Whats the best exhaust?

I saw the sticky, but most of the links on that thread were dead, an I kinda need some suggestions from people who actually own the exhaust or heard it.



I currently have a catback borla exhaust on my rx8, yeah its cool, but its not really that loud or 'cool' sounding if you will.



I want an exhaust that sounds nice and throaty, deep sounding, and well... loud basically.



I can't go catless or anything because inspection where I live is strict and all that.



So, what exhaust should I get, and can you link me to it?

Replace rear crankshaft seal?

hi guys, im spotting an oil leak at my rear car, sent it to the dealer, they quoted a change in the rear crankshaft oil seal, apparently it the part cost like $50bucks, but the labor they are charging me is roughly $400bucks?



Question is: is that the norm? is that a relatively tough task to repair the crankshaft seal? I am no mechanic, so doing it myself is not a question



Appreciate any advise.

It'll be great it anyone can point me to a diagram of the replacement, at least i can get a visual?

Stalling when thrown in neutal

First off, I've been a 2 year lurker, never once posted, I've used these forums to fix a multitude of things on my 8 (fuel pump replacement, coils, plugs, starter, SSV cleaning, etc) but I've exhausted all my efforts at this point



Stats:

-04 greddy turbo with 102k miles, and an accessport.

Currently running 6lbs of boost.

-Just had the engine rebuilt 1k miles ago by speed1 in Allentown (with Goopy apex seals)

-coils replaced 2k miles ago, fuel pump 3k miles ago, starter 3k miles ago.

-BHR ignition kit, but not yet installed



My problem has been discussed before on a few threads, but nobody seems to come to a definite conclusion on any of them.



Problem:

Whenever I throw my car into neutral going about 45+mph, the engine doesnt even try to recover, it just dies. At lower speeds, it comes close to stalling, but catches itself before it does. It idles fine when it's just sitting, it accelerates fine, drives fine, but it always stalls when I put it into neutral at highway speeds.



Guesses:

A few guesses include, but arent limited to:

-MAF (i cleaned it multiple times, but maybe it's just old and broken)

-one of the vacuum solenoids (replaced SSV solenoid yesterday, so wouldn't be that one)

-something to do with the upstream o2 sensor maybe? (I usually only get 15mpg highway, which is pretty terrible)

-could it be the battery? (mine is somewhat old, but has a consisted 14v charge)

-not likely, but I have a remote starter (clutch doesn't need to be depressed to start car) and the clutch switch is disconnected

-I have no VFAD. The nipple behind the throttle body is capped





I replaced the ESS sensor, cleaned the SSV, checked for vacuum leaks, and replaced the neutral safety switch. I'm running out of options, and any help would be appreciated

Regular brake lights not working?

I pulled out my taillights the other day to do some tinting on them (that I think came out really well, been getting a few compliments on them) and last night I noticed that my big brake lights in the housing aren't lighting up. I took the trunk lining apart so I could get to the bulbs. I took the bulbs out and one filament is in a tightly wound straight line like it's supposed to be but the other has a sort of odd curve in it but it's not disconnected from the two towers, just oddly bent. The other bulb is the same way but with a different looking curve in it. I took the bulbs out then put them back in to make sure they were grounded tightly, I did the same with the wiring connector that they sit in (unplugged it then replugged it.) Are the filaments just busted? The bulb is clear and doesn't look burned out or anything and the filament isn't broken either. If it is busted then I've never seen a bulb break like this... Limping... Again.

Hey guys,



8 is limping again. I've searched around on the forum a bit before posting as you should. I've pulled the OMP/MOP whatever connectors, dried them out, dielectric grease, ECU resets, etc. It worked for 3 start ups about 30km or so then limped again. Ran the OBD2 and got the same codes as the guy who pulled the connectors, etc and he and multiple others said it permanently fixed it and got rid of the CEL. I've got a Lincoln memorial as well but don't think that'd affect it. Haven't switched in the new bottle yet but I've got one in the garage. Any suggestions?

