Hey all, first time rotary and mazda owner here! Picked up on 04 six speed manual with 94k miles on the body and 41k on the motor replaced by mazda under warranty. I came from driving a 2000 bmw 323ci which I sold in order to buy an rx8. What a world of difference in performance and fun. My 8's body isn't in as good of shape as the bimmer, but its about to hit the paint booth next week anyway :mdrmed: I've driven quite a few sports cars and I have to say the rx8 is easily the most fun car to drive I have ever been in. I'm glad to be part of the family now! :beer05:




Alignment issues?

My nephew says that my right rear wheel is leaning in at the top. Is this an issue I can remedy? Is it a shock issue?




Odd starting and burning smell.

So from the beggining. I would get in. Either let it fully warm up in the driveway or if i'm in a rush i will just short shift and keep it under 2500 until its fully warm. So maybe twice in the year and a a half i have owned my rx8 the car will studder start and begin shooting out smoke that smelled hot and kinda like burning engine.the first occurence was running into the store real fast. When i came back out and this happened i thought it was some version of a flood because the store was fairly close to my house i figured that i wasnt Truly warmed up. so (at proper tempurature) i floored the car all the way home and sat in my driveway redlining it. (This as an effort to burn off any excess fuel). Well it worked. After lots of revving i cut it off. waited 30 seconds and it started up gloriously like before. Well today i had the problem again when getting gas. i drove maybe ten minutes from work to the gas station. it studdered so i finished getting home and i used the same method to fix it. lots of redlining. What is everyones oppinion on this Is this some sort of slight flooding? or am i just ruining my engine by excessive redlining. i have no idea. i just know the redlining fixes the problem.

Need Info about Compression readings and hot starts

Hi, I am a newbie here so forgive me if i say something stupid



I did a compression test on my RX8 2007 Model. The upper rooter reading was 95 PSI and lower rooter reading was 80 PSI. First if anybody can let me know if these are livable readings?



Secondly i saw many posts which mentioned that low compression means poor starting. Well, My car always gets start within 4 seconds either cold or warm temperature.



So, All Gurus, whats your take on this? thanks




Help! 2005 rx-8 won't start after storing

Hello everyone.I've had my RX8 since 2006 and being in the military have had to store it multiple times. This last week I pulled it out of a 4 month storage stay. I added a couple oz of marvel mystery oil to the fuel and took out the spark plugs and added a couple oz to the engine as well and then let it sit for 3 days. As I said I have started it after storing at least 5 times before but this time it is being extremely difficult. I have a brand new battery and I'm supporting with a shop charger. I took out each spark plug and cleaned it very well. I even removed the air intake and we tried misting fuel while cranking it to shock it to start and nothing. When we check the spark on the plugs by removing and grounding them when we crank it all I get is the first spark and then nothing.



Any recommendations or your thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!



p.s. I find it really odd a new member cannot post something to the troubleshooting forum for 'a little while'. I imagine troubleshooting is one of the more dominant reasons for people joining and posting to a forum such as this so it really doesn't make any sense. ( I'm sure it's to control spam, phishing etc. but it irks me).

Burning Smell From New Clutch

My original clutch died, so I bought an ACT "street duty" performance clutch from BHR along with a lightened flywheel, as the transmission shop said the old one warped from heat from the clutch slipping. The shop installed the new clutch and I've had it back a little over a week. Every time I drive, when I get out I smell that distinct smell a clutch has when you really roast it, except I've been driving normally. The clutch feels fine, really grabs hard in fact. Is this normal for a new clutch to smell like this as it wears in or is something wrong with it?

I just recently acquired my first RX-8. It is unfortunate how it happened, I crashed my Mini Cooper due to black ice, totaled it. I had always wanted an RX-8, so I did a search and there was an 08 with 34k miles on it 11 miles from my house.

Its been a long time since I've logged in here and to my surprise my PM box was filled with messages asking about engine rebuilds, turbo kit installs, custom fab work ect.



I really appreciate all the questions and everyone's support over the years, but I've closed up shop to pursue other opportunities.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sad to announce that RPM Motorsports is no longer. I won't be taking on anymore projects or engine builds.



I've been offered a position as head mechanic for Mantella Autosport which will be campaigning 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z28's in the 2015 season of the IMSA Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge.



My entire focus will be on the upcoming season with the Mantella Autosport team. I'm sad to see the RPM doors close officially, but realistically and financially it doesn't make sense to keep RPM as an evening and weekend business.



