I'm going to be installing a turbo on my rx8 pretty soon, I'm waiting to buy a complete setup with everything I've seen a few around but don't know the best one to install on my rx8! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys!

I've been lurking on RX8Club.com ever since I got my RX8 four months ago.. but I finally decided to create an account come 2017.

I managed to nab a red 2007 sport 6SP with only 50k miles for $6500 back in August from my buddy. Had a full exhaust system and a great engine and I've done a (relatively speaking) ton of work to it since, mostly with the help of posts on here.

Tablet in the nav hood running Torque Pro, 220A alternator, BHR ignition kit. Got a Sohn adapter on the way! Also installed a Pioneer headunit with a full-blown Rockford Fosgate audio system (2 12" subs in custom enclosure, door speakers, rear deck speakers, dynamat errwhere)

Glad to be a part of the family.

I just got the BHR kit installed today and it's like a whole new car.. I think my ignition coils were failing, three of them had those white spots and one was completely clean.

Just took this video of my RX-8 shooting flames post-BHR install.. camera man done goofed and only got one exhaust, but hey.

hi guys new to the forum!

I have a 05 rx8

I was driving and hoped on the freeway and then my car just stopped running and wouldn't start back up. It was also raining. After awhile when I towed it back to the house I got it to start.

I'm having an issue where i have cel
Code is p0302.

I changed the spark plugs and wires and new coils.

Cleaned the maf sensor. Also took out the ssv and cleaned that super clean.

It sounds like it's running on rotor.

S2 rear suspension geometry change

So... what actually IS the suspension geometry change from S1 to S2? What exactly did they change, and what was the effect? I get that there were parts changes, and that the intent was "better stability" or "better handling." What exactly does that mean? Different camber/toe curves? Higher/lower roll center? Less excess movement? I'd have thought someone would have figured this out and posted about it, but I can't find it anywhere.

The only hint I've found so far is this, from the PDF attached in this post:

Kind of suggests toe control was the point. But the wording makes it unclear whether that extra toe control comes just from the beefed-up upper lateral link or from the geometry revision as well.

Anyone have any input on this? Is there an authoritative source somewhere that I'm missing?

Anyone have any rear interior creaking noises?

I'm almost 100% positive its coming from the passengers side back trim near the trunk. anytime I go over bumps, etc, it creaks like crazy. Driving me freaking mad. I was just curious as to if anyone has had this happen to them, my last rx8 did the same thing. I did a search but the results were inconclusive.

I just read an article asking "who should partner with Caterham ". That looks like an interesting fantasy for a rotary heart. They seem to be looking at an fr na entry. I may cross some ethical purists code by thinking of that union but they are looking for a 40k sports car offering. This just sounds too good not to consider all the directions this could go.

Check engine light flashing/misfire

I went out to warm my car up yesterday. I started it and it started just fine and went back inside. When I went to leave 10/15 min later my car was running very rough and the check engine light was flashing. I tryed revving it up a little bit fit a minute or two and didn't change. Now it barely ideals and runs super rough with the check engine light flashing. I didn't drive it then and left it parked. Today I tryed starting it again and it didn't want to start. Has to give it a little gas to get it started and still ran super rough with the light still flashing. I'm wondering if anyone might know what's causing this? Thanks for any help.

Keyless entry not working

I think I have it narrowed down to the keyless entry receiver. Just going to check the data link continuity between the keyless entry receiver and module, but really have no reason to think there is anything wrong with the wires. I noticed my receiver looks like it got wet (evident on the sticker) I'm not sure if this is the root cause of the failure or not but all the used ones I was checking out on ebay had also been wet.


I'll probably just go ahead and buy a good used receiver but I am concerned about getting it not being compatible with my fob.


Apparently there are 2 different model numbers for the fobs (assumingly different frequencies) and I am concerned that there could be 2 different receivers.


Does any one know if I need a specific receiver?

just bought the rx. Is this ok or does it need replaced? I can return it to dealership for full refund but it also said it needed a catalytic converter. would that cause any dip in this. It stalls when idling but is also sluggish on the throttle which makes me think cat.

I learned today that Jim Mederer has died on Dec 27. Jim was co-founder of Racing Beat A History of Racing absolute pioneers in rotary engine technology and development. He owned several land speed records at Bonneville with RX-7s, one after coming back from a spectacular crash the year before which had him flying through the air and landing on the roof. He developed the tune on my current car 🙂 and was responsible for building and tuning the alcohol fueled 3rotor in the amazing Mazda Furai http://ift.tt/2idtOdg which met It's untimely end at the hands of Top Gear http://ift.tt/2idAtEq The car enthusiast world just lost a giant. Sub setup

Okay so I just got my 04 and I was thinking about putting a sub box/system in the trunk. I noticed that there is a bar and further researching it's the strut bar? I was just wondering if it's possible to take out and if so will it affect the way the car drives or performs. Thanks!

