Do all RX8s come with a limited slip diff?

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Or are they an option? If they're an option, is there a way to tell if the car has one? What kind of diff is the limited slip, is it a Torsen? If so, is it a I or a II? Whatever kind it may be, do they have any issues, or are they reliable for the most part? Thanks.

2009-2010 coolant capacity change?

I know in the mid 2009 year they changed coolant tank because there were issues with the float but I was curious if that's where they got the extra quart difference. In the 2010 model specification pdf under changes coolant capacity is the only thing that comes up.

Rebuilt Engine

We had a new engine put into our 2004 RX8 due to a cracked casting. Any idea of what they actually do? Just replace the engine casting or put in a whole new engine? Thanks.

Rebuilt Engine

Rx8 engine failure

We had the engine in our 2004 RX8 replaced around 92K, due to a crack in the casting allowing water into the combustion chamber. Is this common? The dealer indicated it was. Didn't see is discussed in the engine failure thread.

Trouble with reverse.

samedi 30 juillet 2016

So I just bought a Metallic blue 2004 RX8 6speed (love it by the way). And for some reason it doesn't seem to want to go in reverse. I have to rev the engine really high with my foot on the clutch and then grind the gears really hard to get it in there. Anybody know why this is happening or how to fix it?

Trouble with reverse.

Long time lurker, stupid project I am excited to work on!

Hey everyone im Chris. I have been using this site for years and its been a wealth of knowledge in keeping up with my cars.

I own 2 Rx-8's both are 2004's

one is a sunlight silver Gt 6 speed. its had a reman engine swap done at the dealer at 73,000km the car now has 113,000KM The car is mostly stock aside from a typhoon intake by K&N, i doubt it makes any extra power but it sounds great and the filter is easy to swap and maintain.

the second car is a parts car. It is a 2004 Gt (?) automatic with the red and black leather interior. Ive stripped all the parts I could potentially use on my car and plan on putting the rest of the car on the for sale section here. If i dont get a decent offer I have an idea....

since this one was bought for 1,700.00 and ive pulled a good chunk of parts off of it, and its beyond repair I have been considering turning it into an offroad-esque car!

I dont expect this thing to be a baja truck by any means, but I figure if I slapped some really small rims with some meaty smaller tires I could have some fun.

there are some key issues, such as I dont know if the thing even runs!!!
I bought it salvage, no key. the car was rolled on its side and written off. I have almost no other info. the interior and most other components were in GREAT shape so I have hope

this is kinda the game plan

Weight reduction:
• Strip interior
 • Remove trunk
 • Remove sunroof
 • Remove air conditioning

Mechanical issues
• solve the key issue, I dont want to have to pay the dealer to re-key it. I wouild like to just be able to wire a switch in.
 • increase suspension clearance (I have a massive mechanical shop and welder I was just gonna add some sort of blocking to increase the height. I understand I may need to do some modifications to the a-arms to allow this....well explore this later
 • exhaust....its fine and in great shape visibly. since I would be bombing this thing through fields with stubble and brush and I dont want to burn any fields down. I was considfering just dumping the exhaust straight up.....but back pressure etc. so this might just turn me into puting some sort of skid plate on
 • roll cage. I own a business people count on me to pay there mortgage I want to refrain from death. Since I am also a moron the suggestion of being "smart" wont be applicable

Optional
• A bunch of L.E.D lights
 • Replace glass with meshing on side windows
 • Replace windshield and back window with lexan (back window will be flat and might not be the prettiest)
 • hilarious decals and badges. (something along the lines of what Top Gear does in making it so when the doors are open it says something funny)

Long time lurker, stupid project I am excited to work on!

What do you think of these mods?

I'm considering an RX as an autocross and track day car. I don't care about what class the car runs in ax, since I only run for fun. I want the car to remain streetable, I'd prefer a car that is nearly stock and has nothing more than basic bolt-ons, e.g. - catback, wheels, tires, shocks, springs, that sort of stuff.

I saw one for sale that has a lightened flywheel and D2 RS coilovers. I'm not familiar with that brand of coil over, and don't know if the flywheel is a worthwhile mod. What's the word on these items? Thanks.

Ford Australia inventor of the UTE comes to an end.

55 Years ago Ford Australia started production of the UTE (XK Series), their invention which stayed in production for 7 generations has come to an end, the beginning of the closure and shutdown of Ford Australia's auto manufacturing.

Ford created the concept of a ute after receiving a letter from a Victorian farmer’s wife in 1933 requesting a vehicle civilised enough to drive to church on Sundays and practical enough to take pigs to market on Mondays.

