Can anyone recommend me a decent body shop in Ottawa that can help install after market exterior parts? I am having a hard time finding one. Thanks.
GM Power Steering Recall Linked to 13 Deaths - Any in the RX8?
Long time RX-8 Driver and my power steering suddenly has gone out at least two separate instances. Was able to drive home and had them each fixed by an independent Mazda mechanic linked to harness issues. Just caught this Yahoo article about how the GM recall killed mostly young inexperienced drivers who happen to be women, who are not as physically strong.
I thought myself that my wife who sometimes drives my 6MT car would have an difficult time maneuvering if the power steering ever went out. I know it's a numbers game as GM sells many more cars than volume of RX8's but are there any other Mazda's with this issue or have there been any deaths with RX8's because of this? Just an idea... maybe something to think about because I'm pretty sure this is a known issue especially on this board.

Rattling sound around 6-6.5k RPMs under WOT
Hi guys!
I've noticed since I got my 8 when I punch it to get to redline (gotta flush that carbon out) around the 6-6.5k RPMs there is like a tin-like rattling sound but it goes away after passing that range.
Any ideas? I've done some searching on here and some threads mentioned it was a normal noise and/or it was a catalytic issue? I'm pretty sure my cat is going to crap very soon.
Help is appreciated :)

Some Q's About Putting Together Full Exhaust
So I've had my baby for most of my college life and now with roughly a semester left, I FINALLY have time and money to do a few mods. My car is an auto, so I'd like to make a grand tourer in the sense, rather than go the autoX monster route. Brakes are fully upgraded, so on to exhaust.
After much research, I'm looking at Garage Line headers, Race Roots catted midpipe and Racing Beat S2 specific single tip CBE. Hopefully I won't throw a CEL. Questions...
1. Are there any known issues with quality/fitment with any or all of these parts? I searched, but found nothing.
2. Do I need a header heat shield or not? Can the OEM be reused, or what other options exist? I couldn't find anything beyond ceramic coating and heat wrap.
3. Can anything be done about how warm the center console gets after driving a while?
Thanks!

UK rates the 8 to tow (don't judge me)
And the 6MT can supposedly tow a whopping 1500+ pounds. I think I'll start looking for a hitch to pull my motorcycle home this summer. Check it out and decide for yourselves.

Exterior rear view mirror
My driver side mirror is messed up. the triangular portion that attaches to the car is warped, like it was heated up and changed shape. so i need to replace that piece, so my plan is to buy one off ebay and move my actual mirror assembly over. everyone i have found is roughly $40 for one assembly (i only need one).
So I am debating on going stock or for nearly the same price getting 2 new aftermarket mirrors. There are 2 options i like, both that have a built in turn signals, which i like.
But i am not sure how they look, so im wondering what if any one has them, or can photoshop it. im also concerned with the fitment, but i figured since its a simple geometric shape it shouldnt be an issue.

Exhaust vibration
I was wondering if any one has had a vibration going through the car from the exhaust having made contact with the body were it shouldn't .
I ask the question because during the night I run over a badger there was no visible sign of damage but when I continued then the vibration started .
The next day I looked under the car but just couldn't tell we're the exhaust might be touching .
So anyone have any possible ideas

Used car values
A friend just lost her car to a pothole. Insurance declared it totaled, and she's got collsion coverage.
An agent told her to look up its value at NADA's web site, so she'd go into the negotiations prepared. I've suggested that she also look at kbb.com. Are there other sites that she can check for favorable value?
I'm also digging out Doc Beech's great post on how to maximize a settlement.
Thanks
Ken

newbie!
Im new to this rx8 stuff. My now wife bought an 04 when we were still dating. We were given all crazy wrong info when we bought it and even mazda didn't seem to know anything about these cars. We had some work done at one place that claimed to know them and turned out to be a waste of money. Found out the compression was bad at 60k miles. We debated a ls2 swap and then realized it was gonna be close to 20k to have it done. We eventually found Banzai-Racing and since we live in northern indiana we were excited to see how close they are to us! Chris is in the process of rebuilding it now. Its an auto with the winning blue color. Rims and borla exhaust is all that is done ao far. Not sure what there really is to do to an auto but it still is fun to drive.
Ventilation making groaning, moaning sound

Best Track Build Platform
Noticing a lot of track builds popping up lately, call it envy or impatience but I have been thinking about a year or two down the road what route I would want to go in regards to a track car wether I want one or not. Comparing platforms and benefits etc... and have not seen a platform that I am completely satisfied with (although I am heavily Rx8 biased, I realize it is not necessarily the best)
So what's the general census from both the new and the experienced.