I have four Primwell (Chinese brand) Z rated tires. These came off my Buick, they will fit on the 8 though. They have some minor cupping due to a bad alignment on the other car. The tires handle well and there were no drive-ability issues, for me it was issue of extra noise introduced into the cabin. On the 8 it would not be so bad, but on my car where I am not used to having cabin noise it was more than an annoyance. At any rate they are cheap enough to burn up on the track or something. Or everyday use if the noise does not bother you. I am in Dallas, so if you want them local pick up is preferred. I will ship at buyers expense of course. You will have to give me a couple days to acquire boxes to ship them in. Someone come get these out of my shed!

New Member - Is my friend being scammed on his RX8 build?

Hi everyone - I come from the land of MINI Coopers and BMWs. I'm an active user over at NorthAmericanMotoring. But I wanted to reach out to this community because of your depth of knowledge.

I am worried that a friend of mine is being scammed. He is very friendly, agreeable and easily influenced. I'm not well-versed to the world of Mazdas and rotary engines, so I wanted to reach out to this community for advice since you all understand the platform better than I ever could.

My friend has a RX8 that he adores and loves. A couple years ago, he joined a local RX8 club and made a lot of new friends. He has always made modifications to his car, but he's starting to go down a path of some extreme builds. I think a part of that might be under the influence of his new circle of friends. Some of them are wrenchers.

Fast forward to now, his car has not been running since last March (2016). He claims that his mechanic just had a part shipped out to build his new motor. The details are a bit sketchy (English is not his first language) but here is what I can gather. He first sold his RX8 engine to start a engine swap.

Currently he is $7,000 out of pocket. He claims it's all in parts and his labor is free. Here is what the $7,000 breaks down to:

-The new engine which is a 26B Engine (4 rotors).

-Bolts (?? - not sure what this is)

-Count weight (?? - not sure what this is)

-E Shaft

The parts are all from New Zealand. From a shop called PPRE (Pulse Performance Race Engineering).

He claims that after all this, he just needs to drop a bit more money on a new clutch to hold all the new power and torque.

My questions...

-Is someone pulling his leg?

-Is PPRE legit?

-Is $7K normal for all these parts?

I have other concerns where he might be influenced to build out a racing spec motor/car since he doesn't race, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he wants to get into racing.

I've a RX8 2010 MT / 78.000 km (48750 miles) and i use it for racing competition.

Buuut! I've a problem at the moment of accelerate ... with my team are sure the problem is in the fuelp pump or tank.

We´re thinking in change the fuel tank and pump ... but we dont know how to do that ... :( the season starts on March and i need a solution asap! :(

Series II Clutch Replacement

The clutch recently went on my RX8, I got in my car to leave work the other day and could not get into reverse. Getting the car into first is difficult and gear changes from there on are clunky, difficult and there is a whine while I'm driving which going through the forum seems to be the Throwout bearing.

Took it to a local garage and called around, it seems most shops around are charging $2000-$2200 for parts and labor. That would be a new clutch kit, flywheel resurface (or replacement), and a slave cylinder. That seems crazy expensive so I'm trying to do whatever I can to bring the cost down.

I see Mazmart has an Exedy OEM Replacement Kit for $350 which includes the release bearing. Is this the go to kit or is there something else I should go for?

Any flywheel recommendations? I can't seem to find one on Mazmart, I see BHR have a couple for 250-350 depending on which one you get. Whats an OEM flywheel cost?

Any other parts you guys would recommend getting?

My plan is to bring all the parts to a garage and just have them throw them in. How is the DIY clutch replacement? Me and my buddy are pretty mechanically savvy but don't have access to a lift. This is my main mode of transportation (The S1000RR doesn't work too well in these NJ Winters) so I can't spend multiple weekends putting this clutch in.

I appreciate all the help and recommendations.

I've been asking some questions about the Öhlins Road & Track coilover kit and thought the answers might be of some use.

Out of courtesy, I'm only posting what I've had explicit permission to share. So far, I have permission to post the answers I've gotten from Öhlins USA; waiting for the same from the other company I've been communicating with. I'll edit this post with more as it comes.

My questions are edited for concision; replies are pasted verbatim.


Q: The kit is the same for all RX-8s. Did Öhlins's testing account for the suspension geometry differences on the S2, or the sway bar changes across the years and trim levels?

IamFodi note: While the above doesn't explicitly cover the geometry differences, it suggests there's no evidence that Öhlins repeated their testing on the S2 (though obviously S2 owners seem to like the kit). I've been searching for what exactly the suspension geometry differences are, hoping that might give some clues as to whether the optimal spring rates would be different. If anyone has any input on that, please post!

