Hello and strange cruise control question.

Hi everyone. I finally joined because I recently purchased a car after moving back to the US after almost 10 years and had to sell my R34. Now It's a Blue '04 RX-8 I'll be enjoying in Hawaii. I've alre gained a lot of insight from this site and enjoyed the experience that was installing the BHR ignition earlier today.

I only have one question I'm hoping someone more experienced than I could answer and that I couldn't find previously on the site after searching.

My cars cruise control doesn't work when I first turn the car on. No lights on the dash or anything when I press the buttons. If I get up to operating temps and drive the car for maybe 30 minutes then turn it off and back on the cruise control works as it normally would. Is this some sort of electrical problem I need to be worried about? Could it signify some sort of underlying issue I need to get addressed quickly?

I have a CEL on but when I run the codes it's only for an O2 sensor that I'll be fixing when I get a new Cat.

CEL light troubleshooting

ok guys here's the issue:

I have a 2004 automatic rx8 with 91000 km. I had a bad coil last year so I replaced the coils/wires/plugs at 87000km and had an oil/filter change at 90000km before putting the car in storage for the winter.

I started the car about a week ago after having it away with the battery out. It took about 15 minutes and a couple rough idle stalls before it started running smooth, I'm guessing it might have been burning rich??

I drove if for a day with no issues, then added some marvel mystery oil to the fuel as a fuel treatment. About an hour after doing this it flashed a solid CEL.

When I'm using the paddle shifters in second gear and redline, sometimes the CEL will blink 3 or 4 times then go back to solid. Also the red led redline light that usually blinks isn't coming on anymore.

Any ideas folks? I doubt it's the plugs coils or wires they're OEM with 4000km on them and there's no rough idle or power loss like I experienced when I burned out a coil last year so I highly doubt it's a misfire either.


Series 2 Rotor Housing

I was sitting in bed last night, and this came to me. If this was previously discussed and I missed it, I apologize, I could not find it.

I have been reading a lot of the threads about failures, and about series 1 vs series 2. I know that for series 2, they redesigned a lot of little things, including the OMP and the fuel injectors. My premise is simple:

Could you put the updated rotor housings in a series 1 engine? You would gain the center OMP nozzle (better oiling). Now, you do have additional fuel injectors, but I assume you could block those ports off and just use the four you had before. This would give you the better oil dispersion of a series 2, but the benefits of the SOHN from series 1. The racing beat oil mod can be used to increase oil pressure, to get closer to series 2 levels.

Im not talking about a series 2 engine in a series 1 car, I know thats been debated to death.

Would you gain anything from the extra oil nozzle? How much trouble would this be, assuming you are already doing a complete tear down. From what I could see, the dowel pins to connect the housings together are the same, so it should work mechanically.

Just spitballing here, let me know what you think

RX-8 AST/Moton length

To those who have used these or are using them, do you by any chance know the overall length of these? I might have a chance to buy some, the only issue is that they need to be within ±1 of the fully extended length of the OEM shock. I know a few of you have used these!


clunking/grinding noise

Just wondering if anyone has experienced the exact same issue as I am having and found a fix to it. I recently have been experience a clunking noise that could literally be felt through the pedals when turning slowly over dips and road imperfections. It gets really loud almost making a popping sound when angling in a driveway or gas station. The car is an 09 RX8 MT with 95k miles. Only suspension mods are Koni yellows+eibach springs. They have been on for about 40k miles. Any input will be much appreciated.


rx8 died wont start

Hey this is my first post and need some help. I have a 04 Mazda rx8 that won't start... Has 100k miles and all stock. I was on my to payson from Phoenix when my car left me stranded on the side of the highway .. got it towed home it had a dead battery from trying to start it the day it broke down. Charged the battery and car started rite up. Drove it for about two weeks and car dies again and now won't start at all. It has new plugs wire coils and e crank sensor . The only code it's giving is u0073


Fuel Pump Housing Retaining Ring

Recently replaced my fuel pump and didn't look exactly where my retaining ring was pointing to when I removed it. I don't want it to leak so does anyone know how far you turn it past the start mark on the tank? I know you line the 3 lines that are closest to each other on the ring to the start position on the tank and go one full revolution back to start. Mines really tight just being past the word start by about an inch. But if look closer on the tank it has the words min and max on it after start. I don't think mine will go that much further. Videos I've seen and post I could find only said to go a little past start but no one ever said anything about the min and max positions.


No Output from HU

Can anyone help me troubleshoot my issue? I have stock non bose HU with single CD. everything still works, CDs read, Fm tunes but I have no output from the deck. i checked speaker wires and have no voltage at any off them. It just cutout while i was leaving my driveway the other day, no bumps didn't floor it, just normal left turn onto 2 lane.

I have opened the unit and started tracing the signals but loose them in the capacitors. Nothing appears damaged or burnt, not even a questionable solder connection. I'm completely baffled.
The only thing i can think off is the factory amp chip died but I don't know how to test that.

Crank Sensor = ESS Sensor?

Is this correct? I have a bad crank sensor and need to replace it but I'm guessing they are the same thing. If not, where is the crank sensor located?


Apex Seals

I'm wondering whats been tried for apex seals, I'm thinking about rebuilding an engine and looking for an opinion on what to use.

I see there are a few different brands out there, but I'm looking for real life experience not claims.

What is limiting reliable HP and how to get past it?
Ok, like the title says I’d like to start a discussion on what limits our horsepower and how to get around it. First I’ll share what I think.

I believe we have most of the answers now. The problems we have with engine reliability stem from three things:

Not enough octane:

The combustion pocket shape makes it highly susceptible to knock, this is partially countered high surface area and the combination of water/oil cooling. Octane becomes more essential at higher RPMs, and at higher compressions. Since our engine runs at high compression and high RPMs it needs high octane out of the box. Add boost and it gets worse. This is why we have seen decent gains NA with e-85.

Solutions: Race Gas, E-85, Water injection.

Not enough cooling:

As stated above the combustion pocket is cooled on both sides. Operation in boost adds a little bit to the heat load to everything. Backpressure keeps the pressure in the combustion chamber from dropping as far during the exhaust phase, which keeps temperature from dropping as far, which raises the average temperature the rotor is exposed to, and increases the temperature parts of the housing and irons are exposed to. This also increases the average temperature the leading spark plug is exposed to.
Putting an intercooler in front of the radiator makes the cooling problem worse.

Solutions: Water injection, Additional Radiators, Oil Coolers, Colder spark plugs.


Improper Timing:

Ok, this one is going to get me flamed, but I think timing is a huge issue. Because of the compression difference we will inherently run less timing then other rotary engines. The cooling and octane issues are amplified with bad timing. Detonation leads to more heat transferred to all surfaces including the spark plugs, eventually that heat transfer causes power to be lost, and after that it leads to engine damage either from the detonation or from preignition. Even if the timing doesn’t lead to immediate engine damage, the increased heat transfer to the side irons will cook the side seal springs. But on the other side of the coin running too retarded will cause high EGTs and damage side seals, or at least that’s the current belief.
Split is a bit of black magic. You can get higher power with smaller split. In theory you could even run a negative split in boost for power gains, but if you ever lean out unintentionally engine destruction will quickly follow.
I’m currently working on different ignition timings and testing the water. Still waiting on aspects of my build to support further experimentation.

Solution: Push a fairly conservative timing, looking to limit EGT instead of pushing power. Run a higher split at higher boosts. Possibly disabling the trailing plug at high rpm (since blanking is not an option for idle). Push boost instead of timing. This is not a comprehensive solution, it will evolve as more people are successful.

Losing Power/misfires at 3-4k rpm under acceleration

I've had my (2004) car for a few months now and other than a sticky fuel gauge and CD changer, everything runs great and I love it. I'm the third owner and I trust the previous owner to have taken care of it, she currently has 93,242 km (57,938 miles for my American brothers)

The issue was this. It had been running like a dream this whole time, then I took it out for a short trip after 3 days in the garage, and all of a sudden she was fighting me on any sudden acceleration or when I put any kind of load on the engine, especially around 3-4k rpm. It felt like it was hiccupping or something. I figure its misfires in the engine as such I pulled out the ignition coils, cables and sparkplugs. The sparkplugs were pretty dirty, and one of the top ones was very corroded at the contact with the cable (green/brown). The ignition coils were in similar shape with all but one having significant white dots. I have no idea when the previous owner may have changed them.

