4-port rebuilt porting and ECU agreement

vendredi 22 juillet 2016

Hi All,

new to this forum and my first post, with respect to the forum rules i am religated to this subforum so i cannot post this in the series 1 tech. i have just purchased an RX8 with a blown engine. it is my first RX8, however i have extensive experience rebuilding everything from previous generations of the RX series. The vehicle is a 2005 Auto.

Background: as the engine is coming apart anyway i would like to give the porting a "tickle" i.e. a baby stage. However while i was pulling the engine apart i did not notice an AFM so im assumed the ECU is mapped. After some searching on this forum and around the web it looks this looks to be the case, and i have done some reading about the various methods of "tuning" the stock ECU.

The Question: if i give the engine a small port job will the standard ECU compensate extra fuel for the extra air flow or will i end up just leaning out my nice new engine and having to pull it back out a couple weeks later. if the answer is No (it will not compensate, its mapped) what is the "easiest" and cehapest method/software to use to "tune"/re-program the standard ECU.

As im sure you are all aware this was a easy task back on previous generations. The standard ECU gets removed and an aftermarket one goes in to the tune of arounf $1500. However as i would like to keep this vehicle for a daily driver and not have to pour large amounts of money into aftermarket ECU's, wiring, dyno tuning etc (and keeping the auto trans) i would prefer to just modify the stock ECU.

may i have your opinions?

links to any threads discussing this would be great (if i have not already seen them) opinions from the pros or people who have done just this even better!

Many thanks all! :mdrmed:
