL-SE Rotor Housings),

New 3 mm E&J FD RX7 apex seals, (these are not the short RX8 apex seal type but the FD RX7 tall apex seal)

Modified wire cut RX8 Rotors to suit FD RX7 tall apex seals,

New Solid corner seals, (not the key hole type that are prone to breaking)

Full seal kit, (All new side, corner, oil control ring seals with new springs and new o-rings and gaskets)

Lapped side plates,

Doweled,

New ceramic coated bearings,

New oil pump,

New oil pump chain,

Revolution aluminium oil pan / sump with baffle plate,

New engine mounts.

Custom stainless steel extractors to suit peripheral exhaust ports.

Lightweight flywheel,

The engine is in the car for inspection and start up.

THIS LISTING IS FOR THE SHORT BLOCK WITH SUMP,ENGINE MOUNTS, FLYWHEEL,WATER PUMP AND UPPER AND LOWER INLET MANIFOLDS, THROTTLE BODY AND CUSTOM STAINLESS EXTRACTORS ONLY.

NOT INCLUDED IN THE SALE IS THE, OIL METERING PUMP,COILS,SECONDARY AND AUXILLARY INJECTORS, PULLEY'S, ALTERNATOR,OIL FILTER PEDESTAL,CLUTCH PLATE.PRESSURE PLATE,THROW OUT BEARING AIR CONDITIONER PUMP OR ANY BOLT ON ENGINE PARTS, AGAIN JUST THE SHORT BLOCK WITH SUMP, ENGINE MOUNTS,FLYWHEEL, MANIFOLDS, THROTTLE BODY AND WATER PUMP IS FOR SALE.

CONDITIONS OF SALE ARE, THE ENGINE WILL NOT BE REMOVED FROM THE CAR UNTIL PAYMENT IS MADE IN FULL, NO EXCEPTIONS.

IT WILL TAKE APPROXIMATELY 4-5 DAYS FOR THE ENGINE TO BE REMOVED FROM THE CAR AND READY FOR PICK UP OR SHIPPING,

FREIGHT IS AVAILABLE, THE ENGINE CAN BE PACKAGED IN A WOODEN CRATE AND SENT VIA COURIER TO ANYWHERE IN AUSTRALIA OR VIA INTERNATIONAL SEA FREIGHT. (FREIGHT CALCULATED BY BUYER'S LOCATION)

No expense has been spared on the engine rebuild, the engine owes me $10,600 Aus, the extractors $1000 Aus, Im not open to offers, the engine is priced to sell.

Great engine for your worn out or blown up RX8, bolt in performance and reliabilty.

Engine is located in Sydney Australia.

DIY Remove eccentric shaft bolt

Just thought I would share. I finally opened up the rotary. After I broke a 19mm wrench and a socket adapter, I bought an impact socket. My 2 ft breaker wasn't enough, so I got creative...

FYI, I'm in the middle of cleaning out my garage and all of the car parts off of my floor so my wife and I can park in there this winter, so don't mind the mess.

So much stuff from the car before the V8 swap, I'll probably just toss it out.

HELP! Car won't start and screeches...

Bit of background to better help someone help me... Thank you in advance!
About 3 months ago I hit a deer in my 2005 GT and did some damage to the front drivers side of it... the car was still running after the collision, i pulled over to the side of the highway, got out and checked the damage, then got back in and turned the car off to call CAA (im in Canada, its our version of AAA). Called insurance the next day and they said I wasn't covered. So the cars been sitting in my driveway under a cover while I collected some money to fix it. Yesterday, I went to go start it to move it into a better spot to tow it to a body shop and found out theres more issues than just some body work.
THE PROBLEM:
When I turn the key instead of the normal sound of the engine trying to turn over it makes an awful screeching noise. It sounds like the starter is grinding against the flywheel except all of my belts are moving. I haven't tried much for fear of damaging anything more. I charged the battery to make sure it was getting enough power and then connected it to my winter car and used that as my power source with no success. Nothing seems to be in the way of any moving parts in the engine. I will post some pictures of the damage. *WARNING* images may be upsetting to car lovers lol. Any help is greatly appreciated.

DIY over fenders

Planning on running a 18x10.5 square set up for track purposes.