The Ford Australian UTE started the 'pickup' era, still alive today.

Hey guys seen a few different videos of the new rx vehicle coming for 2017. The first I watch was of a four door car that was pretty close to the lines of the rx-vision

The next car I seen was way closer to a lotus than anything resembling an rx car of the past

And I seen another picture that really resembles the rx8

I have to say I would've really liked the vision concept car to become a reality. That long hood just hypnotizes me. I also really hope it's not the lotus styled car. To me Mazda would be betraying the heritage of the rx series of cars if that ugly thing was released.

What's your thoughts?

{ FS } Corksport midpipe 1 resonator, 1 cat

Hi all,

What: Corksport catted midpipe; 2 years/20,000km of use
Where: Montreal
How much: $200CDN + shipping.
Can deliver around Montreal/Laval/Ottawa.

I removed my corksport mid-pipe from the car to go back to stock, so it's up for sale. Pipe is in good shape, no complaints. Worked fine when removed from the car, visually everything checks out. Removed because I wasn't enjoying the exhaust smell and I'm cutting down on racing. Primary reason I had it originally was to save my OE cat from racing conditions.

It has a resonator and a 100cpi catalytic converter. The exhaust is smellier than stock, less smelly than no cat at all and importantly, no check engine light.

With the stock muffler and with the MS muffler the exhaust has a nice aggressive tone and a slight off-throttle gurgle. No rasp. Definitely louder than the stock exhaust, slight drone, but you can still carry a conversation with your passengers. I should have taken a recording before removing it :/

Pictures coming.

Thanks for looking!

O2 sensor says no voltage

Hey guys! I'm a new 8 owner, don't hate please I have the 4-speed automatic, only because I got it for a steal and every one where we looked wanted WAAAY too much for the car, this one has good compression but could use a tune up. Any how the CEL is on and we plugged a scanner into it and it shows that the rear O2 sensor is flat lined with no voltage at all, while the loop is closed and it says all other systems complete the tests, the car still runs fine starts right up with no issues and has plenty of power but is using way more gas than it should, I'm just unsure what to do, please help? The loop is closed and I read on another forum that if the front O2 sensor is bad the loop wouldn't be able to close, so with that said, any suggestions as to the actions I take from here? I know a lot and did a lot of research before getting the car, and it's throwing a too lean code because of the sensor issue. So should I'm thinking I should just replace both sensors with the OEM replacement and get a new cat and call it done, do you guys think that would likely fix my issue?

Track Alignment In Houston

Guys, as the title states I'm looking for a shop in the Houston area to do an alignment on my 09.
I don't really trust most of the chain stores as Ive seen some pretty shady things happen on a few friends cars.
So, who in Houston is familiar with the 8s and aligning them to autocross or track specs?

Thanks

New owner from the Cayman Islands

Good morning everyone.

Just wanted to quickly introduce myself here - just picked up the car directly in from Japan and wanted to say hi. Quickly about me, I am 26 and currently living on Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands. I am originally from Victoria, BC and previous to this I was a Mazda6 owner. See photo of my last baby.

Other cars in the stable include a Honda Fit-AWD - also from Japan - and a Gilera Runner 125cc bike - from Italy.

Plans for the car - not much since parts are a fortune to bring on island. Since it was from auction, there are naturally some parts which don't work well or need some TLC. It also yells at me in Japanese every time i turn it on, so that's fun. Anyway, 2004 model with about 78,000kms. Here she is. Look forward to getting to know you all! Let me know if you need a Cayman holiday - happy to hook anyone up.

New and looking for car with blown engine

New to the forums. I'm looking for a RX8 with a blown engine (should be lots of those) to build into a track car. Only real requirements are manual and no sunroof. Engine doesn't have to be blown, but it's getting yanked out either way. I've been browsing the forums for a while but am new to Rx8's and rotaries. Plain is to swap in a newer v6 and look for 350HP to the wheels. With weight reduction, that should make for a reasonably quick ride. My original plan to was build an FD RX7, but I decided the newer platform would make for a more economical track ride.

Other rides include a spec'ish miata as my current track ride, 95 4runner as the off road and Benz C63 AMG as the daily. If anyone knows of a donor car close to East Tennessee, hit me up. Hoping to purchase in the next couple of months so I can build her over the winter.

All the lights on dash coming on!!