Q: Will the kit be able to achieve stock ride height?

We cannot swap springs, though. The kit is sold as-is. Additionally, finding replacement springs might be an issue: The front springs on the RX8 are common 2.5” x 8” springs, but the rear setup is unique to Mazda, so finding replacements will be difficult. However, you can purchase a $40 spring converter that will allow you to run traditional springs, but, again, I highly recommend just trying the kit as it is.

Hello guys. I am writing this post as I have a big favor to ask of you.

Whenever I start the engine in the morning (very cold weather recently), my 2005 RX8 (8,500miles) has irregular emissions and even make donuts at the exhaust muffler (plz see the attached video clips). Now CEL is on (error code: P0301-rotor 1 misfire). But after warming up, idling and exhausting become RELATIVELY stable (still making donuts at the muffler).


I’ve replaced wires, coils, plugs, air filter and even cleaned the MAF sensor. But there is still same issue. FYI, I got the engine compression test two months ago and the result was pretty good (rotor 1 7.1-7.2-7.1 / rotor 2 7.8-7.9-7.8). I have no idea what I should do &( (after driving my RX8 in the US for 6 years, I’ve taken my car to Korea a few months ago. There are no official dealer shops here.).

I plan to replace injectors, crank sensors, and O2 sensor soon, but I need your advice plz!

Starts up but stalls when hot only sometimes

Sometimes my car's idle drops to 700 after I start it after a hard drive. Today after hard drive I started it up and it died.. it did it again right afterwards. Compression tested fine by a rotory specialist couple weeks ago. Any ideas? Vacuum leak? My cat is gutted. I have p2070 at the moment and I will be taking care of that soon. Maf is 4.6 at idle, vacuum almost 19in at idle, ltft is 10 stft is 2.

Hello,

Unfortunately it has come time to part with my Rx8. Here's some background on why I'm selling the car.

About a month ago (just a week before I had scheduled a clutch replacement) I was coming off a freeway off ramp and the clutch wouldn't disengage. I was able to pull to the side of the road as the car stalled. In the weeks leading up to this event I had felt the clutch slipping if I accelerated rapidly and had scheduled a clutch replacement.

I had my car towed to Mazda of Riverside the next morning for them to take a look at it. One of the techs recommended we do a compression test before dropping the transmission as it wouldn't make sense to put a new clutch on a car that would soon need a new engine. Unfortunately one of the rotors showed low compression readings. I'll attach the compression printout.

While I've really enjoyed owning and working on this car it's come time to part ways. If I had garage space I'd probably keep the RX8, but I only have space for my daily driver....

Vehicle Information:
Mileage: 124,000 miles (original engine)
Manual Transmission sport model
VIN: JM1FE173X50142560

Here's a history of the vehicle:
-Purchased from original owner in 2011 at about 50,000 miles
-Original owner had regular service at Mazda dealer (I have all the original records including window sticker)
-After purchase I took over all regular maintenance (Castrol 5w-20 oil change every 3,000 miles, Redline MT-90 transmission, etc.)
-Car was always garaged: kept it in the parking structure during college at Cal Poly Pomona, moved out to LA were it spent nights in my apartment complex parking garage and days in the garage at work

The GOOD:
-Cllean exterior, always garaged (as mentioned above) just minor nicks that are normal for a car with over 120,000 miles. A good portion of the car was recently repainted after I scraped a pillar in my parking structure. All paint was done at a AAA recommended shop, Ben Clymer's and carries a warranty.
-Interior is clean as well, the seats have no rips or stains, just minor scratches on some of the console plastic
-New interstate battery installed, less than 3 months old
-Replaced radiator and coolant reservoir

Cel flashing cant figure it out

Okay guys my cel is flashing however it only does it once in awhile. I replaced wires plugs and coil packs. It still feels like its misfiring. If i stay under 5k rpm its somewhat fine however as soon as i go over 5krpm the car bogs down and i get a HUGE cloud of smoke out the exhaust. Cat issue? 02 sensor issue? Im lost my car has been down since june of 2016 i want to get it running again

Well since the title has the 2 failures, the P410 I get from time to time I think it has to do with something of the catalyst and that I get out since I made the de-blasting with the, I have a high flow change it for the original And the fault disappeared and then cleaned the other and much better, I think it comes from there is the bug.

And the other the p661 I left the other day, asks him thoroughly and from 7.000rpm makes a mistake sometimes, you step and I know that there is a lot of climbing and suddenly that failure goes and rises to the top and Other times he does not.

I have read a lot here all the people agree that they are the solenoids or the connection, and then I will take a close look, but then no one says exactly where the fault comes from, some help, thank you very much.