{FS/WTT} S1 Rx8 Manual Transmission
I have for sale a manual transmission out of an S1 body style rx8. The vehicle had 50k and was running and driving fine until a fuel leak at the tank caught the car on fire. I was planning on using this in my rx7 but plans changed. What you see is what you get, I can engage all of the gears, it includes the fork/throw out bearing/fork boot and shifter pedestal (not shown in photos). Output shaft seal will need to be replaced, it looks like it was damaged upon removal. It shifts fine, no 2nd gear syncro issues.
I am asking $500 but I am also willing to trade for a used set of matching 225/45/18 tires plus cash or if you want to take me on a date to belle tire (or wherever tire shop) and buy me a set of new 18" tires its yours.

keyless entry remote and key replacement
I have just bought an rx8 this week and I am working my way thorough a few teething issues as I get to know the vehicle and this forum has already been very useful - thanks.
I have read many threads but I am looking for advice from someone who as actually solved this problem
I have one cc type remote with its key.
I want to create a spare(s).
I know I can not use the two key system to code a new ignition key.
However can I code a new credit card style remote? There seems nobody can confirm success with this ( other than via the dealership )
If not can I code a three button style fob remote to access the vehicle?
Has anybody used a reader to access codes relating to the key?
Where on the car are the transponder type listed - the seems to be nothing on the key or remote that I can see?
:dunno:
Thanks for any replies.

Flashing CEL
dimanche 30 mars 2014
So I got the flashing CEL today after starting my car.. It could have been on from my drive home the night before but no later. I'm assuming this is from a misfire from what I've read and because I got a multiple random misfire code a few months ago. This is most likely because of the previous owner, while I bought the car at 1.7k miles I've read even driving at low rpm for a couple weeks can foul plugs and other parts to cause a misfire. The previous owner was a much older man and probably did not know what he was buying (hence selling at 1700 miles) just speculation. My question is is it safe to drive to the dealership about 20 miles away? And what else could the flashing cel mean. Only thing I noticed was a rougher idle.. The second time I started it up the idle was really shaky.

Rx8 CEL P2009 Help
Hey guys!
The check engine light just came on yesterday, after hooking it up to a OBD reader i managed to scan the code P2009 - intake manifold runner control circuit low bank 1.
After a bit of reading on the forum i know this issue regards the APV in one way or another. Problem is i am having a hard time locating the APV motor and the connector to it. The plan is no clean the connection to the APV and hope its works, because i dont know how easy it is replacing the APV motor?
Any help or pictures is very much appriciated!

Trans/clutch prob?
I just recently bought a 05 rx8 manual. It run excellent but I have one issue. the shifting are great but when sometime I put in reverse, it grinds. I don't know if it a small problem that can easily be fixed or does it need to be changed and become expensive. The reverse stills grabs but at time it doesn't. So is this a big issue that need to be fix right away or is it small?

{ FS } Mazdaspeed Dual Can Catback Exhaust
$550, local pickup only. I am in Temecula, CA.
I have been reading this site for a long time (9/06 reg date), but I haven't really posted anything. I have a 2007 PBM RX-8 Touring that I bought new in July 2007. Here's a picture of the MS exhaust on the car:
The catback was on the car for about 50,000 miles, and it's the only modification that was done. Fit is perfect, and there are no leaks. The welds on the canisters were redone about a year ago.
I was pulled over once by CHP and asked about my exhaust (speed trap right at a tunnel, oops) - he dropped it after I told him it was a factory option. It's nice to have "Mazda" on the tips to back that up :)
It's light, looks great on the car, and sounds incredible. I'm happy to answer any questions you have.