The wheels have a +15 offset and I'm running a set of 265/35/18 Hancock's, yes I said Hancock's cause I'm a Bridgestone man myself.

Just wondering if anyone on here has any experience making their own over fenders? Me and a buddy are going to take a shot at fabing up some prototypes to give me some more wheel room to fit these suckers.

I was looking into some sheet metal as its easy to cut and sturdy and whatnot but idk how easy it is to mold without using one of those roller ***** that costs hundreds if not thousands to buy.

Seen some fiberglass stuff made but it usually ends up looking like caked on **** so I'm not really into it.

Any info helps.

Rx-8 Side Seal and Corner Seal Clearences

Hello everyone,

I will be shaving down my side seals soon. In the Renesis Manual, I can't find any measurements for the gap between the corner seals and side seals.

The manual simply asks to "Measure the side seal and corner seal clearance and verify that it doesn't exceed the maximum". I have not found a section in the manual which lists the minimum and maximum clearence values.

Does anyone know what is the maximum recommended width and the minimum recommend width between the side seal and corner seal of each rotor?

Thanks

RX8 Experts required

Hi all.

Im looking at becoming a Rx8 owner but first need some advice.

Im looking to buy an 04plate with problems for £500

I work with the lad who is selling it so isnt trying to do me over.

The Engine has the EML on butthe cars starts fine but once at temperature it dies. He had it plugged in (unsure of code) but told me the O2 sensor in the car was causing this due to having too much unburnt fuel going through. Could this be a coil related issue or worse??

Thanks in advance and hope itis minor as always wanted rotary :-)

Catalytic Converter Problems

dimanche 25 septembre 2016

My 2007 RX8 has been acting strange lately. RPMs not matching right, dragging when shifting gears, and rumbling/vibrating in second gear. I red line it at least once a day when I drive it, and I noticed its revs sounded muffled, and they were not as sharp as they originally were. It has died twice on me since the first signs it started acting strange.

The engine light came on today, so I went to the local automotive store so they could scan it. The results said a "Leak" and "No flow". A gentleman parked next to my car asked about it, and I told him everything that was happening. He told me he had two RX8s of his own, and offered that I ran it hard for roughly twenty minutes, and "look under the car, find something glowing red, and beat the filter out of it." That or buy a new "pipe". He said that he went through this with one of his RX8s, and he just bought "pipes".

Ever since my RX8 has been acting odd, Ive been a lot easier with it. I'd like to know the best way to fix this cat, and how to prevent this from happening again?

Like I mentioned, I do drive it rough half the time as well as red line it (or at least get close) before I shut it off. Someone told me red lining the vehicle before shutting it off helps prevent flooding, and carbon build up. If this is true, I'm not sure. I've examined some of the forums but none quite match my situation.

"Likes" etiquette question

I've never hung out on a forum that used "Likes", as this one does. What is the proper etiquette when you receive one? Should you thank the "Liker", or is it not expected? Is there any point to them beyond just the nice feeling of knowing someone liked what you said?

Blown oil cooler line driver side

Hello, my 2007 rx8 with 72k blew a cooler line on the highway....I noticed the red oil light on, but i had good oil pressure& kept driving about 10 miles minding I had pressure.....stopped& put like half a quart of oil i had in it which barely showed on the stick ....put a pint of mystery oil in the gas hoping it would help& drove to get oil .....another 5 miles or so....put like 2 quarts in to top it off ....I didn't want to call a tow truck so I tried to quick epoxy the leak area....a steel line just ahead of the fitting into the cooler.....no way to splice it.....clamped a hose around it & hoped for the best......it still leaked by the way, I just hoped it slowed it so I could drive an hour to get home, which I did.....stopping once to add a quart more.......Is there any hope I could get lucky and not have damaged anything ....having good oil pressure the entire time????? It seems ok ....but I haven't driven it or ordered my new lines as of yet..... also any ideas on where I should buy new lines would be cool......thanks

Searching for a decent 8

Just would like to introduce myself as a new member. I must say I have used this forum alot over the years, but never had a reason to join as the answers I was looking for were available via the search bar. So with that being said, I have been searching for a series 1 rx8 for nearly 5 years. I have paid for 6 compression test only to find that the motor is failed or borderline. Now I don't mind replacing the motor but I would like to own the car for a little while before doing that. The funny thing is every owner insisted that there car was fine and a compression test was just a waste of money lol. But they would agree to it since I was footing the whole bill which typically was around 100 bucks. Anyways the search continues I think if I really want one I am just going to have to buy one with a boderline engine and replace it when it fails. It's a shame because it is a beautiful vehicle, alot nicer than the 1985 rx7 I bought in high school for 1300 dollars which was still running when I sold it with 180,xxx miles on it.