2005 Mazda RX8 Issues

I picked up this car 10 months ago with only 33,000 miles. Great ride. 3 weeks ago I got a P0420 code according to my reader. It reset but came back on 4 days later. The car then sat for 4 days in the garage and went to take it out and it was turning over by didn't sound like it was firing. Looking up this issue revealed that an O2 sensor was very possible but saw that one condition was cured by disconnecting a negative terminal and another by changing plugs (plugs were all caked). I read that they had to be replaced every 30 months or 37,000 miles. I now have 51,000. I just changed them and did the terminal. Reset code and it still has the same symptoms except now there's a C1306 and a C2776 code. There seems to be a DSC and a Power Steering symbol that I don't recall seeing before??? P0420 isn't there anymore but might to be running for this to return.
Anyone have any ideas?

Rx8 cranks but won't start after replacing battery

Hey guys I've read around on the forums to see if anyone had a similar problem but no luck :(

Here's the situation: Ive had my manual 2004 Rx8 (108k miles) for 2 months now and everything has been great on it, no check engine lights no problems. The person I bought it from had installed a sound system with amp and subs but when I bought none of the speakers would turn on. I fixed the problem it had with the speakers and it sounded great (no fuse). He told me to disconnect the amp if I won't drive it in over a day bc it'll drain the battery. And that happened 2 weeks ago. I tried to turn it on but the dash lights just sputtered. I bought a new battery and I now it'll just crank and crank but it won't turn over. Ive looked some videos up of flooded engines and It has the symptoms of it being flooded. Could it be flooded? The last time j drove it I drive it for 10 minutes with proper warming up. So I'm doubtful it's flooded. Does anyone know what it could be?

Hey guys, love the site. There's a lot of info but I can't find my problem, maybe there's a thread somewhere but I'd love some help.

Thing is my 2007 rx8 has been having issues after I replaced the radiator, I got a evap code I lose power and shut off after about 30 miles it runs hard when it's heated up. I want find the answer to my problem. Is it just a vac line leak? Or could it be my apex seals? I hoping to keep from having to do to a dealership I don't have that kind of money on hand. Thank you in advance for any advice. And let me know if you've got further questions.

Hey guys,

So compression is shot in my 05 AT and its time for a rebuild/replacement. Id like to pull the engine myself more or less and was hoping there was someone in the Hampton, VA area with some experience who could help me. Im a E3 in the Air Force so i dont have alot but I would be prepared to pay a reasonable price for the assistance. Im mechanically literate but have never pulled an engine or done anything more than basic repairs and maintenance. Any help or advice is very appreciated.

leaking sunroof?

so iv got a issue with water coming into the cab im 100% its water im also 100% its coming from the driver side above my head somewere iv just dumped like 4 bottles of water down the drain holes for the sunroof to recreate this leak and it just flows down the fender exit just fine so its not a cloged hole i howerver only did that to both sides on the front didnt check the rear as its leaking only upfront now my headliner just at the curve were it conects to the plastic cover to the A pillar has water marks on it were you can see it has leaked onto it and iv taken the A pillar cover of during a rain and it is leaking down the pillar into the floor i cant seem to recreate it myself only when it rains can anyone give me any insight to what could be leaking in that general area when it rains id prefure not to have it rain again in my car the other morning i woke up to a nice ice covered floor :/

So I'd say it's a big streetport. Exhaust is maxed out, literally.

*header,catless mid,catback, aem intake
*air pump blocked off.

Motor ran when pulled out. Before the rebuild

Car cranks an will idle 1500 rpms . But once the car drops to the 800 range it stalls. No vacuum leak, But. I don't have my intake valves hooked up yet. Which these aren't used at idle so that shouldn't be the issue. I'm getting random missfire and idle insufficient codes car runs and revs smooth unless rpms go below 1000

I'm guessing the porting needs a higher idle. Do I just need to start off by raising the idle on my mazdaedit, or should I start with maf scaling,

If anyone has some streetport Maps that I could compare to mine would be perfect.
Is 1200 a good starting point for setting the idle ?


I've also heard of hard starts/ idle problems on fresh rebuilds, taking time to seat the Apex seals to unrefinished housings. Is this true ?

Nav Cover on Dash

Just wanted to share something pretty cool... I bought my car with a cracked nav cover. After searching forever, I went down a path of a 3d printed design. This was a very complex shape and it took multiple iterations to model off a cracked cover but we got close! The way the 3d printer printed it, it put conical shapes in the cover and I like it. We also added a rotor, because why not! I needed to sand down a couple areas to get a good fit then I airbrushed it a satin black to come close to the dash color. Its held in place with black silicon. Anyway, here it is!