Loose steering
Hi All , I am new to this site and was wondering if anyone could direct me to any threads concerning what feels like loose steering!
its not extreme but does feel like it wanders slightly almost like its a worn ball joint or bush etc.
I have read that some of these issues can be caused by the power steering connectors becoming contaminated.
Is this something which is common and does it have any easy fix ? apart from the obvious like tyre pressures and wheel nuts :)

Power window issue
I have always had issues with my windows not functioning correctly from time to time, but it would always correct itself with a couple ignition cycles. Now I have a passenger window that has not corrected itself, it will not go down. I have searched this site for a solid answer and have come up without one. I have checked the driver door deactivation switch to the passenger door. Both the driver and passenger window switches are sending 12.5 volts to the window motor. I have removed the door panel and checked with a meter. A solid 12.5 volts is getting to the regulator motor, but will not move the window.
I am looking for advice before I start hanging parts on my 8. I believe my regulator is bad, but I am not completely sure. I am an original owner of an 05 and this is not my first rodeo with the electrical gremlins in the 8 as I stated above. I have already done the extra, extra and extra grounds under the hood, but that was years ago. I appreciate the guidance and thank you in advance.

JDM Tuning Discussion
samedi 29 mars 2014
Now before you turn on your flame thrower just read what I have to say and think about it objectively. Don't immediately reply to this thread. Just think about it. This thread should be about nothing but discussing JDM tuning methods. I don't care if you get 350+ HP out of your kit with a Cobb. Talk about it in your own build threads (which I do enjoy reading).
I've been doing a lot of research on the various tuning options that we have available to us outside of Japan and frankly, it's sickening. If you have a series 1 your options are basically either Mazdaedit or the bullshit Cobb AP monopoly agreement with MM. If you own a series 2 then basically all you have is Mazdaedit (I am aware that there are exceptions out there no need to note them here). Mazdaedit doesn't seem bad but it also doesn't seem like everything is understood about it yet.
So.... this got me thinking (dangerous I know) about how JDM tuners have been tuning their FI RX-8s. I decided to do some research and the results are surprising and seem to go against some of the popular beliefs out there i.e. don't use a piggy back ECU, the Greddy E-manage is crap, NA RX-8s are hard to get 200+ HP out of, the list goes on.
So here is the question. What JDM tuning methods are you familiar with and what are they doing that is different from what we have been doing? That's the topic of discussion. I think it's important to compare to help our community improve our quality of life when it comes to tuning options. Do I expect this thread to produce some sort of magical tuning option for us? No. Without at least talking about it though we will never get there..
Here is a long list of observations that RE-Amemiya did on the RX-8. It's translated using google translate so keep that in mind. They even provide examples of a couple maps although they are pretty illegible. They also talk about the difference between their ECU and the OEM ECU. If you are in Japan they charge about the equivalent of $1000 USD to tune your car with their ECU. Dyno results are also at the bottom of the page using their ECU.
RE-Amemiya Site
Here is a link to one of their maps. It looks like it's for ignition timing.
Ignition Map
Here is a thread discussing what has been done to the RE-Amemiya RX-8. Note that this car is using both the Redom Mini A and the Greddy E-manage.
http://ift.tt/QtVXfd
Here is another feature discussing several different RX-8s tuned by some of the big names like RE-Amemiya and AutoExe. The RE-Amemiya tuned RX-8 caught my attention because they are using what seems like a piggy back ECU called the RE Amemiya Redom Mini. They claim that just by changing the intake, exhaust and using this ECU they are getting 220HP. If it was anyone else I'd call BS but this is RE-Amemiya, the undisputed kings of rotary tuning (again there is a dyno on their site).
[ FEATURE | R32 Skyline Mayhem ] J.D.M. OPTION INTERNATIONAL
I only found one thread that barely talked about the Redom and it was about the speed limit removal model which is NOT the ECU.
http://ift.tt/QtVYjm
Found this link for actually purchasing the ECU. Note that there are 3 different models and the one I am talking about sepcifically that I know is used in track cars is the RE Amemiya Redom Mini A-Type about $1000 USD. They also have the Knight Sports unit and the Leg Motorsports unit which I have zero info on...

Here is a thread where Takahashi says he used the Knight Sports ECU and had expeceted results with a dyno sheet.

TLDR: What are JDM tuners doing that we aren't? What tools are they using? What's their tunning philosohpy versus ours?
I've been doing a lot of research on the various tuning options that we have available to us outside of Japan and frankly, it's sickening.