My questions are threefold

1. Could I be misdiagnosing the problem? What other things should I check/replace to rectify the issue

2. Are these suitable replacements? MAZMART - Serving The Mazda Community Since 1980. Wishlist

3. Could anyone point me towards a European/Swiss retailer to save on shipping costs? My cheapest option is around 60 Euro

I like modifying cars for their looks and shock value. This is because around my area the police are quick to act on anyone breaking the laws and if I'm 'zoom zoom'ing around then i'll get pulled over pretty quick.
All this being said, I want to do some mods to this car which will really turn heads, without having to break any laws, so any advice on what Kind of mods I can do would be great :) a list of potential things I want to do already is below, and I know some of these things seem ridiculous/useless, but at the end of the day it's my car and I want it to be completely unique

Newbie Post- credit card key alternatives

Hello everyone!

I just bought a 2009 Rx-8 Grand Touring with 65k. I'm in love with the car. Has minor cosmetic things that I need to fix but did a compression test and a mazda inspection and the cat was in excellent conditions according to Mazda.

When I got the car it only came with one key. I began wondering, is it possible to have one of the 2013 n up key fobs used in the 09 model with the credit card key?

Thoughts?

We're starting to build a drivers list for the Cayuga track event signup on the May 10th
We have the track on Sunday from 5:00pm - 9:00pm

A little background -

Cayuga Toronto Motorsports Park. Located in Cayuga, just south of Hamilton, Ontario, this developing Motorsport complex can be configured as two smaller circuits of 1.2 and 1.8 km each or one large 3 km road course. We will use the 3 km circuit. The paved surface is a safe, flat design with good run-off room (no barriers or guardrails) and excellent sight-lines. The course has ample straights, challenging large and small chicanes, tight 90 degree and sweeping high speed turns. A truly good technical course.
It is a great learning track with two long straights, 11 challenging turns, safe run-off everywhere, and a separate area for exercises.
We usually have a briefing prior to getting out on the track, followed by a few warm up laps, then lapping for the rest of the day. "Lapping" refers to just that, doing laps. For beginners group, Passing is STRICTLY prohibited except on the back straight, and only when the person in front of you has allowed you by by signaling you to pass. We reserve all rights to kick people off the track that are driving dangerously and/or aren't listening to track marshalls.

Hard to believe that May is already here! It is that time of the month again where we will get to enjoy all things cars! The weekends have been pummeled with rain but look like our luck is changing! Saturday looks to be clear, warm and sunny! The buzz on the web is that this should be a very good outing for the beginning of spring. This is the time of the year that this really gets the attendance going. It has been an amazing event that just gets better as we grow and continue to include new people and vehicles. It is a great outlet for the car crazed and I hope we continue to have a safe and spectacular event.

A special thank you for the continued support from Foreign Cars International, NC Music Factory, Mattie's Diner and Automotive International they have really stepped up to support us and keep this great event going. If you see them out please thank them for their support.



Just to restate the rules for those that may have missed it or those that just need a reminder.

Here are the rules:

-Absolutely no burnouts or horse play in the lot or the roads out front. It is irresponsible and safety is a huge concern for us. This is a one strike rule!. Violators will be asked not to return and the mater will be turned over to the CMPD/Sheriff's Dept.
-The Uptown division of the Mecklenburg police department is well aware of our event and will patrol the area. Speeding and unlawful behavior will not be tolerated on the public road out front or on the NC Music Factory's property. 911 will be called if antics prevail and the CMPD will respond!

-No vendors will be allowed to set up tables, booths or tents. As before you can hand out fliers if you wish but no signage or structures allowed.
-Trailers, box trucks and haulers will be asked to use lot #2 for parking, spaces are at a premium and these vehicles take up too much space and maneuvering them around is too high a risk for accidents.
-We need to leave the facilities better than we find them on each visit. NC Music Factory is letting us use this facility free of charge so we need to respect it, there are trash cans throughout the property please do not litter.
-Parking nearest to the Diner is reserved for regular restaurant patrons. We have the other 662 spaces!

Changes:

-there will be uniformed officers stationed at two points on the property, with one being in the turn lane of the frontage road. We hope this will deter any burnouts, rapid rates of speed and general idiotic moves leaving the parking lot.
-We are asking the bystanders that stand in front of the dinner to disperse, if those leaving don't have an audience of on lookers and video cameras it will greatly decrease the incidents that are possible. There is plenty of room in the parking look to take pictures and see the cars up close.
-Removing the on lookers at the entrance also will reduce the chances of anyone getting hurt by a vehicle that looses control.