Building an RX-8 out of two broken ones

Hello gentlemen,

Where I am from, there is no such thing as a good second-hand RX-8. So the only way to get a good one is to build it yourself. For reference, both cars are left-hand drive.

Bought a non-runner for 1500euros(Car1). Build date is 2003. Hasn't run in over 2 years. Description:
-Needs brake calipers and disks
-Rust (nothing too serious) underneath the chassis
-Needs engine mounts, left and right
-Engine is leaking oil
-Blown radiator
-Blown front airbags (driver and passenger)
-Engine will only start when towed
-Engine compression test reveals Rotor1 at 450kPa and Rotor2 at 0kPa (blown to bits)
-Has only 1 key with no buttons or anything but immobilizer recognizes it or it was bypassed

Other than the above, everything else on the car is fully working. Odometer reads 122,000 Km and it ran for 1.3Km after being towed.


I found another one for 1000euros (Car2). Build date is 2004. Hasn't run since July 2016. Description:

-Dented AEZ 19' rims on the left side (will not be taking those)
-Front-left fender and driver door are dented inwards in a "C" shape. Owner was drifting, skid and hit a pole on his side (explains the dented rims)
-Body and chassis bent in an inward "C" shape around the driver-side door
-Left side airbags deployed. Front airbags have not deployed
-Engine rebuilt in June 2016. Induction kit replaced with what the owner claims to be an NGK induction kit but from what I found on the web, it's just the original Mazda one. Is this correct?
-Engine starts instantly, whether cold or warm. Even more so, stopping and starting the engine cold or warm, without revving it works also. Can only mean good compression and a healthy. Engine idles at around 800rpm (OBD II info). No jerks or misfires or self-revving issues
-Clutch recently replaced
-Blown radiator (because of the crash)
-Adjustable suspension
-2 sets of keys with remote

Both care are the 171kW / 230 HP models. My question is :

Can I just drop the transmission and engine from Car 2 into Car1 with minor adjustments?

What do I need to move from Car2 to Car1 for it to work, besides:

-Engine
-Transmission
-ECU ?
-Induction kit
-Suspension
-Brake discs and calipers
-Front airbags
-New radiator

What can I do to keep the engine cool with a minimum budget. I thought about removing the thermostat and leaving it circulating all the time and also mounting a fan relay so the fans start at 75degrees Celsius.

Please let me know if I'm on the right track and what else needs doing.

TSC/ABS lights on. Cruise control not working.

After I changed my oil and transmission oil, my TSC and ABS lights came on in my dash. My DSC button doesn't do anything and the DSC light does not come on or off anymore. I can turn my "Cruise Main" on and off but I can't set cruise. Before I did the oil change, my CEL was on for code P0420. I moved my front and rear o2 sensor wires around in case it was just a loose connection. I am guessing this is what did it but I am not sure. My CEL is off for now but I have a feeling it will come back on after a couple days. As for the TSC and ABS light, I read somewhere that it may be due to the fact that I have led bulbs all around my rear end (brake,reverse,signals). But I have had all these led bulbs for about a year now and there were no issues until I changed my oils. Past times I changed my oil, everything was fine. I also noticed that if my car is on, my brake lights are very dimly lit even though all the lights are off. This has not been an issue until after I changed my oils as well. Could it just be a wire or something else?

Drove an rex 8 for the first time

Drove an rx8 at a dealership today was thinking about buying it but when I asked about a rotary specific compression test the salesman looked puzzled. The RX 8 was nice and drove beautifully, pulled great , but without any likelihood of getting a test done I wasn't going to buy it. It was a white 05 standard with 102000 miles on it. Guess I'll keep looking I don't wanna settle.

New 04' Rx8 with only 10k threw a CEL already

Just figured I'd write about this / vent my experience today. Bought a rather brand new 04' Rx-8 GT recently with only 10,500 original miles. Awesome, only 10k, but when you do the math, you will figure out there has been a lot of sitting. I don't let it bother me too much, since I got it about a month ago I've changed all the fluids - oil, tranny, rear riff, etc., new tires, new K&N filter, and it's been driving excellent. The car has been pulling strong, starting hot with no issues, I've been happy.

Today I decided to get on it a bit with this douche in an Audi who would cut me off everything I went to pass someone else. Was rather neck to neck until I hit redline, and started to pull a bit. Once we got to the top of the hill at the end of the road, I noticed the smell of stinky catalytic converter, which I initially thought was his car from being redlined. Then I looked at my dash, and saw the blinking CEL.

Long story short, I got scared, pulled over, CEL went away, but the car smelled terrible (misfire likely caused fuel to be dumped in and through the exhaust / cat). Restarted car, no CEL, but the idle fluctuated then evened. Drove back to work, and got on it on a sideroad. No issues unless I went WOT to redline, then I felt the fuel-cut-like misfire at 6-7k rpm. Still no CEL light.