Extreme decrease in MPG
Ok so after installing my AEM CAI on my 05 AT rx8, the thing drinks gas like an alcoholic drinks beer. So before the intake, i was getting 16mpg with city driving. And now im getting maybe 10mpg or less, i have not actually calculated it but after about 15 miles from a full tank the gauge will drop 2 tick marks. Obviously this is not a very good way to try to calculate mpg, but i have been sort of afraid of driving it too much with it running so rich. I have reset the fuel trims and the MAFS is clean. I have tried to search the forum for answers but i couldn't find anything about the mpg dropping so low.

Interesting new rear fender flares from R-magic for S1/S2
Check these out, they could really work for someone who has mazdaspeed front and sides, but not the rear. I can't tell about the quality, but what I would do personally is get the S2 bumper/taillights with these fender flares on my S1.

Fat Cat Motorsports Bump Stops
Anyone have any experience with these?
Assuming the stock bump stops fit tightly in the caps and don't move up and down on the shaft, do fat cat motorsports bump stops have the same tight fitment? If not, is it okay that they sit directly against the damper and move freely along the shaft?
I would ask them myself, but I'm not willing to pay their "consulting fee" of $75. On top of the $130(ish) cost for the stops themselves.
Also, are the stock bump stops rubber or some kind of urethane, and does anyone run uncut stops with Koni Sports? If so, what are your Konis set at and do you have any issues?

{ FS } OEM Cat Back exhaust $75 or best offer
I just installed a new cat back exhaust on my 8. There is nothing wrong with the OEM exhaust, I just wanted a new setup.
There are no dents or scratches on it. The tips have residue on them but it can be polished off. Because I'm the second owner of this car I don't know if the exhaust was ever replaced before I bought it. I have 74,000 miles on my 8.
$75 or best offer. I'm only keeping this for a couple weeks, then it's going in the trash. If you want it come and get it.
I live near the Novi area in Michigan.
Thanks,
Jake

Troubleshooting a nonworking clutch
Hey all, trying to figure out how to go forward here.
Yes, I've used the search.
The clutch pedal assembly has been rewelded under warranty and is NOT broken. It is peachy keen and pedal is great.
Basically what is happening, when the car is warm, the clutch doesn't work.
I am thinking it is somehow related to me changing my front brake pads and recompressing the calipers without bleeding the brakes or clutch. The fluid container is very near the max line (still under, though).
Car was working fine until I was coming home from work about two days after doing the brakes, went to shift into 3rd and the clutch didn't engage. Pedal in -> not out of gear. Got it towed home...
Jacked up the car today to see if it was the slave cylinder, but I can't figure it is. I compressed the slave cylinder by hand and it took about 40 clutch pedal presses to refill the slave cylinder with fluid enough that it would engage the clutch.... And that's where the weird part is... I drove it around the block while it was cold. However, as soon as it warmed up, the clutch wasn't working again...
When it's warm, it makes a super weird sound and loses all pressure in the clutch pedal (well, not ALL. when the slave cylinder was fully compressed the pedal went to the floor and stuck, however when it had fluid in it (natural resting position?) it was just very, very soft.)
Here's a video of the sound. It's only at the VERY TOP of the pedal travel, well before it would normally engage the clutch.
I have a full toolbox, but not any weird stuff... I looked up a guide on how to bleed the clutch but I am not sure if it's even worth pursuing that avenue.

Walmart Supercenter
Mill Creek Crossing Shopping Center
3795 Buford Drive
Buford, GA
One important communication item is a 2-way radio, set on channel 7, as there is minimal to no cell coverage up in the mountains.
Planned Route: Walmart Supercenter, Buford Drive, Buford, GA to Nantahala Mountain Villiage, Bryson City, NC
http://ift.tt/1jIIUDm
For those trailering their rotaries, just google directions from Gainesville, GA to Bryson City, NC. We can all caravan together as far as Franklin, NC, then those with trailers can split off to avoid all the curves.
I shouldn't have to write this here, but I have lots of experience caravaning and yes, we are all excited to get to our destination, but let's do it safely and don't leave anyone behind. We do not have to stay in the same line-up all the time, but keep the following in mind:
CARAVANING COURTESIES:
1. ALL vehicles, especially the 1st and last, should have a 2-way radio, set to channel 7. Double check communication before leaving the meeting spot.
2. The lead vehicle should have a passenger to help navigate.
3. The last vehicle should have a passenger or know where they are going.
4. All vehicles should never leave any other vehicle behind, at a stop light, etc. Slow down until the vehicle catches up, and communicate on 2-way to the group.
5. All vehicles should keep an eye on the vehicle behind them and slow down, if need be, that way we do not lose anyone.
6. If you need to pull over communicate via 2-way, or if it is an emergency, try to get the attention of vehicle in front of you and pull over, when they see you are missing, they will let everyone know to pull over and wait. Then we can decide if all need to come back to you, or just wait at another spot.
In general keep count of everyone and the lead vehicle should be aware that all is accounted for by getting info from the last vehicle.