Headlight Replacement?

Hi, so I watched a YouTube tutorial on how to replace the headlights in my 2005 Mazda RX8, and my (not very mechanical) dad and I went to work on replacing the original bulbs with 10,000K HID bulbs that I made SURE fit online. And then we got everything unattached and the headlight that was currently in the car had a completely different end attachment than the ones I had bought, and the ones I had seen people remove and install in videos...
The headlights I purchased (and that I have seen in videos of people with the same car) have a connecting end that is round with a piece in the center. The headlights that are actually IN my car have an end that resembles a wall socket in a house. 2 prongs for a male end, and 2 openings for the female... Does anyone know why this is, and if I can replace it?


Does Misfire mean same as Back Fire?

I've read the intro to rx8 pist.., slowly and thoughtfully. ..

But if I was hearing back fire after starting car if I needed jump start mean I shold pause for alarm?

Hi everyone. First I want to thank everyone that has put so much of their time and energy in creating this plethora of knowledge for us here to sift through. I almost walked away from my potential buy due to the reality that this isn't your normal daily car. ...
BUT that's what's so damn great about an 8... The little things forum really impressed me. It was love at first sight in 2003 the first time iseen this car, before I knew rotary existed, and I've never had the chance to get in one.

So here is my situation, and id like feedback. ..

2009 grand touring (63k) but was in a collision. The driver side back door is dent in and the side impact air bag deployed. Everything else is Gem. The car was bought at Auction, and was well taken care of in and outside cosmetically. The battery was quite corroded and i tried to start but it didnt turn it over. We put a battery pack on and it turned over quick and good BUT I swear I kept hearing minor back fires.
Is this because I had to jump start or concern of something else?
I'm waiting for compression test and won't buy it without one, mostly curious about back fire....

need advise on engine

I have a 2004 rx8 6speed manual. its my friends car which i bought off him for $2,000.
It blew a seal and there it coolant in the chamber and failed compression test. the engine only had 60,000 miles on it, and my friend took really good care of it. would you guys say its rebuildable or would the housings be toasted. the car was turned of immediately when it was overheated. Im looking at rebuild, rebuild plus turbo, junk yard engine, or reman engine. please let me know what you guys think.

I need the stock tune

Could someone please email me a copy of the stock tune for an 07 Rx8 on the Cobb Access Port (I think it's 06-08 Tune). Not sure how but somewhere along the way the tune got written over and is no longer the stock tune.

Please let me know if you are willing and I will PM you me email address.

The reason is the car is flooded and not sure if I can get her going this time. She has 98,000 miles so I think I am going to go and beg the dealer for a new engine. First I need to do some un-mods.

engine problem

I have a 2004 rx8 I have two questions.....question 1 under heavy acceleration at about 4 rpm my car seems to miss fire and check engine light comes on then goes away car runs fine until I hammer the gas and then same thing any idea's? ?.....question 2 if I don't start the car at least once a day my battery goes dead what is draining the battery? I have replaced battery 2 times in last six months i have a battery tender on it but if i leave it off for a day or so the battery is dead thanks for any help

{FREE} 2004/5 RX-8 parts

Neighbor and I both have RX-8s and we have various parts we would like to get rid of.
We both have CAIs so stock air boxes and engine covers are available.
I have a complete stock exhaust available and the converter is in excellent condition (no low ballers please). Rear diff (4.44:1), stock radiator with rock guard, air pump and other stuff
Some of the stuff will be put out on the curb for trash pickup this Thursday morning so act fast.

Long Time Lurker and Shinka Owner

hey guys!
this forum has been a wealth of information to me the last year and a half. i bought my 2005 Shinka (affecionately known as the Purple Nurple) with 81k on it september 2013, and just broke 101k this month. runs like a champ

Since i bough the car, i've been premixing with AMSOIL dominator synthetic premix at 4 oz. a tank, have replaced plugs, coils, wires, air filter. i've cleaned the ESS, MAF, and throttle body, replaced a bunch of bulbs with LED ones, and changed my oil with near religious regularity, along with topping it off every other tank. i've used Castrol GTX 5w-30 dino oil and a bosche filter. i've also done numerous other things to the car, but i cant remember them all right now.

needles to say, everything i've done to the car has been though the knowledge i've gained from this forum, and i continue to learn from it.