Wondow not working properly

Having an issue with my driver's side door window. Yesterday it started not wanting to go completely up or down. When I do get it to go up all the way if you flip the switch to the up position it starts making noise like gears are grinding. Wondering if anyone possibly knows what that would be. Don't think it matters in this case but it's a 2011 gt

hello new rx8 owner here, hint: my username. few questions i need help with

Proud new owner of the 2004 RX8 GT. Cant stop looking back at her every time I park her. That's smiles per dollar for me when parked and smiles per gallon when I brap her to clear carbon build up and turn a frown upside down!!!!

Searched but could NOT find much info on headlights and auto adjusting with mildly lowered 8's. Wanting to go with some tein s tech springs until wallet allows for true coil overs. Please no comments like "just save up for coil overs". I mean that with the mst respect. Anyways, prior to purchasing, I wanted to know if these springs would some what mess with the auto adjusting headlights. Its a small 1.4" drop so its not too major. Also not messing with the sway bars yet, which to my research is what mainly affects the auto adjusting due to sensor placement or something along those lines. But I do know that lowering the car will cause sway bar to shift slightly upward at mounting point ends which causes the sensor to have a slight change in angle causing slight change in voltage readouts. Havent seen much complaints about this either. But just wanted to ask to make sure all is okay before ordering. Have few more questions but will start with this. Direct experience answers would be a bonus.

A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

Before you rejoice and throw away your factory heads, there are a couple of unresolved wiring questions......

I had my display out about 6 months back and was able to control it via an Ardunio, but all connections except the data related control were still via a factory head unit; Meaning the proper termination (or suitable inputs) for all the non data connections has not been confirmed.
I will get back to this as soon as free time, skillset and access to suitable toolsets allow, but unfortunately it is not on my immediate horizon.
So any additional input\detail is very very welcome.

The wiring connections were kindly provided here
http://ift.tt/2cWGhSf ... 23/page13/

Also I did not make any in-depth notes during my (initial) display tests
as a result this information is made without reference to a functioning example and potentially there may be minor inaccuracies.

And now for the fun stuff.

I believe the processor used by the display is a NJU6623 from New Japan Radio
The product description is; 15-CHARACTER 1-LINE DOT MATRIX LCD CONTROLLER DRIVER with OUTPUT PORT
http://ift.tt/2cWFLnA ... 239_DS.pdf
If it’s not this display driver then it’s similar\from the same family.

Behavior is much like any standard LCD, but it is not exactly the same so read the data sheet carefully.
There are 2 pins for controlling display function(s), in the above link for the wiring connections these are described as mode0 and mode1
I have them flagged as RS (mode0) and AC (mode1), they are clearly detailed in the datasheets table of instructions.

Connectivity is a standard SPI interface 9600, MSBfrist, SPI_Mode3.

There are 3 separate methods employed to drive the Chars, Icons and (7)Segments.

The 12 main text characters on the display are via DDRAM addresses 0x80 to 0x8B,
You populate them from the NJU6623’s CGROM character map, or make your own symbols via the CGRAM Matrix – it’s pretty standard LCD type functionality.

The icons and the (clock) minute 7segments are driven by a matrix arrangement from addresses 0x90 to 0x9D.
Each icon address controls up to 5 icons (or minute segments) at registers 0x01, 0x02, 0x04, 0x08, 0x10 - I said ‘up to’ because all registers may not be utilized at any specific address.
To turn on all icons at address 0x92 you would write 0x1F to this address, to turn none of them on write 0x00 (IE to turn them off)
To turn on the first icon write 0x01 only, the second 0x02, the third 0x04, icons 1 and 3 0x05 etc.
If an icon is on and you update the address but do not rewrite it as on, it will be turned off.
So if you had all 5 icons at 0x92 turned on and you then wrote 0x02 to the address; icons 1,3,4,5 would be turned off, icon 2 would remain on.
You may also find you need to write 0x00 to all 0x9* addresses during the power-on sequence to ensure all icons are all initially off.