starting issues
hi guys,i just bought a 2003 rx8 as a non starter, I'm going to have a a engine rebuild done on her but I've been playing,i can get her started by going through the de-flood method but she only runs for about 5 mins then stall..
There is a loud popping noise coming from her which I think is the cat..could this be the problem.
The car only has 36,000 miles on the clock..

Suspension overhaul - control arm bushings
I'm planning on replacing some suspension parts soon and I think I'll start with a full front and rear bushing set from Energy Suspension. I really have no idea what condition mine are in at the moment, but I was curious to hear from anyone who has done a full bushing replacement on their 8+ year old RX-8 - particularly with polyurethane bushings.
Was there any noticeable difference in the way the car handled? Any increase in vibration with the polyurethane over the stock rubber ones? My car's handling has become noticeably "harsher" over time, and it seems more difficult to control on uneven surfaces. I know all kinds of things are affecting handling, but the major components appear to be in good shape.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated, as usual!

Introduction with a few questions
Hi all I'm a new RX8 owner from up in Alberta Canada, picked up a 2004 MT for what I thought was a decent price, picked it up cheap knowing it was a project. A closer inspection found a few more issues than I was hoping i would have to deal with, more visual imperfections and stuff that I don't like to deal with, I'm a drive train builder kinda guy, I hate bodywork and paintwork.
Last few weeks have been:
1.Picked up new: headlights, taillights, exhaust
2.Pulled off the bumper to straighten the front section so that the headlights would bolt in.
3.Cleaned out a cheap set of used tails, sealed them up and put them back on.
4.Made a new under tray out of some spare aluminum sheet metal as the stock one was missing.
5. Fiddled around with the bumper alot to improve the fitment and its still pretty bad.
Still on the lookout for a new bumper though as the one on it is crap.
anyways on to the questions
1. Its got a few scratches and stuff I want to fix, none of my local autostores keep the paint in stock, velocity red, whats a good online resource to bu this from? Also does anybody have experiance with how well scratch repair paint matches these cars that are now 10 years old?
2. Flooding issues. I haven't looked up the deflooding procedure as I've always been able to restart it the few times it has done it within a minute by craning and switching between full and no throttle. Every time I've flooded it has been a cold shut off (start it to pull into the shop and shut off before it warms up). I haven't had a flooding issue with a hot shutoff though Is not warming up the car fully before shutoff that big of a mistake or is flooding after a cold shutoff an obvious sign of an issue (starter, ignition, compression)?
3. Rebuild question, now before you tear me apart I have tried searching and I know self rebuilds are not generally recommended. My question isn't can I rebuild my own engine...etc.
I'm more currious about the success rate of rebuilds, as in if you pulled a part a running engine with no glaringly obvious issues (as in a bit of idle hunt, flooded a couple times, slightly ruff idle, but no misfiring issues) does a full tear down, cleaning and reseal generally lead to better compression?

German Castrol in Rx8 with Sohn adapter
I have purchased the Sohn adapter and containers and all and will be installing them as soon as I recover from my recent surgery.
I know Royal Purple is a good oil and supposedly it also burns well, however the burning part is a moot point, since all I will be burning is Idemitsu oil which I also premix with.
Kevin from RotaryResurrection recommended that I do not use the recommended 5W20-5W30 oils but instead use 10W30 for breaking in the new seals and then use 10W40 or 20W50.
German Castrol is 0W30 but its viscosity is on the high side so they say it is more like a 5W30-40
I read somewhere that if you do a lot of low speed driving or stop and go you actually need thicker oil than when keeping the revs high for a long time. At stop and go you have a lot more load supposedly than when just maintaining revs more or less constant, hence the need to change oil sooner if you do a lot of stop and go driving.
Also thinner oil will lubricate better at high revs, so ... I mean this is a question beaten to death by bench racers like us and out of all the discussions on the internet 99% is speculation and 1% is actual knowledge from people who actually work with oils and know what they are talking about.
I was just wondering if anyone has used german castrol.
Also if using Royal Purple, what weight do u use? 10W40?

