Renesis Swap in a JDM RX-7 is realistic....but worth it?

mardi 12 juillet 2016

I would like to stay long story short, but I don't think that I will wind up being brief.

I live in Japan, but I expect to return to the US in 2 years. Skool teechur.:icon_tup:

I am lucky, but I have occasionally had access to salvage 20b engines for less than $4000. Never bought one because I'm not a "rotary" guy. I am a FD RX7 guy. Initially, I wanted to do a LS swap, but the money is what it is for that. If I lived in the US and had no connections here in Japan, a 20b swap would be just as economically unfeasible. I have also had access to FD RX7s with blown engines selling for less than $3000.

I think people can see where my thinking is going if you also know how little Renesis complete engines with 6-speed manual transmissions sell for in the US.

With the 25 year rule, 1991 and up FD RX7s will be exempt right now or very soon depending on the month of manufacture. The costs for a US FD RX7 are still way too high compared to here in Japan. So, getting a FD RX7 with a blown engine and shipping it to the US to my brother's garage to sit is still cheaper than buying in the US. I could get a 20B and maybe this is the inevitable way to go.

However, I've been researching the Renesis engine and so much speculation can be found from 10 years ago and a lot of big talk and dreams posts since then. Lots of hate on the Renesis engine as well. I don't know the justification if there is a justification. But, when I find complete engine/tranny dropouts in the US for less than $1600, this gets my attention.

Not looking for the baddest car out there because I've ridden in cars on the Shuto Expressway that any sane person would not want as a daily driver. 300hp at the crank is good enough for a 2 rotor. Turbo is not preferred. NA with ITBs seems the way to go as far as I can tell. Crazy porting is good for race cars and everybody wants a 4 rotor for a 2 rotor price.

So, even with the massive cost savings of buying a Renesis in the US, will the $2000+ I can save over a 20B simply vanish to moment that I have the engine tuned because it just cannot make power even in 2016 and if it does, it'll blow up?

I know money cures all, but I also know that big name shops like RE Amemiya are not the only rotary tuners in Japan. Smaller qualified shops looking to make a name can do equal work for far less money. True for all cars here in Japan (had a shop in Tokyo quote me $30,000USD to turbo a Suzuki M16 engine when even Monster Sport would not charge near that). Can 300hp reliable NA power be had without having to spend the same amount of money to get a Koenigsegg?

Yes, the force is strong with this noob. I'm coming from a Nissan and Suzuki background, so my rotary knowledge is limited - fact or rumor is hard to split without having a lot of experience.

Hey Guys

So Ive been looking over this site for some time knowing that owning and rx isn't for the faint of heart and finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a RX8.

Sadly, it doesn't look like it was meant to be, the car was running great but lasted me a month and now is asleep in my garage.

Ive been told hundreds of things about what might be wrong, and you know what its like looking for problem solving on the net.

The care just stopped at 100km/h on the freeway, all electrics everything. :shocking:

I had it towed to one mechanic who said there no compression by feeling it with his hand, but didn't know how to work on one. There was another guy around the corner recommended who tried decarbonising and changing spark plugs, but that didn't work out. The car was starting now, but spitting oil from somewhere. He really wanted nothing to do with it and said it would probably be an engine rebuild. He charged me $500, and after a few towing fees, Im flat broke and catching a bus to work.

So here I am now, listening to friends advice and looking for answers on here. Im going to try the ATF treatment, but I noticed as I was removing the spark plugs, that on a particular chamber, the plugs are burned? The car turns on, but doesn't stay on without revs. and once revs are up, there is a fair bit of back firing. No Smoke though. Also for some reason some lights and indicators aren't working either?

Im considering doing a rebuild myself, but before I even go there, I was hoping to cover all options first, especially reading about catalytic converters and other stuff I don't know too much about.

Look forward to hearing from all you Rxies:rock:

Cobb question

Hi all, couple of questions.

First I am prepping to get my MM tune and was wondering if I am using the racing beat intake if that was considered a different diameter MAF tube? On the RB site it says they tried to keep it as exact as possible. Is this satisfactory to start from or do I need to make a base map?

Secondly, I have been on the rx7 forums for years and kind of thought that our login worked on both forums? Am I wrong on that?

Thanks for any help

Need Help Tracking Down Mystery Wire

I've been a terrible owner and have neglected a cut wire since I've owned my 8. It is near the passenger headlight and runs between the ECU housing, coolant bottle, and the frame. The ground wire is cut near the gray clip that the wire connects to. I don't have any check engine lights, all lights work on that side as far as I can tell, and I haven't noticed anything not functioning properly.

Any idea what it could be?

Need Help Tracking Down Mystery Wire

Bought a 2007 RX-8 ... now worried.

What's up all!

After months and months of looking, I finally found a RX-8 that I thought was in perfect shape since it was sold by a National Dealer.

It's a 2007 Sport model, automatic with 91k miles. 1 owner, a local trade to a Subaru Dealer, Car Fax results were "perfect." Exterior/interior in perfect shape. The car basically looks "new." Knowing of the engine problems, I said no to many private sellers and third party auto dealerships. This one I got a little over a week ago was the only RX-8 sold by a new car dealership that I found.

Well, I took it to my local Mazda dealer today and found out the compression test failed. I was told the range should be 6.9 to 8.5. Rotor 1 came in at 6.4, 6.6, 6.6 and Rotor 2 came in at 6.5, 6.5, 6.3. Dealer said I need a new engine.

Question to those experienced, is mid-6's really that bad? I'm having no hot/cold start issues. Car runs smooth.

I spoke with a couple SoCal shops and both told me just to be observant while starting the car. I don't really want to spend 4-5k on a new engine now, but will I cause more problems down the line if I don't change out the engine now (or just flip the car and sell it now since I may be able to recoup most my money back)?

The only other issue Mazda found was the is small leak in the transmission cooler lines. They had to order the hoses and when arrived, I'm having those replaced. Aside from that, the car has no other problems.

The compression test results were a huge bummer that now has got me worried.

Thoughts? Thanks!