Went back to work (thankfully at a dealership) and grabbed the scanner. Threw one code, being the p0302 (cylinder 2 misfire). Asking around and did some research, and concluded it was one of 3 things - plugs, coils, wires. Started with the cheapest option being plugs, and thankfully it was not only quite easy to do, but also solved my problem.

Immediately the car started better. I still get some minor vibrations at idle, but I beat on it pretty thoroughly and noticed no issues, just linear power throughout. So amazingly, even though the car has only 10-11k miles, the plugs were totally shot (picture as reference). In time I will also upgrade the coils and wires.

Now my next issue is the white foamy **** I see on the dipstick every other time I pull it out...from what I heard this is semi-normal and I should give it a good long thorough drive to heat the condensation out of the oil (oil was changed recently).

Also threw in a pic of my car. Only things done beside basic maintaince were the Niche Misano wheels, 18x8 et 40 all around. Getting coilovers for Xmas, then plan on just doing drilled / slotted brakes all around, some spacers in the rear, and just keeping it clean and running :0

So I went to check my oil level and there is no dipstick..... I have gone probably 2000 miles since the last oil change how do I know if I need to add oil? Also suggestions on what kind of oil.

I had to have my beloved 2006 Rx8 towed to the dealer today. I have had it stored in my garage for last month. Started and ran fine last Thurs. I went to start it last night to move to my winter storage garage. I got in car and lights and all were normal. When I turned ignition I heard one very short starter noise then all went dark. After that I could not turn keyless ignition and had no interior lights but the headlights go on and are bright. When I manually insert Key and turn to ACC position the dash lights go on but still no interior lights or power windows or radio, etc. when I try to start I hear nothing at all - no click, no grind, no crank.

We tried to jump start - no change.

Any ideas?

Rebuilt motor wont start

I just finished rebuilding my engine but I can't get it to start. If anyone has any suggestions I would Love to try it. It has spark and fuel. The compression is at 60 psi according to a rental compression tester from auto zone. I worked on it for a few days but couldnt get it to start. The compression went up to 70 after a few days of messing with it. I put different coils in and tested the spark. They all spark really well from the coil but the trailing plugs are weak through the wire. I might try to replace those if it could be the problem. I just put new plugs in it and it still didnt fix the problem. It cranks but wont actually start.

2004 RX8 Auto Dies In Reverse or Drive

I have a 2004 RX8 automatic with 78k miles. The car sat for about a year or a year and a half. Everything looks good on the car so I bought it knowing that the engine is not turning over. Got the car towed home and got it running after deflooding the engine for about an hour. Got a new battery since the old one was from 2012 and I blew it by overcharging it at work lol.

I can get the car to start up. Every time the engine is warmed up or when the coolant gauge reaches near the middle, the car dies when I place it in reverse or drive. It is fine in Park, but that's when I'm not switching from Drive or Reverse to Park. Not sure about Neutral. If I don't let the car warm up and place it in Reverse or Drive, it is fine. I can even leave it in Drive until the car warms up and it will still not die, unless I switch it out of Drive. Scanned for DTC and could not find any codes.

Is this a fuel pump issue? Torque converter? I don't want to pull the engine out yet unless I know it's time to rebuild it, which I should anyways since it's high miles.


I have not changed the spark plugs, coils, or spark plug wires. Also did not change or add new gas, coolant and engine oil yet. However, I did remove the coils and checked beneath for white spots which I did not see on any of them. Also pulled out the spark plugs and cleaned them. Was going to replace them, but they are like $20 each. Transmission fluid looks good; checked it when the car is hot.

Just trying to see if anyone have dealt with this issue before I put more money into the car.

KW Variant 3: replace rear springs with linears?

I called KW and they were perfectly willing to give me data on the front springs (61mm ID, 200 mm length, 80N/mm) but are very cagey about the rears. They told me that the ID is 61mm but couldn't give me the length or any data on the spring rate curve. I pressed the guy a bit about whether it was more of a dual-rate or smooth curve and he threw me a bone and said it was more of a curve.

I'm searching around for somebody nearby with a spring tester so I can figure out a starting point for the new spring rate.

In the mean time: Has anybody tried this yet?

Hey guys - it's been a while since I've posted here, although I read regularly.. Unfortunately the reason I'm here is because after 3 years of ownership I had my first mild heart attack when I got a CEL this weekend. My car is at 135,000km and while driving home from work Friday it showed up.

I scanned the code and it was p2070 intake manifold valve stuck open. I kept it off the road for a couple days while I researched what that meant. I now know more about what the ssv is and how much carbon can build up on it, the cleaning procedures, etc...The code has gone away after about 25km of driving but I have some questions.