Hey guys, so i recently purchased an 06 rx8 6sp and I absolutely love it. Ive been having a problem tho, sometimes when im driving all the lights on the dash come and the power steering stops working and the speed also stays at 0. When i switch of the car the problem goes. This has happened about 3 times and ive had the car for about 15 days. Also I recently put after market gauges on my car ( oil temp, oil pressure, water temp) but im not sure what the normal readings are supposed to be. Thanks!!

AT to MT conversion Electrical Details

mardi 26 juillet 2016

Hi Guys,

so with respect to my first thread, i have an AT 4-port 2005 version that had a very tired engine, the engine/box was pulled out and the engine pulled down. So the original plan was to just rebuild the engine, give the porting a little tickle and throw it back in a drive it as a daily driver. Now as most of us would think and say when were standing in the garage looking at the engine bay void of a powerplant.. "well ive gone this far, if im going to do a rebuild why not rebuild a 6-port and do the manual conversion at the same time"

So, after a few beers and some thought i figured my best shot at this would be to purchase a complete 6-spd damaged car or at minimum a front cut.. thus, I managed to purchase a half cut JDM 6-speed that needs a rebuild in the engine department (no problem). i have read a bunch of threads and info on the do's and dont's of doing this conversion.

here
and here

are just a couple examples (above).

My question and this thread is not going to be directed at the mechanical aspect of this conversion (that is all above) but at the electrical. specifically the PCM, Key/transponder, the PATS system, any other CAN related devices, between JDM and AUS/NZ model vehicles.

the original vehicle i have is a New Zealand new, i can see already that the keys are different. my original key looks to have the "keyless" entry buttons on it, while the JDM cut has just a simple key with inbuilt transponder.

so after i swap out the PCM to the 6-port one and sort out my mechanical locks, or get some new keys to suit my barrels and the JDM PCM, what problems will i run into in terms of my Entry Control Module?

shall i go as far as just swapping out the entire body loom under the dash? (pulling my dash out and swapping everything under there) or shall i just try to get away with using my existing body loom and just the JDM engine/PCM loom and then seeing what problems i run into with the Entry Control Module?

ASH8 i know you have allot of info on this, could you shed any light on this?

ill keep this thread updated with the progress and pics.

P0139 and P2096 CEL correlated?

So, I have an '05 RX-8 that lies at 122k miles atm, changed the motor recently with one of lower mileage. Car came with certain mods, I added some bolt-ons to the list, but it's nothing fancy. I've been through a troubleshooting stage where I tried getting rid of all my CEL codes so I can pass emissions, and it worked. Car was running fine (other than a dying transmission and such).

After passing emissions I decided to put my resonated midpipe back on that came with the car when i bought it, but I put a CAT on so I can pass emissions. Keep in mind, at this point, no CEL or anything, all is running well, all the emissions monitors ready. 200 or so miles into the midpipe, I was expecting a catalytic efficiency CEL, but NOTHING! To my surprise even the Catalytic monitor was ready. Then I started getting a CEL on and off that had to do with the P0139 code, O2 sensor circuit slow response (bank 1 sensor 2). Some said it's a common code if you have a midpipe or things of the sort, so I ignored it. 400 miles into my midpipe and now I'm getting the P2096 code, Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean (bank 1). It triggered after a 45 minute drive in really hot weather on the highway.

Could the 2 be correlated somehow? Anything to worry about? I have an AEM cold air intake, if that helps at all to track down what's going on. I was thinking maybe cleaning the MAF sensor and the other sensor on it would possibly do anything? I know that running lean means that not enough fuel is getting into the system and it's pretty bad for the engine. I just don't know if the O2 sensor has anything to do with it. I've tried some pre-mixing, very low ratios, and the next 2 fillups I would leave it alone and throw in some fuel injector cleaner.

Weird Starting Problem

Okay, so some of you know I bought an 04 Auto RX8 about a year ago that wouldnt start. Trying to get it running I have replaced the fuel pump (housing was cracked, replaced with used pump), replaced the starter with one for an 07 (2kw), installed an Optima RedTop battery, replaced plugs, swapped to an LS ignition, and replaced the ESS sensor. I just recently got access to another RX8 at a parts yard that I was able to pull the MAF sensor, fuel pump resistor, and multiple relays from. I swapped them with mine and it still wouldnt start so I put my MAF sensor back on. Thinking it may be fouled plugs I jacked the front end up (remember this part, front was about 1.5ft higher than the rear) and swapped in a fresh set of plugs. It started on the second try. Let it warm up and then shut it off and tried to restart. First warm resart took 3 tries. Then I was successfully able to start it warm 10 times (each time took a few seconds but happened on the first key turn). This is the first time its ever started warm. I was going to do some exhaust work on it today so I jacked the rear up and set it on ramps, and then tried to start it. No joy. What would cause it to start when the front is 1.5ft higher than the rear but not start when its level?