Lost my 8

well guys today is a sad day,

I got my 8 Repo'd today at my work :/

missed a couple payments cause I had other priories at the time and now shes gone :/

I know theres still a chance to get her back but I just don't have the funds to get her out of repo and come up with 3 months of missed payments. I'm sad as hell. :banghead:

I need to sell before 5/5 (hence the low price) due to being relocated for work. I bought this car used in 2007 @ 40k miles. Been lovingly cared for by an engineer (me) the whole time. Oil changed at the required intervals or earlier.

New stuff:
-Newer tires (Last fall), spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coils, silicone radiator hoses, battery
-Transmission rebuilt + new stock clutch last year at around 120k miles.
-Replaced fuel pump due to leak @ about 120k miles

Upgrades:
-Mazdaspeed exhaust.
-reinforced clutch pedal bracket
-All season Mazda floormats

Body:
-Replaced right front fender in 2007 due to fender bender with guard rail on snow ~10 mph, NO structural damage
-Typical scratches & Dings, paint in generally good condition. Cared for with Klasse AIO and clay bar each season
-No known rust damage
-Front lower lip, the small plastic piece below the fender is re-attached with zip ties... (parked and miscalculated a curb...)
-Rear right tail light gets condensation when cold sometimes (typical problem with RX-8s)

Engine:
-Runs pretty well. Sometimes has rough idle or stalls on idle - always restarts fine.
-Check engine light on: says it's O2 sensor & ECM (been on for over a year now, no issues)
-Radiator hose manifold looks like it has some corrosion. I fixed most of it and it hasn't lost radiator fluid in about 5k miles. One day you'll have to replace it though, it's only around $100.

Drivetrain:
-No power steering - intermittent. I've corrected many times it by cleaning the ground underneath the airfilter box, but it always turns off again. I recommend pulling the fuse for safety until you figure out how to permanently fix it.

Inside:
-Clean with typical wear
-CD player likes to skip, does not play when it's cold.

Magnaflow 23909 Catalytic Converter Issues

Uhg, seems like they welded the converter in the wrong orientation to the pipe. The O2 sensor won't fit. Of course no one is answering their phone. :rant:

Anyone else have this issue? Need to pass emissions and this is a setback...

Unknown vacuum port

Very close to my dipstick I discovered a nipple for a vacuum line. I put a vacuum cap on it. I am wondering what is supposed to be connected there. Its right next to the dipstick. I can post a pic if needed.

{ FS } 2004 Brilliant Black RX-8 GT - $4000

I am unfortunately, very regrettably, selling my beloved RX-8. It really pains me to do this but I unfortunately need a daily driver that is a bit more friendly on my wallet :(

This car was originally purchased from a member on these boards (Nate340) towards the end of Spring in 2013. I have owned this car for about 2 years now and have taken very good care of it. It was purchased with around 210,000km on the body, and only 20,000km on the engine and transmission. The car as it sits now has 274,000km on the body and roughly 88,000km on the motor and transmission. There are absolutely no issues with the drive train*. It starts, and drives perfectly every time. There are no issues with any of the electronics on the car. Everything is functioning 100%.

Mods on the car:
LS2 coils
K&N Air Filter
Clear Side Markers
3M Clear Bra
iPod Connection for Head Unit

Noteworthy services done while in my ownership:
New catalytic converter at 220,000km (2013)
New OEM Clutch Kit installed at 250,000km (2014)
New OEM Spark Plugs 250,000km (2014)
New Spark Transfer International (STI) ignition wires 250,000km (2014)

The RX-8 is a GT model so it has all the options minus the navigation.

Now I will admit, this car was driven in the winter once. Prior to my ownership, Nate340 stored it every winter. The lack of rust on the body is indicative of this.



























The front of the car has a 3M Clear Bra installed that has faded over the many years of highway driving. The paint underneath is 100% untouched. Pictures also show the car with OEM winter mats, a set of OEM summer mats will be included in the sale as well.

I am looking to sell the car as is, with a valid emissions test for $4000. The car is located in Oakville, ON.

*The only issue I have with the car is it sometimes makes a squealing sound when engaging the clutch. I have had it diagnosed and was told it is a bearing in the clutch that is not properly lubed. It does not affect how the car drives and only happens intermittently when it is cold outside. This started around March and was diagnosed the same month it initially occured.
