Help with new noise on throttle blip

jeudi 12 janvier 2017

Hey everyone,

I have searched the forum and read quite a bit but the number of results that come back for various types of "noise" in this car is pretty insane. So, I apologize ahead of time if this issue has already been discussed and I couldn't find it.

Also, I'm not necessarily looking for a solution so much as additional things I should be checking and testing.

So the problem is that my 2004 MT GT is making a new noise when I blip the throttle from idle. When asking other people for ideas, it has been described as a "poof", "chuff", "kick", and "surge". It sounds like a vacuum leak or pressure purge but it only lasts for like 1/10th of a second. I specifically noticed it when just blipping enough to get over the threshold into my garage but it also does it when the car is not under load. It does not make this noise if you accelerate gently. After having my wife blip the throttle and trying to track it down, it seems to be coming from the UIM area.

I uploaded a video of the noise here:
Just in case it matters, this condition started after I performed the de-flood procedure (remove the fuel pump fuse, disconnect the air pump, crank). I had moved the car from sitting outside on a cold day into the garage (without letting it warm up) and then the next time I tried to start it, the battery had apparently drained to nearly dead and the engine flooded.

At this point, I have removed the airbox, accordion tube, throttle body, UIM, and oil filler neck/vacuum solenoid block. Everything seems to be in good condition and order; all of the vacuum hoses are where they should be an in good repair. I also logged some ECU data and the only thing that seems to be off is trailing timing goes way off (drops to -30) for one frame and then jumps back to about 10 which is closer to what the map says it should be.

The only thing I can think to do at this point is to test the vacuum solenoids but after that, I'm pretty much stuck.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what to check and test next?

Thanks!
Bryan