The last 12 years of RPM Motorsports have been a blast, tons of rotorhead friends have been made over the years and loads of cool cars have been built. It's finally time to focus on some personal car projects in my spare time.

coolant seal falure repair

I am afraid I have a. Coolant seal failure,last night I was on my way home and heater stopped working ,I pulled into m garage and it was showing hot . I checked water bottle and it was low.I added antifreez and water more than it should be .I checked underneath and saw no leaks. I started it back up (started fine) I need to fuel her up I headed out to station but temp gauge went over Half way .I turned around and came back home.I went less than a mile ,I pulled back into my garage and saw where cool at had dumped out. AT this point it was wtf.... where am I losing coolant from .??

I poured water into water bottle and I heard a loud pop (oh %&$*) coolant was leaking from a new lower radiator nose . I fixed that and refilled with coolant . She was hard to start . When she started lotfs of white smoke from exhaust .over flow was spraying water bubbles coming up in water bottle .spewing coolant out overflow. No heat in cab ...I cut her off ate dinner and went back out, hard to start once started pressure cap is popping off ? White smoke from dxhaust---

What is involved in a coolant seal repair? Stuck thermo stat??

Thoughts comments prayers please

Getting no spark on rotor #2 -- not bad coils!

Hi all, I am presently absolutely baffled here.



As the title states, I'm not getting a spark on rotor #2. I have switched out the coils, plugs, and wires several times. I got a neat little tool that I can put between the wire and the plug, that lights up when it gets a jolt. This works fine on rotor #1, leading and trailing plugs.



Basically, I feel like I've ruled out plugs, wires, and coils. So, what's the next thing to look at? I've searched and searched, and can't seem to find anyone else with this problem -- where any kind of resolution was posted.



I'm also getting a cel about a problem with the ess sensor, so I replaced it. I also replaced that toothed disk behind the main pulley that communicates to the ess. This changed nothing.

quick question..rx feel down on power til 6000rpm,then shoots of from there,like turbo lag..somtimes when I then let of the gas it pulls better..and it eats my petrol when I go past than stuter point..and not normal eating..this thing is thirsty ,plugs ,coils wires are fine..




Random Errors

Can you fix this please? Is anyone else getting this Error? I get it when submitting posts and it is annoying as I have lost a few rather long posts because of it.







Idle surge in neutral - not the neutral switch

So my car has been having an issue where the idle would surge in neutral with the clutch out, but would calm down once the clutch was depressed plus there was a P0850 code. Looking around on here, I saw several instances of people having the same issue and it always turned out to be the neutral switch, which makes sense. So I ordered the switch online and reading about how difficult it is to get to, I took it to a local rotary shop to have them put it on.



Well when they lifted the car, they noticed that a couple of wires near the transmission had been severed, likely the wires going to that switch. They spliced them back together and you would think that was the end of the story.



They fired it up and it still did the same thing. They checked the resistance on the switch and it was indeed changing when shifted. Just to be certain, they connected the new sensor and pushed the button in by hand and it made no difference. For the hell of it, they slapped in a factory airbox in place of my aftermarket one and there was a slight improvement, but not much. I have the original and will likely swap it back in when I get a chance.



It got a little worse after leaving the shop. I'm guessing they not only reset the codes but also the PCM as a whole. The car stalled out on me three or four times on the way to work when I pushed in the clutch. I'm guessing it had learned to compensate for something until they reset it. So now it surges in neutral with the clutch engaged and sometimes stalls when the clutch is disengaged. The only codes that reappeared after about an hour of driving are P0171 and P2270 which, if I'm not mistaken, are probably because the car has no catalytic converter.



There were at least three technicians who work on only Mazda rotaries who looked at it and couldn't figure it out, although in their defense they only had the car for about three hours because I needed it to go to work and only planned for a quick sensor change. So I'm turning to you guys.



I ordered an Ultragauge and looking at the tracking, I think it's waiting on my doorstep right now, so if you need any more information that it can provide, let me know. I don't yet know everything it's capable of.

Rebuilding engine question

hey all, going to be rebuilding my engine and was wondering if there are parts that are reusable. Trying to keep the cost as low as possible because i do plan on swapping in a 13b-rew in a year or two. Yes i know all the maintenance needed with these rotaries and what not. Long story short, i got my 8 with the engine out and have no clue as to if the engine runs or not. Therefore, I'm just trying to take a precaution by doing what i can while the engine is out.



No I've never rebuilt a rotary before but there's no way of learning by not doing it myself. Plus what better feeling is there than knowing you did the work yourself?

Advanced keyless entry card key

I have done a ton of research trying to figure out how to program one of the card style advanced keyless entry keys and it was always very grey. It was unclear if it could be DIY programmed, programmed with a locksmith, or a dealer only job.