The day this happened was probably about -15c, I can imagine this might contribute to a dirty ssv being stuck. It seemed to clear after some driving in around 0c temps. Does that make sense?

Despite the code going away I imagine the ssv is probably dirty anyways. I was preparing myself for a ssv cleaning but it would be difficult to perform in this weather. I could likely do it come spring, but would it make sense to try something like a seafoam in the meantime to help? Or should I really try to get the ssv cleaned asap? I'm not really sure of the effect of a dirty ssv other than rough idle and loss of power, both of which i did not experience.

To add to this I also have seen a coolant light on my dash but it quickly goes away about 10 seconds after starting the car. I also think that my driver side seat heater has stopped working. My 8 needs some tlc..

Just thought I'd get some thoughts on the situation, thanks!

RX8 wont start

Hello, I am considering buying a non running RX8, from the pictures it seems to be in good condition so I am wondering if anyone has any idea about what the issue is, at the moment I am assuming the car is turning over and is not seized. The pictures of the car have a garage sign in the background but with the description of the add it sounds like the garage has been throwing parts at it hoping to hit the problem area and the guy has ran out of money to spend on it.

If someone could give me some idea as to what the issue(s) could be before I consider buying it I would appreciate it, with the condition of the car I would offer the guy 500£ and if I couldn't get it going I would just break the car for parts to make my money back so I don't mind either way.

Building SCCA T4 car for client. OMP issue?

New member here. Joined just to ask this question as I myself don't actually own an RX8. I have a shop and am building an SCCA T4 car for a client. It's an '11 Series II car.

First, some background about me... I've been building and working on cars for over 25 years. I mostly specialize in Nissan and GM products. This is the second RX8 I'm building. I know quite a bit about engines in general, but am a total noob when it comes to rotaries. I'm ASE and Nissan SCOPE certified.

Second, some background about the car... It came to me from another shop. It's having an issue with dumping massive amounts of oil into the engine and the other shop couldn't figure it out. They changed the engine twice, thinking there was an internal engine problem. When I got the car, the engine was mostly removed. The car was a salvaged flood car.

First thing I did when I got the car was to drop the entire drivetrain out the bottom to do a full inspection. Other than the engine issues, I didn't find anything major wrong with the car. I installed a salvage yard engine that was sent with the car. Everything on the engine is stock, down to the OEM air filter because it's a T4 class car. When I started it, it started having the same issue, dumping very black oil out the exhaust manifold. The engine has brand new oil in it, so the oil must be getting dumped in to the rotor housings and partially burned. That's why it comes out black. Also, the brand new plugs are oil fouled.

This is a different engine than was in it when I got it. The oil metering system came with this engine, so it's not a mechanical issue with the metering system as none of the components that were in it when I got it are still there.

So, here's my question... Could a harness or PCM fault cause the metering system to be commanded to dump way too much oil or stick wide open? I'm about ready to make a bypass hose to bypass the oil metering system completely to run the engine and hopefully get all of the oil out of it. Since this is a T4 class car though, I can't leave it bypassed. There are also several low circuit voltage codes stored for several systems. I'm thinking about swapping out the PCM.

I'd really appreciate any help from the resident engine gurus here.

After I'll-health put my 13B REW project on hold (engine in, fuel system done, lots of work on the rest), a Greddy turbo RX8 came my way at a price that I couldn't really refuse. The conversion was done professionally 20,000 miles ago and the engine was rebuilt by a highly-respected rotary specialist and ECU changed 9000 miles ago.

She has been resprayed in white and has a carbon fibre bonnet and trunk. White is rare in the U.K., limited to less than 500 40th anniversarys and R3s.

Alas, the compressions are rear 5.3 and front 6.2 normalised, so my general plan is to run her until the engine goes bang then convert her to 13B REW, in the hope that by then I'll be fit to do it. I'm getting the current project car stripped and all the bits stored.

Low MPG after water Decarb

Hey guys, so i water decarbed my 8. Placebo or not. Idle got smoother. Acceleration is smoother but the downside is. I am getting poor mileage now. My tank fill after decarb gave me 180km on a full tank. Previously i could do 300 within city.
Any ideas what could be causing it ?
Btw i mixed some 2t oil in water while doing it. The system running lean Cel came on. I cleared it and never came back.
Is it possible i recalibrated any sensor and now my cars running rich ?

For sale are four Falken Ziex 950 A/S High Performance All Season Tires. The size is 225/40 19 and are take-offs from my 2009 Mazda RX-8 R3. I removed these tires from a car I just purchased to put on Max Performance Summer Tires as I only drive the car in nice weather. The prior owner had them on for very little time. The dates are 3615 or the thirtysixth week of 2015. The tires have +/- 8/32 tread depth. New tread depth is spec'd at 10/32, so these tires have very little use. They look nearly new.