New engine or rebuild in Dallas

Bought a 2004 w/128K mi. for my daughter last Summer. No idea if engine has been replaced. All along has been sometimes difficult to start when warm. Now idles rough and sometimes stalls. Dealer says back rotor compression is eight point something whatever-units, but front is five point something while normal should be 6.8 and that I need a new engine. They don't rebuild them and wants $6K for new installed. Is there anybody in/around Dallas that can rebuild existing or install new engine for much less than $6K?

coolant problems

I just bought my rx8 a year and a half ago. I have had to add oil once a month for 6 months and coolant every 2 to 3 days. I took it in to a mechanic because about 3 weeks ago it stopped and shut off while driving it. Knowing this is not good for Any vehicle I took it in. They first told me I had a coolant leak from the radiator. Upon closer inspection they told me that coolant was getting into the oil and that the oil looked like chunky chocolate milk and that I would either need a new head gasket or a full rebuild. Upon researching this problem I found that rx8's do not have head gaskets. ( so I have read). What is wrong with my baby? A PROFESSIONAL response Please.

2005 RX8 engine rebuild

My name is Gary C. and I restore old cars and motorcycles for a gentleman's personal collection here in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This week the gentleman I work for purchased a 2005 Mazda RX8. This car isn't for his collection, he just likes the RX8 and wanted one to run around town with. When I do a restoration project I usually join a forum based on that particular car or motorcycle. It has always been a priceless help obtaining info from those who know their stuff, in this case the RX8.

The RX8 we bought this week has a bad engine. The rear chamber has no compression. When I pulled the trailing spark plug on the rear set I also discovered bits of thin hard metal that I assume is part of one of the apex seals. It has to come apart.

So if any of you engine experts ever read any of the Newbe threads I will be asking a few questions during this build and would appreciate your input. As far as my abilities, I was a motorcycle technician for over 30 years and have been doing this restoration gig for the last 5 years. I have never worked on a rotary except for one time I did a quick make run job on a Suzuki RE5. I cleaned the carb. slapped it on the butt and away it went.

The car I am posting about is a 2005 RX8 with a normally aspirated 4 port engine with an automatic transmission. It is showing 145,000.0 miles.

I see that this site limits me to 30 days before I can go on to the regular forum. In 30 days I will be done with this project and will be surfing some other forum for info. Thanks in advance for any input.

Longevity Of Engine Components

My car has 104k. Assume normal wear and tear up to this point [ No catastrophic failures]. All seals will be replaced with brand new parts and the engine will be rebuilt. With that in mind, how many miles, on average, can I expect to get out of the rotors and housings at this point? Assume regular maintenance will be performed.

RX8 - Suitable for a Student?

Hello, this is my first time posting on this forum, or any other forum for that matter.



I have been looking into purchasing a new car, something with a little more power than my current Mazda 3 Sport. I have come across the Mazda RX8, researched a little into the basic mechanics of the rotary engine that it uses but I am a little scared by some of the statistics and the comments some people have made about these cars, thus I need an expert opinion.





First thing is first. I am a student, I can afford the car, I have been looking at the 231 engine. The insurance is a little steep but I can just about cover it.



The statistics say that the MPG will be around 17-20. But I have also heard reports of people only getting 13-15 MPG. Is it possible to get above the 20MPG mark, altering driving style, treating the engine right ect.





Basically, what I want to know is EVERYTHING. Best way to treat the engine, how to get best MPG, although ill only be driving 6-10 miles a day. What type of oil to use to prevent the apex seal breaking down. What to look for when buying the car and all the rest.



Im sorry if this has been posted before, which im sure it has. Any help is greatly appreciated.

CEL P2004 APV problems

I have had this on-going issue with this CEL. Yesterday I decided to make sure I didn't have a broken wire going to the APV motor to the computer. All 5 wires checked with continuity. But, as soon as I clear the codes the second time I crank the car the light comes back on. I have even bought another motor for the APV and that didn't help either. I have tested the APV motor via 12v and spins fine and the little white gear spins very easily and freely. But, I heard the APV cycles when you turn the key? If this is true mine doesn't do that.



Any help and suggestions?

Was driving and my center dash LED died, engine switched off, will no longer start.



No power to radio, clock in the center console, or OBD2 gauges.



Power to the stock gauge cluster, door lights, headlights, dome light, key switch red LED light. I can open the trunk and lock the doors with the remote.

does anyone think this can be fixed?