Anyone with a REW swap project interested in Dry Sump setup?
We are building a dry sump setup for a REW motor. (3 rotor one as well)
Similar to the Xtreme Rotary type setup
Looking to see if there are any interested parties...if we have a few more bodies interested than it will help defray the prototype costs
So far we have 4-5 interested....would love a few more.
Can't say much about cost yet...but it will be less than the Mazda motorsports kit...and use a standalone scavenge pump with the OEM pressure side
If you are interested send me a PM...this is likely about a month out before the prototype is done...so if you are interested drop me a line and I will contact you when I know more

{ FS } Arca's Part Out - Round 1
Alright, so this is the first part round of parting out all the stuff that I was going to use in my Renesis build. Now that I am swapping in a 13b-REW, all these brand new parts that I have laying around need to find new homes.
The first round of my part out will be small items that I can ship easily, mostly aftermarket. If you're eyeing larger parts that you've seen in my build thread, sit tight because Round 2 will include those. Engine parts, bigger exhaust parts, and left over OEM parts will be listed later. Don't want to get overwhelmed.
I will post pictures here in the thread upon request.
Prices are firm. Unfortunately I was blind sided and laid off today, so help a brother out. Unless you have a good reason to make a lower offer (e.g. a link to a store where the price is cheaper than mine because I priced it incorrectly), the answer to lowballs are going to be a resounding f*** you.
All prices INCLUDE SHIPPING to the lower 48 states. I will ship to other places at buyer's expense. Also I will try to ship as quickly as I can, but bare with me in case I run out of boxes or if everything sells at once...
I accept PayPal. If you do not want to send the payment as a gift to avoid fees, add 3% to your total.
PM me for dibs, but if I respond back and don't hear from you for 24 hours after my response, the item will go to the next person in line.

$60 - USED MAF Sensor
SOLD - USED Oil Pan

Looking for the intake tray that goes under the airbox. willing to pay up to $20. Doubtful anyones in my area, so I'd pay shipping too. I had previously asked a couple members with partouts but they never got back to me or fell through. If you think the part is worth more than $20, give me an offer and we'll talk.
Help! Think she's dying...
Yesterday, driving home. I did my normal 1st and 2nd gear pulls to 7500 RPM before leveling out an cruising. Difference was at ~6800 RPM in second, there was a sudden loss in power and a strange smell. No codes or alarms, all gauges clear.
I finished the drive home without issue, but stayed under 5500 RPM. Looked around the engine bay and the smell was gone and nothing out of sorts. Checked oil, looked normal.
Today when I went out to the car and started it, it sprang right to life, but created a large smoke cloud which was solid white and contained hardly any scent. The idle leveled out and the car drove fine.
I stopped and ran in a store, came back out and the care refused to start. Took several attempts before it finally started - again with a large smoke cloud. Car drove fine so I decided to make another pull. At ~6500 RPM the sudden lose of power returned and this time a smoke cloud in the rear view mirror.
Still no codes or gauges providing warning. Drove home the rest of the way under 5K without issue.
I am afraid a seal is letting go. Can anyone provide insight on this behavior?

Should I get rid of my RX-8
Hi guys,
I've been split and a bit worried about keeping my 2004 RX-8. I've recently had a compression test done last week and I'm getting 90psi for front and rear rotor.
My concern is that I don't have the money to rebuild the engine soon and the car starts fine cold or hot (it had trouble starting before because battery was bad, MAF was dirty and Eccentric shaft sensor was full of crud...got that all fix plus the ignition system was overhauled new)
I really love this car because it's a blast to drive and I've accepted the bad MPG lol
I just recently got a SOHN adapter for it and plan to upgrade ignition with a BHR ignition kit... I hope with feeding 2 stroke oil directly via the OMP will extend the life of my engine for years to come.
Also this car has had a great service record all from Mazda running on it's original engine (engine has never been replaced)
Car has 86k on the clock...
So my question is... Should I get rid of the car or keep her?