Only $250 for the set.

I bought my 05 with Hawk HP+ already installed. I have the same pads on my Miatas and like them and found they squeal just a bit now and then. Unlike the Miatas, the RX squealed constantly and obnoxiously loudly. I felt like every time I cruised up to a light in my quiet neighborhood, my car was screaming "Hey everybody, look at the idiot who's driving me!"

I didn't do anything special, just followed the standard advice, but it has worked so far, now they squeal even less than the Miatas, just barely maybe once every 10 stops.

The rotors were really scored, so I had them resurfaced. Cost only $10 each at a machine shop, so shop around because I was quoted as much as $25 each at an auto parts store.

I checked to make sure the calipers were lubed properly, which they were.

The pads had no shims. I don't know if the pads came without them, or if the previous owner chose to go without them, but nonetheless I put some of that pinkish - orange stuff from CRC on them.

I also noticed the the clips for the front calipers were installed randomly. I had to go online and find a diagram to show me where they went, but I reinstalled those properly. It's an easy mistake to make, but it seems like it would affect performance, or at least noise if they aren't installed right.

BTW, the pads themselves looked nearly new, so I didn't change those.

I also followed Hawks bedding instructions carefully, though I did gradually increase the speeds to higher than they recommended. Seems to have worked out fine.

So that's it. Very simple and inexpensive job that made a big difference. Funny thing is that it doesn't really stop better, even with the scored rotors it would stop like it hit a brick wall, and it still does. :D

I have an 04 rx8 and im getting 9.19mpg. I beat the car a little but still seems to just drink gas. My gf got better mileage in her Hummer

SAN ANTONIO Anyone ever see a R3 in a junk yard around here?

I hope to find an R3 in a junkyard as I would like to scavenge its suspension components to replace and fix my busted up suspension components. If you have seen any or know of some good condition low mileage rx8 front strut assemblies, even non R3 I would be interested.

What mileage did you replace your suspension bushings with, and what brand did you replace them with?

Is anyone running a set of those? I installed a set and I'm getting some bad clunk when going over speed bumps.

Not sure if it's a symptom of them being inexpensive coil overs or if I screwed up the install somehow.

Franken Suspension?

I have a problem with my front right strut/spring when I go over a pothole it makes an awful noise. I was hoping I could replace both my front strut/spring assembly's with used low mileage ones that someone took off their car when upgrading. What years will bolt on? I see that 04-11 should all fit but than some people say series 2 rears are different? Would series 2 or series 3 front strut/spring assemblies bolt right up? I dont own a spring compressor and would rather just order a low mileage set off someone and bolt it right on. Otherwise ill get that money draining bug and buy the bilsteins (damnit ive already been eyeing them) and ill have to try to find New oem style springs and I feel like that will break my bank.

iv had my rx8 for about a year and a half almost now and loving it but im wanting a little more power from it its bone stock at the moment iv been thinking about a turbo but wanted to stop by here first can anyone tell me what all would i need to end up with 300 at the wheels with a turbo install and how reliable the 8 really becomes with a turbo on it iv read alot of different posts were some say they wont last very long at all and other saying it can last almost as long as a normal stock 8. also this would be for a daily driver as well as every now and then a few giggles with friends nothing major thanks in advance for any help

Starter problem

Hey guys got a question! My starter was running a little slow so pulled it out ,cleaned it all out, lubed it up a little, reassembled and put it back in. When i started it the the car the starter worked better than ever. But once the car is warm the starter wont crank at all until it cools. The solenoid still engages just wont crank. I've been reading up on heat soak, but i can't understand why it wasn't doing it before. Any ideas?

Thing is .......... I think it grossly underestimates the EGR present in an REW engine .I don't think they can be considering the gas that will turn around over the apex as it passes the port.
My reading suggests that up to 40% EGR can be tolerated in a piston engine .
Only 10% in the Renesis seems like way too little .
I think there is an opportunity to get some free efficiency .

Anyone else looked at it ?

Hi,

Just had the RX8 detailed for $80 clay bar and waxed...figured id do this every 8 months or so to protect the paint...

But i heard theres a company called XPel that provides full film body coverage for cars...

1. Is it good?
2. How much does it usually cost for an install?

Crack in rear passenger door

Someone left me this nice present for Christmas:

That's not a scratch. It's an 8" long crack in the door (plus a couple paint scratches down below where the gifter's car door presumably hit mine).

I don't know anything about body work. Do I need to protect that against rust somehow? If I want it fixed, is my only option to replace the door?