So, in case anyone wants to know: if you buy a used key, or one that doesn't have the advanced key pin code tag, the dealership will tell you the "can't" program it because it has already been paired to another car. This is a lie and/or laziness.



I worked with a locksmith (who also didn't know) for a few hours trying to figure it out and we discovered how to do it. You need to have ONE working aux key. That's the key blade that goes in the card key. Then, program using a machine like a SKP-900. Any locksmith should have one. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! All doors need to be closed. This is different than other programming techniques. We tried a bunch of times and always had the door open.



Before calling any locksmith, make sure they have a SKP-900 or something similar because there's no other way.



They charged me $100 to program a card key and cut and program the new aux blade key.



Side note: you only need one working aux key to have a second one made, by a locksmith. You do NOT need a working card key to get one programmed and you only need ONE aux key to program new cards or make new aux keys.



As far as I know, this works with 06-08 series one and 09-11 series two cars with advanced keyless entry systems; credit card style key.

Has anyone ordered the kit from ls1rx8.com? If so which kit? Or is there another company that sells a kit? I'm really looking into doing this in roughly a year when I get back from Afghanistan. I have plenty of time to do research, but this is the route I would like to go. I plan to sell the renesis, and transmission, and put that towards the swap. What does a used renesis with 75k and trans go for nowadays? Thanks guys, any positive criticism would be greatly appreciated!

Street's Build/Engine Replacement Thread

I found my 2004 6 speed rx8 at the end of February of 2014 on Craigslist. I myself didn't know much about the rotary engine just the same as most people who don't own these kind of cars. But as soon as I saw it on Craigslist I had to have so I went and got it. Unlucky for me I didn't do my research on these cars before I bought mine and ended up getting one near the end of its engine life. I bought it with 93k on the engine and drove it from the end of February to the end of June before the engine locked up. It like most 04s had bad compression so it was just a matter of time. I did get the enjoyment of driving it from here where I live in South Carolina down to Daytona Florida for vacation and then for 3 short months. So here it has been sitting for almost 8 months and I love it so much that I'm just going to put a new engine in it.

Loss of power, slow start, rough idle

I've got a 2007 RX8 with 40k miles.



I started having issues a month or two ago. First, the car was slow to start (took a few seconds of cranking for it to turn over). Next, I noticed that I had a lack of acceleration (particularly at low RPMs). Finally, a couple days ago the car started idling a little rough.



I noticed that my gas mileage on the last couple tanks has gone down as well.





I still have a few months left on the engine warranty, but I'm a little worried about taking the car to the dealership right now. I've regularly checked/changed the oil, but I'm sketchy on the other suggested maintenance. If it turns out that the engine is losing compression, will I be denied warranty coverage if they find (for example), that the spark plugs weren't replaced? Anything else I should check before taking it in?




Buying An RX-8

I'm highly considering buying an RX-8 for the reason that I am getting a bit tired of my current car; I want something new and interesting. The RX-8 is at the top of my list in terms of what I'm looking to get. So I've done an extensive amount of research on this car in the past couple of days to acquire some knowledge. Correct me if I'm wrong...



Before buying:

1) Ask about the engine's compression

2) ... what engine it currently has (original/swapped/rebuilt)

3) ... maintenance: coolant flush, oil change, and ignition components



...Here's where I'm a bit stuck



After buying:



I understand this car is all about upkeep (maintenance maintenance maintenance! oil changes every 3k miles, annual coolant flush, new ignition components every 30k miles, top up the oil whenever required). I also understand cooling can be an issue for these engines. However, I've probed around trying to find an answer to my question yet yielding nothing: with regular maintenance, will this car be just like any other? I'm not asking how long these engines last (I've read some stupid responses, and I now understand this is a stupid question to begin with). I understand that there are plenty of contributing factors to engine failure, just like any other car.



When I do purchase an RX-8, would it be a good idea to do an immediate coolant flush, oil change, and a swap for new ignition components? Would it also be a good idea to swap out the thermostat?



Don't bash me too hard for being a noob. I'm eager to buy one; if someone could help by pointing out some things I missed when buying an RX-8 and answer my question, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Some questions from newbie

I'm Alex from Russia, hi all from me and my bear ))



Recently i bought R3 rx8, and have some questions, which can't be answered on my local rx-8 club, because too few R3 in my country )



First, how can i use bluetooth? ) When i push bluetooth button, i hear only something about "passcode" and view "listening" on dash screen. I don't know any passcode, and i need to say it by voice?



Also, i have an aux input by when i push MEDIA button, nothing happens on dash screen, and no any sound from device wich attached via aux cable.