So i got a junkyard bumper assembly for my rx8 i saved from being scraped and the cover came from a rx8 that had an engine fire and the driver side upper fender mount is melted. does anyone know how much it would be to fix if possible? (When i bought the bumper assembly he threw in the cover for free color matchs my car just seeing if its worth fixing if its even all that important will post pictures)

{ FS } '07 GT 6spd. 22k mi. Super Clean

My 2007 GT needs a new home, as she doesn't see the open road enough. I am going to aggressively list it around mid-April, but thought I'd toss it up here first to see if there was any interest from the community. I am waiting to list it because I won't be available the first couple weeks in April, and also because the car is currently in winter storage. The roads are still to messy to bring it out.



I bought the car in 2/12 from the original owner, it had 18k miles. It now has 22k miles, so as you see, I don't drive it. I spend more time detailing it than driving it. If you search my threads/posts you will see quite a bit of info on the car.



Good compression numbers, full, and I mean full documentation since new. Always dealer serviced. I put brand new 245-40 GoodYear Assymetric-2 tires on it last fall before I put it away. They have maybe 50 miles. Always garaged, covered and connected to a Battery Tender. Bone stock except for window tint.



It's blk/blk leather, all options except nav. I have brand new coils, plugs, wires, and Red Line tranny and diff fluids that will go with the car. It doesn't need any of that yet, but I intended on doing everything at around 25k miles so I bought everything just to be ready.



This is one of 5 cars that I currently own, and it's only my wife and I, and she doesn't like to drive manual, so the RX8 has to go.



There's a very nice low-mile '04 on here for $11,500, and there's a nice '09 R3 on here for $15,500, so I am going to ask $13,500 for my car.

Wanting to get my RX-8 painted

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums (obviously) and I was wanting to get a rough estimate or what you guys would believe to be a good price on a paint job. I managed to find an exact example of the paint job I wanted ( http://ift.tt/1HclU7f ) and was just wanting to ask a couple questions (if they're answerable)



1) Is the paint job in the pic metallic or solid?



2) What would be an acceptable price range to get the car painted such as in the pic (orange with black roof)? Interior and exterior. The original paint job is solid black.



3) How many coats of clear should I get?



4) How badly would it effect the painting if I had a carbon fiber trunk spoiler? (Not that I wanted it painted I was just wondering if that would come in to account for more labor)

Just upgraded to the BHR ignition kit -- any reason to keep the stock parts?

I'd noticed some sluggishness off the line for the past year or so, and I was starting to hear crackling in the radio when driving through parking garages, so I knew my ignition system was on its way out. After 48,000miles, I can't complain too much, or so I'm told. So I priced my replacement options, and I determined the BHR ignition kit would be $75 more than replacement OE parts. For such a small price difference, I decided to go with the BHR kit. It was a pain in the *** to get it to fit, but it did fit, and now my engine is back to feeling healthy again.



So...since the stock coils and wires had 48kmi on them and were starting to show signs of failure, and since I would have to completely remove the BHR kit if I needed to swap-out one of the coils anyway, is there any reason to keep the stock parts or should I just toss them in the dumpster at my local repair shop?

driver side switch

I just recently bought a 2005 RX 8, and so far I love it. This might be a dumb question, but on the driver's side, below the air vent, there are 3 switches. On the left is the instrument panel light dimmer, and in the center is the traction control switch. On the right is a third switch, unmarked, with a small white button in the middle. What is its function? Thanks

Question? I have to replace my ECU and I've received conflicting opinions about purchasing one. What must match between my old and new ECU? Mine is N3H4 18 881G. Would I need to purchase the same exact coding for my 2004 rx8?

Got a freshly rebuilt 05 rx8 6 speed manual for sale, base model w/o sunroof or traction control. Window tint, front/rear polished rotor accents for the lower bumpers. 146k miles on chassis. 50 miles on a rebuilt engine, OEM mazda apex seals and new main bearings. Drives excellent, shifts well.



Brand new front brake rotors and pads. Replacement motor mounts and catalytic converter. New spark plugs, recent NGK wires. It also appears to have recent replacement radiator and primary cooling fan, and upgraded "fast" starter. Tires about half tread.



Minor body and paint issues appropriate to a 10 year old car. Someone has clearcoated the headlights at some point previously, and it is now peeling off, so they need to be sanded down and polished or re-clearcoated to shine again. TPMS light flashes after about 10 minutes indicating a bad sensor (I have no way to know which one, but I have a spare set of used TPMS sensors I'll give away with the car).