The (clock) 2 x Hour 7segment displays and (temp) 3 x 7segment displays are driven by the DDRAM addresses 0x8C and 0x8D
Note: these 2 DDRAM addresses are part of the main character display, but are effectively hidden as the main display only has 12 visible characters.
This means if you try to utilize the driver chips built-in scroll functions, you will end up with unexpected results as the visible chars are scrolled into the 0x8C/D address space and 0x8C/D chars scroll into the users view @ 0x80 to 0x8B.
It also means that you could populate these 2 addresses with chars from the standard CGROM char map, probably also producing an unexpected result.

The ‘on’ segments are set by creating a CGRAM custom char and copying it to the appropriate DDRAM address - basically you are creating a map which represents the active\on segments within the 7segment displays;
This utilizes 1 matrix column per character, with the 7 individual segments of the character controlled by the 7 rows of the matrix (rows 0-6).
The 7segments map as
Hh = DDRAM address 0x8C, driven by CGRAM column 0x10.
hH = DDRAM address 0x8C, driven by CGRAM column 0x08
Tmp = DDRAM address 0x8D, driven by CGRAM column 0x04
tMp = DDRAM address 0x8D, driven by CGRAM column 0x02
tmP = DDRAM address 0x8C, driven by CGRAM column 0x01
As each of the 7segment display characters references a separate column in the matrix, you could utilize 1 CGRAM char map for all 5 of the 7segment displays, by copying the char map to both 0x8C and 0x8D.

EG; For the ‘hours’ (Hh & hH) segments to read 11, a CGRAM character is created with the column 0x10 row2 and row5 set on, and 0x08 row2 and row5 set on
This CGRAM custom character is then written to the (unseen) display address of 0x8C.
Remember that the right hand 7segement temp (tmP) display is also driven by address 0x8C, so the above action would result in this 7segement being off.
If you then wanted to change either of the hour values you would write a new matrix map into a CGRAM address space and then update the display by copying this CGRAM custom char to the DDRAM address.

I found it easier to visualize some of this with a simulator LCD Simulator {/JavaScipt}.

Remember safety first
and it is important to maintain appropriate levels of hydration at all times.

Regards Tony

New RX8, few specific questions.

samedi 24 septembre 2016

Hi all,
I just bought my RX8, I found a used one that was in excellent condition as far as I can tell. It has a rebuilt engine with a little over 8k on it, new transmission, new struts, a new air intake. The car has been babied its whole life, and has a little over 113k miles on it. Its a 2004 Grand Touring Manual. That being said, I noticed that the car has three main problems with it, which may or may not be related to one another. The first is the passenger side flood light has shattered glass, the second is the headlight auto-leveling sensor is showing a warning light on the dash, and the third and most worrying is that the headlights seem to throw the beams way high when they are on normal, so that I blind anyone that is coming head on to my car. My first question is are any of these related, and if so how can I fix them, most specifically the height of the headlight beams and the warning light. I would not say I know a whole lot about cars, this is my first, but I am willing to learn and do work on the car within reason. I don't for example have the ability to raise the car on a lift, but I can probably find a jack laying around. Lastly, is there any way to get and replace the glass on the flood light short of buying a new floodlight as a whole.
Anything that you can tell me would help out a lot
Thanks!

Rx8 manual/DVDs

Hi, I'm just about to rebuild my 04 and wondering if any one knows where I can get a book on breaking down a rx8 engin and rebuilding it.
I have one for s1,2,3 rx7 but I'm guessing there a little different. :shocking:

So I gutted that Cat.. (power loss still not solved)😤 with torque screenshots

Gutted the cat, better flow indeed yet power loss still there.. failing ignition because of the partially clogged cat? I'm running out of ideas.. it's honestly bringing me down. No hard starts, it has to be something relatively small. Anything wrong anyone can point out on this screenshot? (Recorded at idle)