I tried to find answers on Series II electronic forum here, but unsuccessfully.

Hey. I am looking for an OEM NAV system from Series 1 8s. That means I need the main unit (screen) and trim, DVD player, disc, shifter console trim with NAV controls, antenna, and wiring harness. If you have any of these, post or PM me details, a pic, and/or what you want for them. Ideally I would like to buy it all in one transaction, but I am willing to do it piece by piece. VR6 RX-8 Swap

So after thinking about various engines and options I decided to go a different route.

I looked at SR20's, 1J and 2J engines, even some LS engines. I almost settled on an Isuzu engine before my friend mentioned the VR6 which I completely forgot about.



So I got some money together and bought one! It had one owner and only 113k miles on it. Which I can believe after opening up the valve cover.

I got the engine, harness and ECU out of a 98 VW GTI VR6.

Now the fun begins, I need to get my hands on a trans and start working on bolting them together, then I can finally work on mounting it in the car.

I have a 2004 rx8 and I love her! First issue just happened. High idle at start up. Please tell me this is not the beginning of the end. After driving for a minute, it stopped and went back to normal. I just restarted her again, and it's fine but I dont believe in single occurrences.

Help! Rx-8 Broke Down! Why!!?!?!?!

So tonight I was driving down the road, and when my car went to go shift into 3rd gear, the exhaust popped and stayed in second gear and wouldn't accelerate into 3rd gear or go any faster at that point.



I pulled over to the side of the road and the car shut down automatically on its own.



Now the car wont start. I got it towed to my mechanic but i wont find out whats wrong for a few days so what do you guys think?



Whats wrong with it?

How much will this repair be?

How long will this repair take?



A little info on my car



- It has aftermarket borla exhaust

- Its automatic

- Just got an oil change 2 days ago

- 93k miles




how to tell if my 2008 rx 8 gt flooded

Bought the 2008 rx 8 gt in september 2014, had it parked since then went to start it today and i could hear the sound of the engine misfire and sputter white smoke out of the exhaust after about 4 minutes i shut the car off cause i seen the engine light flashing. I tried to start it again a couple of hours later but it wouldn't turn over i had pumped the gas at the very last second to see if it would turn it over but nothing. Its winter right now where i live and i did do a cold start. Any suggestions or procedures i can take. Its a manual transmition

Hey guys, my name is Liam and I come all the way from Saskatchewan, Canada. I recently bought myself an 04' rx-8, she's all purty and blue. I've always bwen intrigued by engines (mostly cause of fast and furious and need for speed) and now that I have finally got a source of income I wanted to build my own! I'm starting small, I won't touch a thing until I know what it is I am doing and how I am doing it. I only just found the rx-8 club so for the next little while I will be dabbling in and out for suggestions and others success stories. I will admit, I am a complete noob to mechanics but I'm here to learn, so any and all help it appreciated!

Hello I am asking nicely.. If there is anyone that's is an rx8 owner have unlimited vin checks on a website could do me an honest favor.. My dilemma is.. LMAO.. I already bought the car .. That's the good part.. But seeing how I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who sold me the car at a dealership.. I didn't tend to worry about the carfax report.. NOW.. Im very concerned.. Seeing how my VEHICLE wich I have beginner knowledge towards was painted in the front, ... It was a rainy day when I bought the car..





TO THE POINT.. Can anyone willing who has unlimited carfax reports do me a carfax report.. Ill pm you right away...

Through the various guides and helpful responses of many on this forum I've been able figure out what's gone wrong with my 8 and with a dealership warranty on the car I'm getting a new engine in my 8 soon. I'll post up some pictures of that later but, sincerely, thank you all and a great big thank you to those who directly responded to my posts on the new member forum. I'm going to be far more active as soon as the engine comes in and will be working with those of you on the forums to make my 8 one hell of a beast!

Just wanted to say a quick hello to everyone. Recently purchased my RX-8 and am enjoying every time I have to head out. (Okay I think I have been creating reasons to have to drive but won't let my hubby know that)

Idle and warm start issues

I have an 04 manual with 170,000 on the car. It has a remand motor in it now and it has 40,000 on it. Just recently, at idle, my car would die. I changed plugs, wires and coils. Car will start up fine and idle until I drive it. If I come to a stop light or just push the clutch in it will die. Then being that the engine is warmed up, it won't start again until it cools down. It's starts up like it normally does and doesn't have any loss of power when driving until you stop or try to let it idle. I've been told to get the compression checked and that it could be the fuel pump. I need some input as to what to do next. Thanks in advance for any help/ advice. It's greatly needed.