TL;DR: Bought a used 04 RX8 with starting issues. Replaced a bunch of parts, including ignition, used fuel pump, etc. Car takes 30-45 minutes of jumping to start cold and hesitates and wont start hot if on level ground. But car will start 4/5 times if front is higher than rear of car. What could be wrong?

ABS and Traction Control Lights Turning On Randomly

So, after a LONG time without my car driving around, I finally got it all good to go.

The only issue now, is that the ABS and Traction Control lights will turn on randomly while driving. My guess is since it has been sitting for so long, that one of the calipers must be sticking?

Everything I have searched on here led people to say it has to do with LED lights, which I don't know why that would be (and I have had LED lights for my rear lights forever).

I might have to check the calipers to make sure the breaks are working, but could this lead to the lights tripping on?

Also, I haven't checked my fuses, but I don't think that would be the case since the car typically turns on without any lights.

- Alignment - -2.0 camber up front, -1.3 rear, 0 toe all around
- weighed 2830# at Toledo pro last year (compare to frs @ 2750)

Wheels/Tires:
-4 17x8 +48 O.Z. ALLEGGERITA HLT (15.6lbs $1200 new) with 245/40-17 RE71r’s (100 runs)
-4 17x8 +45 TRmotorsports FF10 (16.6lbs) with new 245/40-17 RE71r’s ($1450 new)
-4 17x8 +45 Kosei K1-TS (~15lbs) with 235/45 Continental DW’s (~50% tread)

It’s a very balanced car in CS trim. Has no bad habits and will rotate as much as you want it to on entry if you play with the shocks. With the bumpstops it also is very neutral on throttle. I still think it can get it done in CS against the ND and twins, especially on a higher speed course. ~63mph in 2nd gear. Its also one of the cheapest ways to get into a nationally competitive car and class in solo. Easily fits 4 tires in back seats and luggage in the trunk.

Its been a fun car while I have had it and makes a great street car as well. Looking for $9200 with all 3 sets of wheels. Basically ready to go for nationals with the new set of rubber. Can negotiate price based on wheels/shocks/etc. Located in Ann Arbor, MI area but would be open to delivery at Nationals as well.

Help with engine stud kit

lundi 25 juillet 2016

My build is finally progressing. Been way too long, but you play the hand you're dealt.

I am converting my stock four port to a six port. I want to reinforce the block as much as possible, but have gotten conflicting advice from a lot of people. I would appreciate any input that can be provided. My goals for this project were never to make huge power, but if upgrades need to be made, this is the time.

Option 1: add two additional Mazda dowel pins

Option 2: add five 12mm studs (some machining)

Option 3: replace all tension bolts with 10mm studs (no machining)

Option 4: replace all tension boots with 12mm studs (lots of machining)

Thanks for your help

I want to post in parts section

I have a whopping 3 post (4 if you count this one), so you can I say I am not the biggest contributer to RX8club. With that being said, I want to post in the parts section. I need a part for my car, I need a 2006 Shinka shift ****, the one with the white top and not the black.

Right now I have the typical black top one, it would be nice to have the white one again. Can let me know how I can post in the parts section, if that is possible. Worst case scenario I may be able to find one at Sevenstock 19 this year, I was hopping to have it before that though.

Thanks,

Paul

{ FS } Racing Beat - REVi Ram Air Duct

For sale, Racing Beat REVi Ram Air Duct.

Sells new for US$150 + tax, asking C$120.

Located in Toronto

Racing Beat offers our Ram Air Duct for use with the Racing Beat REVi Intake Kit on all 2004-2008 RX-8s. The inlet of this duct is positioned in the mouth opening of the Mazda RX-8 to allow cooler ambient air to be force-fed directly into the REVi intake tract, converting your intake into a true "cold-air" intake system!

Designed by Racing Beat, this high-density polyethylene intake duct mounts under the nose of your RX-8 and directs air into the inlet of the REVi Intake Kit. This duct can also be used with the stock intake box or aftermarket intake kits to direct cooler air into the engine compartment.

The installation of this duct requires the removal of the nose from the RX-8 and can easily be undertaken by 1-2 people in about an hour. Fully detailed instructions, with numerous photos included, will guide you through the installation process. Although this process might sound rather challenging, the process is relatively straightforward and can be undertaken using only simple hand-tools.
